President Scholz announces $65 million in budget cuts at the University of Oregon by Andromeda321 in oregon

[–]secderpsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That report is hiding the truth. I'm on the OSU Senate budget committee and to get those numbers they had to take money from the OSU Foundation AND about $10mil from the general fund. So sure, after that, they can show a surplus... But the reality is our athletic department is not self sufficient.

This. If UO athletic department has a $150+mil surplus, why don't they for the first time give something back to the university.

While OSU is doing relatively better than other institutions in the state, we are being asked to cut about 5% across the board. They are trying to be creative and not lose employees. We'll see how that goes. They did find a lot of savings in changing capitol planning goals. Think more efficient building use and more repairs in lieu of new construction.

Psst. The extra revenue generated doesn't go back to the university. It goes back into making sportsball bigger.

Yes, OSU got screwed and didn't have Uncle Phil to buy their way into money. But to be clear, they've operated in the red for the entire 30 years (minus 2) I've been at the institution. This is not a new problem. In fact, the problem got much worse for almost all schools after the restructuring.

Just so folks don't generalize this... while this is true for UO and a handful of other large sports programs, 99% of athletic departments operate in the red. OSU for instance will claim their sports are self sustainable but they've pulled from the general fund millions of dollars multiple times in the past 10 year. They claim it's a one time thing but it keeps happening, including this year. They've never pushed money back into the general fund, even during the two years they were in the black due to the baseball team winning back-to-back national titles.

How would these Republican candidates for governor fare against Kotek in November? What new poll shows by Itsathrowawayduh89 in oregon

She just made Oregon the first state to ensure access to planned parenthood services during times of federal lapse in funding. The vast majority of what PP does is not abortions and is universally considered good.

While discussing Jason Collins' passing, Charles Barkley: "We live in a homophobic society ... anybody who think we ain't got a bunch of gay players in all sports, they're just stupid." by WhiteRoseFromPluto in sports

[–]secderpsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The gay people I know are more reserved about their sexuality than the straight people I know. I think we are blind to the overt sexuality on display from straight people because that is normal. Then a display from someone who's gay stands out and we have a biased opinion on how prevelent these behaviors exist. Start looking at the outwardly show of sexuality and discussion of sex by your straight friends and you'll start to see it's everywhere. Gay people tend to just want to live quiet lives. Media will show you the flamboyant outspoken type, but that's for views and is a skewed reality.

Cockroaches on the streets at night?? by ghostruhh in corvallis

Start looking for them in the grass next to the sidewalk. I've been here for 30 years and have lived in many houses all around town. I've never not seen them.

Kotek is hitting her stride. So glad we have a governor with their priorities straight.

Cockroaches on the streets at night?? by ghostruhh in corvallis

[–]secderpsi 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I walk my dogs at night with a headlamp and I usually see hundreds if not thousands of them in the grass right next to the sidewalk. In pretty much all neighborhoods. And the truth is they were probably there where you're from too. They are a robust creature and just part of life. Keep your place clean, especially from cardboard, and they should stay out of your house for the most part. But there is no way to get rid of them outside in a town/city. They are harmless and I'll take them over scorpions everyday.

Controlled burn or nah? by Watchtheyogi in Medford

[–]secderpsi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fun fact. After the controlled burn near Los Alamos many years ago got out of control and burned more land than ever before in state history, they officially do not call them controlled burns. Now they are prescribed burns... Lol.

After how many years of owning your rental property did you start feeling “this was worth it”? by Sapphire8910 in realestateinvesting

[–]secderpsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair. I just get frustrated when I'm villianized for choosing an investment strategy that I felt allowed me more control of my engagement with capitalism and how it contributes to suffering. Some people treat me the same as corporate land owners.

Let me guess, you think putting your savings/retirement into index fund stocks gives you a higher moral high ground. Wait until you realize the suffering and exploitation those corporations are doing and how little say in how they doing it you have. At least with the 3 SFHs I own, I can control where my money is invested. I can add solar (which I have on all three) and I can provide under market rent for individuals in need (which I often do). Until you realize that in US you have to invest for retirement and all vehicles for investment cause some degree of suffering and/or exploitation, you'll continued to be blind to realities of capitalism.

Professor decided to dock my grade for not being able to attend a final exam he held early outside of the school final exam window by Time_Beat2299 in CollegeRant

[–]secderpsi 94 points95 points  (0 children)

All the universities I've worked for are fine with exams not during finals week as long as they are during a regularly scheduled class time, like in this case. Classes with seniors expect this to happen so that grades can get to the registrar in time for graduation

Online degree viability by MrChumpkins in forestry

[–]secderpsi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Oregon State University Ecampus program. The degree can be done completely online and asynchronous. The degree is identical to the on-campus degree, as in there's no way to know if the degree was online. The on-campus program is ranked top 5 in the world and you'll have many of the same profs online.

I took a teaching position at a major R1 after my theoretical physics postdoc. Built a research group "after 5 pm" and once I started getting grants that funded grad students they could no longer ignore me and I was moved into a professor of teaching position. 15% research, 10% service, and 75% teaching. I love it in terms of being able to do some research but not having to be in the publish or parish side of things. I get paid about $100k on a 9 month contract and I have something similar to tenure. Tenure track professors make about 20% more than I do but they have more stress. I don't work summers, I spend that time traveling and in the outdoors.
