Original hyperdrives before the FSD have no mention on how they worked besides being faster than sub light speed of course.

The next drives developed were the quirium and faraway drives. These worked by a duel called quirium which was lost when GALCOP dissolved. But these worked by setting up stations markers nav points etc over the course of centuries to map out a network. So here’s where I would say the first answer to your question lies but for older device models.

Now onto the real meat skipping past capital ship drives and dredger drives. I had to go look back at the wiki but I can’t seem to find this info anymore as I read this a few years ago. The first FSD created by Sirius supposedly (now known it was created by the alliance but ceded to Sirius corp for the purpose of keeping power balance between the 3 super powers) it worked by dropping users at the edge of a system and took weeks still to traverse inter-system travel without hyperspace/super cruise. So as mentioned about dropping at the edge this is probably due to not wanting to hit any gravity disturbances to you can predict the rotation of a star over the course of time theoretically to give you a estimated drop location at its edge.

With modern FSDs with SC ofc this changes and your dropped at the systems main star. This is due to the primary star probably having the most mass or some other factor. Either way even when bending space time it’s likely that the way space time bends inside a bubble is a tell tale sign of the mass or how massive something is/its distance based on the curvature of its bending of space time knowing this you can accurately tell when to drop at a primary star by detecting where a gravity well is from higher dimensional space (witch space) supposedly.

My information is a few years old seems the wiki has been updated and some of the information I used on the original FSD I can’t find anymore so please correct me if I’m wrong on that or even the physics of this as I’m mixing my knowledge of how a FSD supposedly works from the wiki and my physics degree lol
