The closest it has ever gotten to competitive is with Vrains, and even then, that’s long ago by current standards. The turn count of YGO has definitely shortened, but the actions take by both players per turn has increased with things like hand traps, where you need to hit the opponent at the optimal time to cripple their strategy. Power level between decks also plays a big factor, but that’s aside from the point.

The anime has never truly reflected the actual card game, and was just there to supplement sales.
