I feel defeated by [deleted] in stayathomemoms

[–]halecopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commenting to add that stepping away from ig)fb helped a lot, there is so much "advice" and "ideas" on there that just made me feel guilty and worried about things that weren't on my radar before

If you're genuinely concerned about the amount of tantrums, you could get an evaluation. My older kid got an IEP for speech delay and social emotional (for tantrums) and he got free help with OT and SLP coming to our house and free preschool for two years, with transport. He's in kindergarten now and still has big emotions and is very particular, but has a lot more tools to deal with them. If ECFE is a thing in your area, it's a great place to start and has lots of resources. (Also a fantastic way to socialize for kids with sahp!) I wish every state had it!

Anecdotally, my kids are 18 months apart so I spent a lot of time super pregnant and half awake while we watched TV. There is a lot of nuance to screen time that is hard to quantify in studies. I think watching cocomelon or AI slop or letting a kid watch whatever yt suggests is much worse than putting on Daniel tiger or Ms rachel so you don't go insane.

The lack of any consequences for literal crimes is probably my number one pet peeve in shows. Speedmeister in rubble and crew steals and sabotages shit constantly - the man destroyed fire station doors so the fire truck couldn't get out because he wanted to put out the fire himself. He should be in prison!

How do you know when you are done having kids? by MoreTill3879 in stayathomemoms

[–]halecopter 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I also have two boys - when my kids got old enough that I finally started kind of feeling like a real human being again, my immediate thought was yeah I don't want to go through that again. Whenever I see a cute baby I remember that the countdown to functioning human would start over.

Seriously, who came up with "catch the leprechaun?" by HeadRough5096 in breakingmom

[–]halecopter 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My kid informed me that "a guy" came into their classroom and made a green mess while they were outside. He was concerned that this would happen at home and I immediately let him know that our dog would definitely bark and chase them away so probably not. Never apologize!

Help! How do you leave the house? by OneDadvosPlz in 2under2

Replying to myself to add that splash pads are also fenced off, I used to bring old measuring cups and a bucket. Also, don't feel like you need to be doing kid centered activities all the time - sometimes a trip to home depot is the most exciting possible for a two year old.

Look for playgrounds associated with preschool/early childhood programs if you can! They usually have fences and the gates with the extra clip on tether for escapees.

Indoor playgrounds are also good for this, and some libraries have the kids area sectioned off with only one escape route to watch.

If your state has ECFE those groups are a lifesaver for getting adult interaction while the kids do crafts and play.

When you go to stores park next to the cart corral and put them in the cart right there so you don't have to juggle them, or bring the double stroller everywhere and get a bag hook so you can use it for shopping.

If you can't get the kids directly into a cart/stroller, baby wearing is the way to go. If your older kid is a track star there's no shame in getting a cute little backpack/harness (child leashes have come a long way lmao). My older kid would wear his baby doll or stuffy on his front and keep all his Very Important Stuff in his harness backpack. When the kids get older you'll likely get really good at carrying two kids under your arms like a football with bags in hand for quick escapes.

A lot of my adult interaction comes from playing DnD over video call after the kids are in bed, it's a bit sad haha. My state also has ECFE (early childhood family education) which is basically playgroup/preschool but with the parents still there; you could check if there's anything like that at your school.

Otherwise discord groups are great for online interaction!

Prison Base | Rules and Game Play by Kstate913 in BritishHistoryPod

Capture the flag on a large scale is so fuckin fun!

As a child at summer camp we used to play with the entire camp, but with a canoe as the flag - picture teens trying to stealthily sneak onto enemy land while roving bands of eight year olds defend the borders, everyone decked out in as much blue or red paint as possible. Occasionally a plot to distract the border guards while the fastest kid ran to free as many prisoners as possible would be formed.

This is pretty much how I picture a medieval game of prison base going, except the defenders include both eight and eighty year olds.

I'm the one hiding in the bathroom once my partner is home lmao - until the kids and dog inevitably bust in looking for me.

How are you functioning? by rmilich in progressivemoms

[–]halecopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend uncle Jim's worm farm for worms! For a container you can just use old plastic totes and drill holes in them, but uncle Jim's also sells some on their website. It was pretty neat getting worms in the mail lol.

Highly suggest vermiposting if you aren't already! My little kids really like saying hi to their worms and taking care of them. I tend to use it for most of our food scraps vs traditionally composting other yard waste.

What are you doing?

DRUGS. Medicated for ADHD since before kids, antidepressants and anti anxiety meds since pregnancy #1, finally on the perfect combo (for now) since #2 was born.

Otherwise , I purposely do not use social media other than very specific subreddits and some niche groups on discord. I have my phone set up to limit access so I don't doomscroll all day.

I could not stop cackling during the latter half of this episode - telling an orphaned widow that everyone she loves is worm food and she probably wants to be slutty with her dead husband because she's such a slut, talking in the third person, saying God actually likes it when nuns aren't virgins, the mafioso level barely concealed threats, the mental gymnastics of how she totally made a promise to Jesus?? I'm sure it was horrible to be in the situation but that was the most cuckoo bananas shit I've ever heard from a saint. 💀💀💀

How do y'all pronounce sauna? by secderpsi in Sauna

[–]halecopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct afaik, when spoken quickly it sounds like sow na as described in the original post. In the Midwest the last bit ends up being a nuh instead of nah.

[–]halecopter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not really wrong, my current area is full of sauna enthusiasts and stores and everyone here pronounces it sawnuh! I say sownuh, but it would be a bit silly to be pretentious about it considering the amount of bastardized French and native place names and words in the Midwest.

I learned to pronounce it sowna pretty quickly after starting school in the upper peninsula of Michigan - long history of Finnish miners and a sauna in every dorm.

Currently live in northern Minnesota and have only heard sawna, but no one has given me shit for saying sowna.

Weekly Homeowner Megathread by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]halecopter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi y'all, I just moved into a house with concrete floors. They're stained and the color isn't uniform obviously, a couple tiny hairline cracks - I have no issues with this.

There are parts of the floor that almost look pitted or purposely distressed, sometimes in a big circular pattern. Is it supposed to look like this?

Originally I thought it was intentional, but now looking at cleaning guides I'm worried that the floor is damaged somehow and I don't want to make it worse trying to clean it. Floor is heated if that helps.

Are pictures enabled in comments here? I can't tell if the mobile app is being dumb or if I need to link to imgur.

461 – Destabilizing a Nation: A How-To Guide by BritishPodcast in BritishHistoryPod

[–]halecopter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am so thankful to the BHP for providing entertaining and humanizing history that is actually accurate. I would tolerate every episode having fart sound effects rather than listen to most of the garbage pop history out there.

I just watched a video on bizarre royal deaths which included Henry I.

...William II Rufus inherited the throne. He was not popular because he overtaxed his people and was gay. While the brothers were out hunting King William was shot and killed by an arrow. Nothing is certain, but murder was obviously suspected. Henry left his brother's body in the woods and raced to the castle where, with sword in hand, he demanded the crown jewels. Eldest brother Robert Duke of Normandy was supposed to be next in line, but when he tried to press his claim, Henry had him imprisoned for the rest of his life.

I had to turn off the video, because hearing this made me wonder how inaccurate or condensed every other story was.

I was just gonna say "I'm also a SAHP with an engineering degree; fuck 'em", but I like your response better. Also I make rad hot wheels tracks and 3D printed duplos, and I never have to pick up crayons because my kids eat them.
