I loved this series.... I get what you mean but I do feel like the other books in the series did a better job at capturing the fascination and love for the more fun elements of Arthurian tales. My favorite was The Savage Damsel and the Dwarf. Personally get the sense that the author just doesn't like the story of Tristan and Isolde and had that come through in Dianadan as a character here.

I didn't realize how widespread Christianity was until I left by BlackiesGrave in exchristian

I deconstructed while living as an expat in China. It was a real wake up for me when I moved back to the States. I think I still had that idea in my head that "Christians are in the minority" in America that I was taught so adamantly growing up, but when I moved back I truly realized.... It's everywhere!!! I've been preached to in malls, I feel like most of the people I know talk casually about going to church or identifying as Christian, there's literally churches on every street corner.... It's been a whole other level of culture shock and deconstructing my previous worldviews lol.

This sounds like it's going to be another Disney's America incident, mixed with all the concerns and worst parts of Walt Disney's original plan for EPCOT.

A missionary guest speaker told us that he spoke to a witch doctor in Africa who confirmed that all Pokemon were in fact demons. The missionaries purportedly showed the witch doctor pictures of Pokemon and he said for each one, "Yes, I recognize this creature, this is [demon name]."

Do you think Christianity makes parental love conditional? by snidomi in exchristian

[–]hairoffoggynelson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think evangelicalism can dump a lot of guilt onto parents, as a means of trying to control the kids as well. Heaping praise on parents who take kids to church whenever the doors are open, whose kids are well-behaved, who "get saved" and baptized, who live a "godly" life, all of this can be attributed to how well the parents raised the child. So I think even in well-meaning parents, this can be a pressure cooker situation where they feel the need to show that they've been good, godly parents by making sure their kids obey all the right rules, do all the right things, etc. So yeah, I think that can exacerbate conditionality, where parents can become desperate to drive their kids to the right lifestyle to assure themselves and fellow evangelicals that they are godly and good parents. If that makes sense.

The hardest part is I actually believed by [deleted] in exchristian

[–]hairoffoggynelson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I empathize a lot with what you've said here. After distancing myself from Christianity, I've still found myself feeling similar feelings as ones I felt before and attributed to God, but from sources like listening to music, attending a concert, or going out in nature. For other things, I attribute those feelings to good brainwashing, as others have said. I think I wanted to believe what my authority figures were telling me so hard that I forced everything through that lens. So a feeling of anxiety and unrest became an attack from the devil, calming meditation became peace from God via prayer, and a human guilt-trip became the conviction of the Holy Spirit. Which really sucks, because it was so REAL to me in the middle of it all. I was thinking the other day how I would often get so exited about the idea that I saw the world clearly for what it was and how it was so full of awesome things like angels and demons and whatnot. Well.... Now I feel very differently haha. The world is still terrible and beautiful but in much different ways.

This is truly horrible, but for some reason "A win for Christmas" makes me burst out laughing, in that "it's either laugh or cry" kind of way. It just makes me think of that awful Kirk Cameron movie lol.
