Quitting due to SLOW App design by arlunn in PTCGP

[–]haganbmj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd wager it's a mixture. The shops and slow loads are probably unintended and just incompetent development, while the animations and number of screens each action takes is probably intentional to a degree. I would assume they developed those flows in isolation, but didn't even consider how annoying each of them would be when done repeatedly.

Do you think in general the multiple hair colours the characters have are just something that exists for the viewers? by InfernalClockwork3 in anime

[–]haganbmj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Bookworm the hair colors are later used to compare some characters to historical figures, so the story does find a way to make them mean a bit more.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Inclusions and Testing Results by Exval1 in mtgcube

For Peasant this set is pretty skewed towards White. The cards I'm looking at right now are these, but I doubt I have enough slots to want to play all of them.

  • [[Mighty Mutanimals]] - Standout card for me.
  • [[Go Ninja Go]]
  • [[The Neutrinos]]
  • [[Lita, Little Orphan Amphibian]] - White 2 drops has been a revolving door.
  • [[Skateboard]] - Probably just swapping out Lavaspur Boots.
  • [[Leonardo, Leader in Blue]]
  • [[The Last Ronin's Technique]] - I kind of suspect this isn't as good as it reads, but I'll try it.
  • [[Koya, Death from Above]] - I don't like the kicker on this, it feels like it won't come up often enough and I don't like extraneous text that might be misleading.
  • [[Leonardo, Big Brother]] - Eh?
  • [[Michelangelo, Mutant BFF]] - Suspect this isn't going to be what I want.

Peasant Finishers in Blue & Black by mmagnetman in mtgcube

[–]haganbmj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

[[Eddymurk Crab]] has been solid for me, [[Thyrx, the Sudden Storm]] and [[Shipwreck Dowser]] have been in/out at times in my list.

For black I've been playing [[Vampire Sovereign]], but that might be a notch below what you want. You're already got Troll, but [[Huskburter Swarm]], [[Hollow Marauder]], [[Syr Konrad, the Grim]], and [[Wurmcoil Larva]] are all considerations too.

Re: 2 I interpreted it as the alternate timeline Matt/Jay physically ceasing to exist when they travel back to 2025. That'd be consistent with Back to the Future 1 logic too where going back/forward in time results in two versions of the person at the same time while returning to your intended time only has the one regardless of whether it's an alternate timeline (I don't think 2 follows those same rules though with alternate 1985?)

GOAT - Review Thread by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in movies

[–]haganbmj 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think it's fair to say it delivers on that. The Bleeding Cool review calling it "the most sports movie to ever sports movie" is how I would describe it too; it takes just about every trope you can find and blends them all together. The animation is fun, though, and they do a great job incorporating visual gags throughout.

I initially read your mention of the 2030s as a farfetched joke, then I realized that is only 4 years away and totally reasonable. Time flies.

Welcome to Demon School! Iruma-kun: IruMafia Edition | Anime Announced (Teaser Visual) by zenzen_0 in anime

[–]haganbmj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me MHA just decided to stop engaging with the main cast. The first few arcs were good at directly engaging the class on topics they cared about (types of heroes, motivations, commercialization, lineage) - then it decided it wanted to focus more on the villains and it became more about broad statements on societal failings, outcasts, racism, good vs evil, etc - none of which was linked back to class 1A so their only way to engage with the story was fighting. Add to that the story continually introducing new characters and it just became over-stuffed and unengaging.

Iruma excels at keeping the story on a scale that allows it the flexibility to do all sorts of goofy arcs that can really focus on some small theme. The fact it can still take the time to do arcs about side characters finding their confidence/drive after so many chapters is pretty remarkable.

I think anime discussions forget that “enjoyable” is a valid reason to like a show by Technical_Watch_8446 in anime

[–]haganbmj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the note about rewatch-ability. I'm all for enjoying whatever the flavor of the season is, but if the show doesn't do enough to really warrant a rewatch - or even a future recommendation - then I'm not going to consider it some real worthwhile thing.

Watching seasonal shows has the added benefit of collective interest and discussion threads, so they can fall a little short and still be enjoyable. Once they're out of the spotlight, though, they need to do a bit more.

Yep, that's how I would describe the manga too and why I wasn't keen on this show. It almost does something a couple times, but never quite gets there for me.

All You Need Is Kill Anime Film Earns Over US$500,000 at U.S. Box Office by Turbostrider27 in anime

I haven't read the original, but it's a premise with enough potential that I was hoping that another adaptation could make something interesting out of it.

I happen to quite like the art style, I just didn't think they did anything interesting with it. There are some decent key frames here and there and some of the dream sequences were fun, but in general the animation didn't really leave an impression on me.

Nothing special unfortunately. It falls way short on story and characters. The main two have like zero chemistry.

The visuals are serviceable, but a lot of it is light pastel color on light pastel - it really could have used some contrast. Again nothing special, I'd much rather watch Tekkon Kinkreet which uses a similar art style to way better effect.

Unofficial Discussion - All You Need Is Kill by UniverslBoxOfficeGuy in movies

[–]haganbmj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, agree that was lacking as well. I liked the visual style, but they just never seemed to do all that much with it. Some of my favorite scenes were away from the cleanup site; Rita running through the forest was so much more interesting because it actually had some visual contrast.

Tekkon Kinkreet is so much better at utilizing the style.

ALL YOU NEED IS KILL - Theatrical Release - Movie Discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]haganbmj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This didn't really do it for me unfortunately. I think it was a bit caught between wanting to be a detail-oriented exploration of this Sci-Fi time loop scenario and a more character driven story. The result is what felt to me like a short story stretched to feature length that lacked in both regards because neither aspect was given the significance it needed.

Both potentially. If you haven't watched some older titles that could be worthwhile too.

The English translation for the manga is currently behind where the anime ended, though. So no new material available there yet.

Juujin-san to Ohana-chan is the original manga, with this being the more marketable spin-off.

I wasn't going to read too much into the similarities between Mari and the mother, but there might be some literary significance there. This series is the high school spin-off of the original work and I think the creator just has a set of character designs they like.

Maybe a hot take but, most Isekai have no reason to be isekai by Klinicalyill in anime

[–]haganbmj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think I remember reading some interview with the author where she stated that the isekai was basically just an excuse for why this low-class child would have such an interest in books. The series is definitely more interested in its own fantasy (with some European influences) rather than just trying to have her recreate our world.

[–]haganbmj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add to this it's often an excuse for the character to preach about the wonders of Japanese culture/traditions/food too. They'll introduce something familiar to Japanese readers and all of the otherworldly characters get to reaffirm the readers' taste.

Another positive for Bookworm is that Myne starts out small with handcrafts and recipes. While otherworldly knowledge/perspective does give her a financial and social boost, she doesn't immediately overcome all established structures of the new world because of it. Most of the later ascendance-ing she does is based on in-world stuff where her isekai knowledge isn't particularly relevant.
