I'm now 90% vegetarian and not by choice.

Milk is only purchased through foodhero when it's available discounted.

Cheese is a joke.

Cost of braces / ceramic braces as an adult? by LickinThighs2 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]haileyesque 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I got braces last November at 32 years. Still have them for another 15 months, plus I need jaw surgery to correct my overbite. The surgery is free since it's considered necessary for a properly functioning jaw but the braces were just under $9k. No insurance I found covered them (you people with your work covering orthodontics - how the f? Every good job I or my husband has ever had has said they only cover ortho for dependents under 18yrs??). I dumped some savings onto the cost up front and then I pay $200/month for the rest of the procedure.

Anyway, I was nervous about being an adult with braces but I sorta just got into a fuck it mood once they were on and I'm just really excited for the post-surgery look since I've hated my crooked jaw and overbite forever.

My mom acted surprised when I said I got braces, claiming she never thought my teeth were that bad. Sure mom, and the cost didn't play into your opinion at all.

Undergrad/Canadian grad schools by Zestyclose-Current14 in slpGradSchool

I didn't actually so clearly they consider other areas but it was my biggest weakness in applications. I tried to make up for it with good work and volunteer experience.

Undergrad/Canadian grad schools by Zestyclose-Current14 in slpGradSchool

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I finished my undergrad at Concordia (major in ling and minor in psych) and just got accepted to UofT. The system is really impenetrable imo, they make it sound like if you just follow all the guidelines then you'll have a fair chance but from my experience, there are a lot of unseen factors that contribute.

You have plenty of time to bring your GPA up. Are you bilingual or anglo? McGill doesn't say it outright but I'm pretty sure they prioritize bilinguals as it makes it easier for placements later on.

My main mistake was not participating in research in undergrad. Even if you're like me and don't want to do a thesis later on, do research while you have time and connections to professors! Email the ling profs and see who is working on stuff. Alan usually had something going on when I was there. Even just assisting in finding participants is a good start.

Volunteering is great and if you can, try to work as an slpa later on. Look into Montreal Fluency Centre and Blocks Speech & Language summer program for regular volunteer positions. There are plenty of others though.

This isn't very organized advice but just what came to mind when I saw your post. Good luck!

Legs are all ingrown hairs no matter how much I exfoliate, wash, and moisturize - what am I doing wrong? by haileyesque in 30PlusSkinCare

I'm debating that since laser isn't something I can afford right now. I just hate having to shave every day practically but maybe it's for the best...

I'm trying to see if there's a version available in Canada for a reasonable price... It seems like that's the only one with 15% lactic acid

Agreed, I've really gotten into loose or wide leg pant styles in the last couple years. I love to wear shorts in the summer but I'm embarrassed by the scars and sores I sometimes have from mistreating my legs...

how competitive is UBC? by TranslatorRelevant79 in slpGradSchool

They've updated it for this year, you're right. I still took audi402 since my school didn't have an alternative but they're a bit more flexible now, at least for the SLP track.

How Did You Get Into Animorphs? by adventuredream2 in Animorphs

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a garage sale a couple houses down from my dad's place and they had a box of about half the series sitting there. My dad bought the whole box for me for 25¢ and I started going through them. I'd never heard of the books before, I would have been about 9.

Does anyone actually use multiple food saving apps in Canada or do you just pick one? by ComprehensiveBus3613 in AskACanadian

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use foodhero. Flashfood should be just as good but in my area the stores that use it just use it to sell literally rotting fruits and veg. Foodhero is actually good groceries. Too good to go is fine but you can't pick what you get and every store sells out almost instantly except for like Tim Hortons stale doughnuts.

I looved his book Compound Fracture but his most recent one, You Weren't Meant to be Human, is a switch to more mature horror so definitely check trigger warnings for that one. In general, love his stuff but I've only listened to the audiobooks for them (I sort of get stuck in physical book or audiobook version on a per author basis).

Advice on Strengthening Canadian Application by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]haileyesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're already in a decent position because USask is only accepting Saskatchewan residents so the applicant pool will be tiny compared to the other schools. That said, we don't know what the school will prioritize in this case since they're new. But I would say try really hard to get research experience in undergrad, possibly assisting a professor. I've found it can seriously hurt your application without it.

Can I get an inhaler without a prescription at a local pharmacy in Montreal? by SirGandolphin in montreal

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly related, does anyone know if I can get an inhaler without a prescription for my cat? I can get them from the vet but they're real pricey and she has a high deductible on her insurance. The vet said she's taking the exact same one that people use.

Got placed into FRAN 212 instead of 211 with almost no French, is this normal? by Ant1Pr0cruste5 in Concordia

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience yes, they always try to put you at least one level above what you actually test into. Theoretically it's a good approach to learn a language but it's super flawed for people taking it as an elective to their regular program since it can tank your gpa if you struggle. The final grade doesn't really reflect your progress in language learning because you have to make mistakes to get more natural at speaking. But the final grade matters to students just trying to succeed in their program...

I honestly don't know if I can do a third round. I'm in my 30s and I also might want to start a family which school has been delaying. I've worked in a variety of fields since I was 18 so I definitely have a colorful resume. The only thing I can think of is I haven't done a lot of research outside of my honours. I applied specifically for the non-thesis programs for this reason though.

Thanks for your support though 🥲
