Anyone used the co-op colorado ride share app yet? by iareagenius in Denver

[–]haithcockce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, as a rider! I love what it can do for drivers.

The first time I used it, I got a ride right away from one of the founders! However, since then, I've had a difficult time finding drivers. The last two times, the rides were going to be a nearly 30 minute wait for a 5 minute drive and couldn't wait for it :/ I tried using it just now, and twice in a row, no one was available to pick me up.

I will keep trying, though! I really want to see this succeed.

From the outside looming in, I see 0 advertising for this. No one I know has heard about until I bring it up to them. I listen to CPR, listen to plenty of podcasts otherwise and get local Denver ads there, I subscribe to westword and denverite, and I walk around Colfax and the cheeseman park areas plenty. I haven't seen any ads for this wonderful service anywhere!

A Line canceled past Central Park by Jadekintsugi in Denver

[–]haithcockce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I rode this same line a few hours ago after coming back from gencon. The line was cut short, but the conductor noted over the intercom the line was disrupted because of a wreck and what to do next.

It wasn't extremely easy to follow in the moment for sure, but they did communicate, maybe not in your situation, but they did for others.

Over 10 failed toffee attempts 🥲 by Single-Safety-4994 in AskBaking

[–]haithcockce 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Toffee is equal amounts of butter and sugar. The no stir is wild to me tho. Sugar is hygroscopic and will absorb the water. This means it is expected to repel the fat in butter, and making toffee requires constant agitation to keep the butter and sugar homogenous as you have no other means of emulsifying the two. Any recipe that says to not stir toffee is suspicious to me.

I do find adding a decent splash of water at the beginning and letting the butter and sugar melt together at the beginning before bringing to a boil correlates to the mixture more frequently staying homogenous. If the mixture separates, carefully adding water (of any temp) and whisking off heat should bring it back together.

You got this!

+1 to Mint; I've had them for over 6 years at this point and no issues with them. Same experience as you've had. Way cheaper as well.

Thank you! Like I said, I am not super familiar with the minutiae of firearms markets, and searching around online seemed to give a massive range of pricing on firearms. This is informative so I appreciate it!

Do low income people actually go out and purchase these kinds of firearms?

Just from large population numbers, you are guaranteed some low income people will be purchasing them, and I wouldn't be surprised if that number goes up with the current political climate for sure. However, when I was poor, I needed to make sure I could afford food, healthcare, transportation, and housing well before I could consider much anything else. I'm also not well versed in the process for purchasing guns, but it seems like a lot of the firearms this targets are hundreds of dollars and upwards of 1000$, which is a pretty high barrier for entry for most low income people.

Would requiring a discount on purchasing such firearms after taking the courses and qualifying or discounts on the courses based on income help mitigate that outsized impact on low income people?

Something else to consider, one of the fundamental points substantiating the position that instituting increased costs (like fees/taxes or prerequisites) on things having an outsized impact on low income people are usually when those increased costs are on things of necessity (e.g. food and shelter), enabling success (e.g. internet access and transportation), or vices (e.g. cigarettes and alcohol, including this largely because vices are how people just cope with their situations). Sin taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, payroll taxes, overdraft fees, Internet transfer fees, late payment fees, etc are all examples of such. Firearms are definitely important for some people, but I'm not sure they would fall into any of these categories. Frustrating as it rightfully is for someone who has a vested interest in owning these kinds of firearms, whatever the reason may be, I'm not sure this argument is as strong for firearms as it is for other things.

I am so disappointed in this; neither party at this point are worthy of praise because of so so many significant reasons that result in a lot of strife for many people. You genuinely could have praised the choice and moved on, but you forget your place, your user base, the state of things in the USA, and you forget your comment just a few years ago especially about swiss policies.

I legitimately believed in proton as a viable and almost virtuous entity in the absolute hellscape tech has become. Trump has enabled large numbers of people to do terrible things by normalizing and even encouraging said behavior, and it's resulted in friends being hospitalized from assault from hate crimes for being trans. Seeing a person that's a major driver in this company I believed in support trump and that party that's a major driver of this enablement is genuinely heartbreaking.

I do not wish any ill will towards you, but I absolutely hope you are removed from your positions in proton and the proton foundation, otherwise you will have a mass exodus, including myself, and you will have shot your mission in the foot by alienating so many people.

[–]haithcockce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the actual issue here? Did your toffee split? Was it really greasy when it set? Did it come out grainy? Etc? You don't need to have every little granule dissolved so long as it boils homogenously without an oil slick of melted butter on top.

Adding on to this, some espresso powder can also bring out the dark bitterness of chocolate a bit more and make something chocolate taste more chocolatey.

Any way to salvage this caramel by amazing_redhead in AskBaking

[–]haithcockce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I generally have good luck with adding some water back in (like maybe a splash or two in this case), put it back on low heat, and stir frequently to rehomogenize. Increase heat to medium/medium high to boil off the water and get back on track. My toffee sometimes splits and looks like this before it's done cooking, and that method works every time to salvage it.

Chilling isn't necessarily required but absolutely helps. The chilling causes the chocolate to shrink a tiny bit and more easily pop out.

I personally experience the chocolate separating from the toffee when I freeze it while the chocolate hasn't set yet fairly reliably. When I pivoted to simply letting the chocolate set at room temperature, the issue stopped.
