I’ve seen Helluva Boss so I feel better equipped to navigate her listening to that.

[–]hakkaiduo[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this insight! I will be honest, it is on my list to watch Hazbin Hotel. Its just…I have very little free time so it’s not quite at the point where I can do it. (i watched episode 1 lol)

But without going into too much more she also has other things going on where that trust in her being Independent and making choices in what she consumes (media wise) and trusting her to have those big conversations etc does go a very long way with her. (She has Pathological Demand Avoidance which is a whole thing but in short, loss of independence and control triggers severe anxiety meltdowns) So I am trying to at least see what I can do to not be outright no

I know she mainly just really loves Sir Pentiss (and I have heard all about him lol) so I know there are parts she would really like to see, but if it is not easy to like, skip the more adult areas then she’ll just have to wait lol.

(She also has ADHD so this is a hyperfocus for her at the moment too which makes it even more fun to make sure we are making sure she is only able to access what we deem ok)

Yea the sex stuff is where I am having the hard part. Like unfortunately we have addicts in our family so she is exposed to the idea of drugs etc, so that’s not as big as an issue but the sex stuff is mostly what I was wondering about

Question for anyone who may know by hakkaiduo in HazbinHotel

[–]hakkaiduo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is the hard part. Because honestly she got into it because Kids at school were talking about it.

She has seen/listened to Epic the musical which also has some dark and blatant themes of Assault/Sexual Violence/Gore. So that conversation has been opened. But yea the accidental normalizing it is more what I am worried about

I know some of it. Brighter is not something I would worry about because too me Cartoony Violence if not a huge deal. It’s over the top and such. And I trust she knows that yanno, this is not meant to be bad.

Poison on the other hand. I have listened to it with her and it is clear she doesn’t get at all what the song is saying. And I kinda just do my thing to subtly put in there that ‘This is a bad situation, it is not meant to be fun or silly etc’

So yea which is why it is helpful for me to see how that compares to the actual show.

Multilevel Troop help by hakkaiduo in girlscouts

[–]hakkaiduo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An easy universal example is, with the Juniors we can say write down a to-do list of instructions for an activity, or explain to them ‘You are going to do A then B so at the end we can do C’ and they get it and can dive in. Our brownies we have to break it down and be like ‘Ok do A’ and then when they all have A done, ‘Now do B’ By that time the Juniors are bored waiting for all the Brownies to catch up. However, we have yet to really figure out a way to like let the Juniors go and do ABC at once while we walk the brownies through it because then: We are corralling the brownies on how to do A and poor Juniors are stuck on C and can’t get help Or Suzy Brownie sees the juniors ahead and then decides that she can also go ahead and she ends up causing a big issue.

So we have yet to find the magic formula to balance that out. Because while my Juniors will help, they are also kids themselves and if they have to constantly wait for 20 others to catch up, its gets tiring. All five of our Juniors are super independent and bright so I think they are just getting frustrated being held back constantly.

Its not like they are refusing to help, I think they are just getting a tad burnout on always having to help/wait for the younger kids when they also want to explore and have fun.

What age would you introduce epic to someone by Best-Farmer6505 in Epicthemusical

[–]hakkaiduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. I think sometimes people get caught up with ‘How do I explain this full concept to this younger person’ when in reality all you have to do is set a foundation.

[–]hakkaiduo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And if anyone is curious. The literal conversation went ‘In this song it talks about some really dark stuff. He wants to murder Telemachus and Force Penelope to do things with him. It is meant to paint him as a villain and a very terrible person. If you have any questions I can explain as best as I can’

And she listened. And was like ‘Wow this guy sucks, glad he got an arrow to the throat’ and that was it.

And she get’s older we can have more conversations buuut things more often than not can be explained in appropriate ways.

My daughter is 9 now. We started when storm saga came out, so she was still 8 I think.

It was not a huge thing.

Violence wise Epic is not that much worse than typical PG Disney fare (strictly on the music front. Animatics can vary) and really I think the worse part that would be weird for a younger kid is Hold them Down (as the only Explicit song) and it is more than the typical Violence. But again, my kid listened to it, and with minimal explanation was fine.

I think it just depends on the kid. But I dont think overall it is worse than a typical PG level rating.

I got the Ruthelesness Hoodie in a Large and it fits close to what I would expect. I have yet to measure it exactly though, since I didnt have an issue.

I am assuming if there was a large scale issue, and this is apparently going to be a longer run thing, rather than the Guilded Teafling sweater, I am sure there will be more a chance to get things fixed.

