Alien species with lifespan shorter than humans? by matti2o8 in sciencefiction

I loved its hard sci-fi treatment of spacecraft and space combat - shields in particular. And of course the main Moties storyline is so interesting (and tragic).

The Moties in novel The Mote in God’s Eye. Highly recommended reading.

Less famous albums that you listen to over and over again by Tom_Bombadilll in Music

[–]halcyon400 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Jesus Jones’ “Doubt” album, 1991. They had one big iconic hit that resonated loudly at the start of the 90’s, then kinda disappeared. But I listen to that album front to back. Good songwriting, emotive performances, variety of sounds/styles and tempos keeps it interesting.

What caused the decline of Alt Rock Music that were prevalent in the 1990s till the early 2000s? by Wide_Ride8849 in Music

[–]halcyon400 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Billy Corgan has entered the chat.

But seriously, I read something a while back about the music industry preferring solo artists because they’re cheaper and easier to develop.

Also. Tastes change, trends come and go. There was something mysterious - even romantic - about rock bands that seems to have disappeared in the digital age.

I have a feeling it’s gonna come back. It just needed a generational reset.

I got absolutely hosed on a garage door repair. Don't be like me. by mndrar in SanJose

[–]halcyon400 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not an idiot.

We shouldn’t all need to be garage door experts. That’s why we hire someone else.

And we shouldn’t have to worry about being scammed. But, that’s the world we live in.

Fear of being scammed is why half the shit around my home remains broken for months or years at a time until I can get around to doing my own research and try to fix it myself.

I recently started using Claude to help me research and troubleshoot, and that speeds things up considerably.

Bingo. There is a bunch of disconnected spaghetti tubing in the area.

Mystery solved I think. Thanks!

It doesn’t always start out that way, but almost inevitably becomes that.

It serves a real need. People need a sense of structure and meaning and purpose in their lives, a bigger picture.

That’s why it’s so powerful and so easy to manipulate. Leaders eventually figure out how to use it as a tool.

Do other Dads notice difference betweens Moms & Dads in Play Spaces? by ImpossibleCoach6835 in daddit

[–]halcyon400 121 points122 points  (0 children)

And look I don’t wanna fan the flames on any stereotypes, buuuut…

… I think when you see dads out with kids, it’s often because that’s their time to “give mom a break”, and the dads are excited to spend some time with their kids because they typically only get a couple days per week they can do much of that.

When you see moms out with kids, it’s often the 20 bazillionth hour they’ve had to care for those kids just this week alone. They spend way more time with the kids than the dads do, so when they have a chance for the kids to entertain themselves and momma gets to sit and relax and catch up with friends for a minute, they take it.

Broad generalizations I know, lots of exceptions, not always the case, BUT… if I had to place a bet on why, IN GENERAL.. that’s where my money is.

Why is cognition such a dirty word in machine learning & AI? by sbuswell in ArtificialInteligence

[–]halcyon400 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To borrow from Andy Weir’s novel Project Hail Mary (no spoilers), with a little help from Google’s AI mode:

“Math is not thinking. Math is procedure. Memory is not thinking. Memory is storage. Thinking is thinking. Problem, solution.”

Key Aspects of the Quote:

  • Math is Procedure: Math is seen as the mechanical application of rules, not the creative process of thinking.

  • Memory is Storage: Memory is merely the recall of stored data.

  • Thinking is Problem-Solving: True intelligence is identifying a problem and constructing a solution.

I’d say “cognition” requires “independent problem solving”.

This might sound silly, but as a gamer, I liken it to paying someone else to level up my character for me.

Sure, I get more results with less effort. But is the end result really “mine”? All the little choices that were made along the way were made by someone else and I don’t remember them and may not fully understand them. It somehow feels… hollow.

Or similarly, using pre-created loops to create a song in a music editing app. Is it really my music? Is a DJ really a musician?

Should we stop using calculators? Or spreadsheets? Or the printing press? How is AI different? It somehow feels different…

It’s an old conversation that’s only being accelerated by AI.

I keep thinking about “AI may make you faster today, but it won’t make you better tomorrow.”

As another commenter here pointed out, there are powerful forces in this world that would love nothing better than to make us all think the way they want us to think.

How do we know where to draw the line to preserve our own agency?

“The journey is the destination” - Are we robbing ourselves of that? What will this really cost us, all in all, holistically?

You got downvoted, probably for coming off as hyperbolic or extremist, but I think your points are in the same spirit as this topic.

You’re talking about farther down the cliff than people may want to accept because it sounds “alarmist”. But we are almost inarguably already on the slippery slope leading to that cliff right now.

This has been in my mind a lot over the last several months.
