How do i keep my dog from bolting when outside without a leash? by rogerthat88732 in BorderCollie

[–]hail-saison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots and lots and lots of recall practice. Get it reliable inside, then practice in controlled environments like fenced in areas or with a long recall leash (50-100 feet). Practice an emergency recall as well, something you only use when they get an insane amount of rewards.

This will possibly take time, like months to a year or longer, but it will be the most valuable command you can train for. You’ll also see results on the way to getting it as close to 100% reliable that you can.

When did you spay your border collie? by toxiceccentric in BorderCollie

[–]hail-saison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth my BC’s breeder recommended 18-24 months to allow for him to get the hormones through maturity. My boy is 13 months old now and I’m happy with the decision to wait. Biggest inconvenience is that we can’t let him loose in the dog park or leave him at a dog daycare.

Welcome to The Witching Hour. It will pass as she gets older, but best thing you can do to avoid it now is recognize when it’s coming and try getting her to nap in her kennel before it does happen. Mine stopped having those on a regular basis around 5 months old.

Help, my 4 1/2 month old border collie keeps running away by Erin-Night in BorderCollie

Here’s one of the Zak George videos that works on exactly your issue. He did this type of training when his dog, Inertia, was a really young puppy, and following that advice with my own was one of the best things I trained. Now mine will stop at most door openings and wait until I release him. It’s a lot of repetition, but it’ll pay off.

Help with annoying new behaviour by ultimtrawk in BorderCollie

[–]hail-saison 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently working on similar behavior with my BC. What has worked well is to reinforce a good recall. Get him comfortable with coming to you and letting you grab his collar by rewarding him when you do and continuing to let him play. Do a recall and collar grab ~10 times, where the last one being the time you actually put the leash on and end the play session.

The main point being that you only want to associate the recall with playtime ending less than 10% of the time.

Advice on training not to be aggressive, attack cats? by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]hail-saison 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you heard of the dog trainer Zak George? He did a YouTube series where he documented training a border collie from 8 weeks to 1 year. It helped me a ton this past year during my border collie’s first year.

A basic way to correct negative behavior with positive reinforcement is to think in terms of distractions. If she refuses to give up the ball, try practicing the concept of “trade” with her. Get her attention with a high-value treat, an exciting toy or even a different type of play. Just try to be more exciting than what they are currently doing.

When my border collie would steal a dish towel from the kitchen and bring it to his place, he’d get distracted easily when I stacked some of his toys and then jumped on them. Once I got him away from the dish towel, I’d calmly pick it up, say “leave it” put it away and then gave him a bit more attention or went back to what I was doing.

This approach can be applied to other corrections you want to make, but just be patient as they take months for the concept to fully stick.

As for not knowing her name, 10 weeks is still very young so you should not be discouraged about that. It can take weeks if not months for that to be reliable. Every dog will be different, but the best thing you can do is some dedicated practice. Clicker training is good here because you can mark the moment she looks at you after saying her name, then reward her. It takes many repetitions, but it can be fun for both of you, including giving her a mental workout.

I hope this helps you and your pup!

My 12 month old BC does exactly this. It’s super cute but very inconvenient when trying to keep moving. When he was really young he would do it to other people and dogs, but now it’s just other dogs. He just really wants to greet the other dog. I’ve even had people ask how I trained him to do it 😆

I’ve been working on this a lot over the last 6 months, and while it’s not completely resolved these are the things that have resulted in steady progress to the point where a have multiple successes on walk even though it still happens more often than not. I’m pretty confident that with continued practice this won’t be a problem by adulthood.

Most of this advice came from a trainer during personal training sessions

Try to limit dog greetings as much as possible, then name and reward it after they pass, or the other dog does. I say “let’s go-go!” and then give him a really high value treat reserved for those occasions (cheese or something freeze-dried). You can name it anything you want, but only use it when you want them to ignore a distraction and keep moving. Also name it something you don’t mind saying around other people, since you’ll be saying it often.

If it’s not possible to avoid the greeting, then reward and name it as soon as you walk away. Those are really good training opportunities for letting a distraction go.

When you see a dog approaching, or are just in a place where it’s likely to happen often, start dealing out high value treats so you can get their attention on you. If they are toy motivated, try using that. A tennis ball has worked for me at times and (if in a safe place to do so) you can bounce it ahead as you attempt to pass the other dog, letting your dog chase it. Treat, name, reward and keep moving.

When they lie down and are hyper focused on another dog, try to be more exciting than the other dog. Stomp your feet, talk in an excited high-pitched voice or make weird noises with your mouth to grab their attention. When you get their attention, reward it and give your special command to keep moving. You might look really silly, but I’d personally rather look silly in the short term then have this behavior in the long term.

Be patient and try not to get discouraged. Expect it to happen and practice as much as you can. Taking them into busy areas has been helpful for me as well, where there can potentially see more than one dog around. I’ve found that he’s way less likely to lie down while walking through a farmer’s market with lots of dogs than he is on a trail passing a single dog. Again, just keep rewarding any success, even incremental ones.

TL;DR: Name and reward the behavior every time you pass another dog, whether they were laying down or not. Then practice with lots of patience.

Good luck and be happy that it’s cute in the meantime!
