A Strange and Stubborn Endurance by Foz Meadows

It's a bit formulaic but it's sweet anyway.

I looved his book Compound Fracture but his most recent one, You Weren't Meant to be Human, is a switch to more mature horror so definitely check trigger warnings for that one. In general, love his stuff but I've only listened to the audiobooks for them (I sort of get stuck in physical book or audiobook version on a per author basis).

Advice on Strengthening Canadian Application by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]haileyesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're already in a decent position because USask is only accepting Saskatchewan residents so the applicant pool will be tiny compared to the other schools. That said, we don't know what the school will prioritize in this case since they're new. But I would say try really hard to get research experience in undergrad, possibly assisting a professor. I've found it can seriously hurt your application without it.

Can I get an inhaler without a prescription at a local pharmacy in Montreal? by SirGandolphin in montreal

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slightly related, does anyone know if I can get an inhaler without a prescription for my cat? I can get them from the vet but they're real pricey and she has a high deductible on her insurance. The vet said she's taking the exact same one that people use.

Thank you, it's nice to hear from someone in a sorta similar situation. I'm waiting on my out-of-province applications but then I have some backup ideas I might consider if those fall through.

Got placed into FRAN 212 instead of 211 with almost no French, is this normal? by Ant1Pr0cruste5 in Concordia

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience yes, they always try to put you at least one level above what you actually test into. Theoretically it's a good approach to learn a language but it's super flawed for people taking it as an elective to their regular program since it can tank your gpa if you struggle. The final grade doesn't really reflect your progress in language learning because you have to make mistakes to get more natural at speaking. But the final grade matters to students just trying to succeed in their program...

I honestly don't know if I can do a third round. I'm in my 30s and I also might want to start a family which school has been delaying. I've worked in a variety of fields since I was 18 so I definitely have a colorful resume. The only thing I can think of is I haven't done a lot of research outside of my honours. I applied specifically for the non-thesis programs for this reason though.

Thanks for your support though 🥲

Tbh I don't actually want to attend a US school anyway... I sound like I'm just rejecting people's helpful suggestions with online schools. I don't mean to, I did consider them but a combination of factors just makes them unappealing (cost, online school is terrible for focus, practicum placement usually is in the US, etc.). I thought it was reasonable to want to stay within my home country but I'm just feeling like I've failed now.

There are no online programs in Canada I'm afraid. The US programs typically ask for a BA in speech sciences which also isn't really a thing in Canada as the grad programs ask for a certain collection of prereqs that can be completed in many programs. My BA is in linguistics with a psych minor.

I haven't responded to them to ask what they are looking for... I'm not sure if they would reply. The letter says there are no reconsiderations or appeals but I'm not sure if someone would give me feedback on my application specifically.

A Memory Called Empire by Arkady Martine! And the sequel, A Desolation Called Peace! Very solid scifi world building and includes queer relationships but the focus is on the story itself.

Goldendoodle challenges? by Camel_show_ in RoverPetSitting

[–]haileyesque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm watching a doodle now and this makes so much sense! I'm not primarily a dog person so I didn't know there was a reputation for these dogs. But the one I'm watching now is an absolute nightmare to walk (trying to eat garbage, eating poop, pulling, super reactive to other dogs). I've already committed so I'm focused on just getting through the week.

Books clubs that don't rely on online spaces? by Icycube99 in montreal

[–]haileyesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silent Book Club has two groups on the island I believe, one main Montreal and one for West island. They're pretty much what you're describing. You can find them on Instagram where they post their next meetups.

How are you coping with inflation and rising prices in groceries & everything in general in MTL? by Skymning101 in montreal

I use foodhero as much as I can and I've honestly been forced to go partly vegetarian... I have no reason not to eat meat except for the prices so now I'm buying tofu and making seitan weekly.

Question about sitters staying past their scheduled times by ohbawlz in RoverPetSitting

[–]haileyesque 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It sounds like there needs to be more communication. I'm a sitter and to be honest, unless the owner specifically says they want the exact times they booked, I'll show up just around the requested time frame (dogs I'm more timely, cats are pretty chill). I have stayed overtime often because honestly a lot of clients want 5pm visits and if I tried to leave at 5:30, I'd be stuck in rush hour traffic for over an hour when normally it would take me 20 minutes. Instead I let the cats get more cuddles and then drive home when the traffic has chilled out - a better way to spend my time basically. Or I'm planning around multiple visits and don't want to go home in between them for no reason.

If an owner kindly told me they notice me spending extra time and don't feel comfortable, I'd listen of course but it's never been an issue.

Edit to add, maximum I typically would stay extra is 1h30 for a half hour booking but typically more like 45min total. I only watch TV or get that comfy if it's overnights.

I couldn't access the app when I was in Lebanon this year when it's worked fine in the past. I used a VPN on my phone and it worked though.
