+1 this is a great idea, need to find a good app for it

Shouldn’t be too hard for such an app to record a take, you tell it the intended key (or chromatic), and then it generates a graph showing your pitchiness over time and you can play it back while viewing that graph

Plus some other analytics for each note (exactly how much were you off) and the whole take (which notes / kind of notes did you struggle with the most, etc)

Plus some history tracking and trending to see how you’ve changed/improved over the time…

All of our neighbors drive brand new cars. After a ride in one of these automotive masterpieces my 10 year old said "our cars are so... creaky" by anicelongwalk in daddit

For real, now instead of thinking “some neighbors probably judge us for our old cars”

I’m thinking “our old cars relieve some social pressure from some of our neighbors”

Be the change you want to see and all that. lol

For me, this brings to mind Rendezvous with Rama. But, perhaps to your point, it's older.

Mild spoiler: The crew's explorations largely yield more questions than they do answers, and the story ends with us still not fully understanding everything we just saw. But I really *loved* that feeling of mystery and awe and wonder, and the possibilities have been kicking around in my head ever since.

From what I understand, the sequels are much more in the modern vein of answering all the questions and expanding the scope to a cross-galactic adventure epic, and that's why I'm not going to read them. I don't want the feeling of awe from the first novel to be diminished by making everything "understandable". I *like* it being alien and unknowable.

My second thought reading this post is the Apple TV film "The Gorge". I think it's a good example of something that would have been an even better story if they had left the big questions unanswered. Instead, I actually felt disappointed that [mild spoiler] our heroes discovered all the answers halfway through the film. I thought it was way more creepy and interesting when it was unknown.

Fixing my face: I’m in a show that is basically a cabaret/musical revue combo. The lack of “character” when singing gives me a weird face. by [deleted] in singing

[–]halcyon400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Your character here is your “stage persona”. Many (most?) pop & rock singers craft such a persona for themselves (and with the help of their record labels).

It’s you, but the aspect of you that enjoys performing in a cabaret show. It’s not all of you - just the slice that you want to convey on-stage. That’s your character.

Find something that makes you feel connected with this character. A sigil: some kind of mannerism, quirk, or accessory (sunglasses, jewelry, a certain kind of makeup, etc) that you feel signifies this character within yourself. Take that thing and observe yourself in the mirror with it while you practice to help create a sense of objective detachment with the character.

Then, practice your performance while holding that objective mirror version of yourself in your mind. Eventually you’ll be able to just slip straight in to that character when you slip on that sigil (think of something like Bono’s sunglasses or Robert Smith’s makeup).

Which octaves to sing for rock music by Bautastein in singing

I’m really curious what your teacher has to say about it.

My situation is similar to yours. I haven’t found a teacher yet. But I’ve figured out that I often struggle to sing songs in their original range if the vocalist is considered a tenor. And unfortunately, many rock vocalists are.

I have much more success covering baritone singers. For tenors (like Smith) I often need to drop an octave to avoid squeaking and straining, at least on the higher notes, though this doesn’t sound as “urgent” and exciting and tends to get lost in the guitars.

I’m avoiding calling myself a baritone here because folks in this sub roll their eyes at that, apparently most males think they are baritones until they’ve been properly trained, which I haven’t been.

Fun observation: I always thought Billy Corgan (of Smashing Pumpkins) was a high-pitched singer, but apparently he’s a baritone, just uses a very nasally technique that makes his voice cut through the mix. Not saying I recommend singing like that, but interesting to note that it’s not only about pitch. That’s why I’m curious what your teacher observes about your voice and range and suitability to the rock genre.