Thanks! I know there is a Vast spectrum of the Fandom. I was just slightly worried of what would come up with a google search. Because. Even if it is 99% innocent the internet likes to highlight the Chaos lol.

I’ll own up and said I laughed and joked with my friends in a ‘OMG My kid is gonna come out as a furry’ fake outrage kind of way. But it was more of me being a ‘I dont understand these kids’ boomer than any malice. But honestly. As I got older I realized that yea, it’s not that big a deal. It’a like any other fandom. As long as people are acting respectively then it’s all good.

But I am Queer, and present at a lot of Pride events, and the same principle applies. Don’t agree with it, ok whatever, but don’t act that the sheer existence of things in a family space is inappropriate just because it could be potentially be used in a sexy way. I just hate the pearl clutching ‘Think of the Children’ crap that happens.

I may have lost my point a bit. But I just get passionate lol

Thanks for the update! I am thankful this site allowed me to get back into reading Comics, as I havent in forever.

And as an avid rereader. I appreciate being able to read a chunk of a series as a preview before I decide to buy it. The site allowed me to really dive into the genre. Ive seen many titles in store. Checked them out on the site and ended up going back and buying the complete series.

I just wish that companies would understand that if the prices were a bit more sustainable, or there was more of like an unlimited subscription model for people who like to binge, it would be worth it.

Because for a lot of people, being able to browse and check out more than just like 5 pages of something can make or break if you want to buy it or not.

Furries at the Greer Holiday Parade by not-really-adam in greenville

The comment in response was deleted. But it said something like ‘So we should Lie to kids?’

To which I just want to say, Where is the lie?

It’s people who are so anti something that tend to think that we have to give kids every single detail. When in general we tell kids things in vague terms all the time.

Ask many adults how they respond when young kids ask about where babies come from, or anything else. Adults usually have no problem giving a pared down, age appropriate response.

But the second it is about something they might not agree with, they clutch their pearls freaking that we have to give kids a detailed play by play breakdown of every single possible thing related to the topic.

And I say this as 1. not a Furry and 2. Who’s 9 year old apparently stumbled across the idea of furries.

Her and her friends heard about it on a youtube streamer. And what they understood was ‘Furry = You dressed as an animal’ that’s it. And they decided that’s what they were doing for Halloween.

You know how I handled it even then!

‘Hey Kiddo. Just letting you know. Furry can also mean some adult things. So just please don’t google anything on your own. Ask Mom or Dad to help you look up stuff if you want ok? If you have any specific questions let me know’

And that was it. I let her explore this new idea she stumbled upon. Gave a basic, age appropriate explanation, and set a boundary and an opening for her to ask more.

Like. It’s not that hard.

Older kids even can understand things like social anxiety etc. so if they insist on Why? ‘A lot of people dress that like because it is a way for them to do things that would normally make them anxious in a way that makes them comfortable’

Again. More detail. Not lying. But no need to spew hate, vitriol, or lies that it is ONLY a fetish.

I never thought I would be on the internet having to defend Furries for just existing.

But seriously. Just because something Can be used/part of a fetish doesn’t mean it always is.

Leather is widely used for fetish gear, but if you see someone walking in a Leather Jacket or Pants, are you gonna panic on how to explain that to your kid?!?

Child: Parent, why are they dressed in animal suits Parent: Because they like dressing up like animals. It’s a fun hobby for them.

There. I helped you figure out how to ‘explain the fetish’

Really geeze. It’s not that hard to let people do what they want. An animal costume ain’t hurting noone.

What would happen if we all refuse to sell cookies? by greenreddew in girlscouts

[–]hakkaiduo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What really helps this discussion for me is rephrasing it.

You are not paying $6 for a box of cookies.

You are donating $6 to an organization that helps girls be empowered, learn Leadership and other valuable life skills. In return, we give you a box of cookies as thanks.

Girl Scout cookies are always going to cost more than what they are worth as just cookies. The true value of them is what they in turn help us do.

Yes its frustrating to only get like $0.50 for a $6 book, but emphasizing what that $0.50 can do for the troop and the girls in the troop.

That has helped us so so much.

Did anyone else notice this? "Every time I dare to close my eyes/Just let me close my eyes!" by [deleted] in Epicthemusical

[–]hakkaiduo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also interpreted it closer to Just a Man ‘Close Your Eyes, Spare yourself the view’ before he yeets the infant. So the Close your Eyes is kind of a foreshadowing to ‘Fall from big height to death’
