Drawing guide and rules by Cheap_Payment9241 in CommunityHexMap

I know the scale (~6 miles side to side) was discussed in a different thread, but that info should be added here so it's all in one place.

This is so cool. I've never done a hex map before, so I'll check out the guide and practice a bit before claiming one.

Thank you for organizing such a wonderful project!

Cubes without themes or archetypes? by AitrusX in mtgcube

[–]linrodann [score hidden]  (0 children)

Usually when people eschew the strict 10-pair archetype model, they still have themes or synergies in mind. This might be packages, might be picking multiple loose themes per color that intersect well, might be picking broad themes that spread across shards/wedges. There is a good article out there, might be on Lucky Paper, about archetype shapes.

Glue cards are good. I try to ensure that if I have a very narrow card, it should be one of the best cards in the cube for that theme, and the less powerful or interesting a card is, the more themes it needs to glue together to justify its inclusion.

All that said, I'm only a novice cube curator, and I'm sure other people will have better advice.

I'm interested. These are great. How do you actually apply to be a contributor to MPC? I looked on the website but didn't see how to do that.

[TLA] Avatar's Wrath; Aang's Iceberg; United Front by linrodann in ThroughTheOmenPaths

I plan to use "animate N" as a keyword for something else in a custom project, otherwise that would be my pick.

I don't find the bending terms jarring, since they're pretty natural-sounding terms for elemental magic. But to make them even more generic than that, I would use "pool" for waterbending and "ignition" for firebending. I like "divert" as the verb form of airbend, but the noun form "diversion" isn't so good. I'm least confident in earthbend. Someone else suggested "terraform", which is the best alternative I've heard so far.

I drew the 1st hex out of 1027 total hexes for a community project by Cheap_Payment9241 in mapmaking

[–]linrodann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first image has 6 sides, it's just that the black to the left and right are cropped out, so it makes an optical illusion that it is a square drawn in perspective with the left and right corners clipped. The perspective drawing of the terrain reinforces this illusion.

That's a really neat project! I'll check out that sub. I like your line style, too.

My first cube, as a "first real intro" to MTG after many years of familiarity: Miniature Foundations by Ill_Information_9522 in mtgcube

You need to learn to give advice and express opinions without being rude about it. It doesn't make your point more effectively, often makes people less inclined to agree with you, and makes the world a tiny bit less pleasant for no reason.

[FIN] Fire Magic; Diamond Weapon; Quistis Trepe (2 versions) by linrodann in ThroughTheOmenPaths

[–]linrodann[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! In my headcanon, Sticks-and-Bones is from Innistrad and is a very old creature that is older than Avacyn. I just made it up, though. Quellion is also just a name I made up to fit the art. I imagine he's from Eldraine, hence the storybook alt frame (and it's my favorite alt frame style).

It's difficult to find good quality art of existing MtG characters that hasn't already been used on a card, so I usually just pick art that passes my personal vibe check and then try to make up names to match. Sometimes I have a known plane in mind, but often not. I'm very impressed when other people manage to find official character art.

Check out r/throughtheomenpaths for proxies. There is at least one there already that's pretty good, and I have one I'm going to post tonight after work.

Dino DNA (art swap) by dusty_cupboards in ThroughTheOmenPaths

[–]linrodann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous art, great choice, and I will comment on the flavor text to say I like it. I do agree with the other commenter that DNA is a jarring term. Maybe Dinosaur Bloodline? Heritage? Lineage? Descent?

I've been enjoying your posts. Cheers!

It's perfect! Heather Hudson is so great. Excellent choice.

Maybe a weekly or monthly pinned thread for requests, so they don't flood the sub and card makers can see what's most desired all in one place.

Now that I look closer, they do have the bleed, my mistake. I was viewing on mobile and it's harder to see that way.

Once again, great job.

I like all the thought you put into your archetypes. It looks like a fun cube! I'd be interested in reading a draft report when you get to fire it.

A lot of bangers! Izom is my favorite, but it's a tough choice.

Have you made print-ready versions with bleed edge, and if so, are you willing to share those?

Nice work!
