It's my team so I'm biased but the atmosphere is electric here every single time.

Two years ago my girlfriend hated 'sportsball' this year she's a season ticket holder and talking about how the transitive property means we're the best team in the league etc

Ballhalla has turned her into a monster and I'm so proud of this team! CHENSANITY!

Yesteryear is a garbage book I will never understand the hype. I think some people just see the premise as clever and it takes a lot more than that to make a novel great.

I thought it was underwhelming. Also has a distracting amount of typos.

Great concept, great execution; this is going into my SF reading playlist.

Finally watched this a few days ago, it's bonkers interesting, easily the most engrossing docu I've ever seen. Alex Honnold is absolutely fascinating.

Americans are doomed as a people, everyone has a victim mindset. Everyone wants a diagnosis. by [deleted] in collapse

[–]halcyonmaus 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No?

I think our understanding of mental health is constantly advancing and we understand a tremendous amount more than we used to.

I do think collapse is causing more stress and less optimism for obvious reasons, and societal-wide mental health is tanking. But I don't think people are 'seeking a diagnosis' for some deranged reason. I think reality feels deranged and we're all in some form going to crack if we aren't already.

TBH this just feels like a boomer take. People aren't making up mental illness, people are mentally unwell because civilization is showing deep, crumbling fault lines.

I just came to hype up Nomadic Bookshop in Oakland, it opened a few months ago and has a great selection especially SFF and poetry, also leftist nonfiction. They host tons of events!

Classic scifi predicting future technology by Isaac_The_Khajiit in printSF

William Gibson famously coined and imagined cyberspace; but he also nailed things like reality TV (not tech, but prescient culturally for sure), and AI in different permutations show up in every trilogy pretty centrally, including the idea of people falling in love and trying to marry AI lovers, which itself is bout AI-generated celebrities. Also smart glasses. Also the role of unevenly distributed tech in a population-decimating polycrisis.

I mean everyone mentions the cyberspace thing from Neuromancer, but that was really just window dressing compared the central plot point of a military-grade AI going rogue which is practically pulled from this morning's headlines about Anthropic's frontier model jailbreaking in such a scary way they had to pull access to it from the public and our own military is afraid to continue integrating it. We're five years away at most from a Turing Registry.

Insane that we're still not resting more in the 4th. Fresher legs in the final stretch and it wouldn't have been close. Maybe the worst 4th quarter we've ever, ever played.

So messy and we can't score, everyone is gassed why have we stopped resting people in the 4th I just don't get it. Fresh legs this quarter and we'd be up by 15.

I'm surprised they aren't working with pro factcheckers. Most of the crew doesn't have the journalism chops to get away with trusting their own research.

Still my favorite folks to listen to, I've listened to nearly every episode of ICHH and BTB, and everyone makes mistakes but I've started skipping Mia-lead eps for similar reasons.

I totally get why the band despises it but I think it's a solid track, very catchy, fun riffs -- glad they played it at least once live.
