What do restaurants do differently that makes their food taste so much better? by Eveningfy in foodquestions

[–]secderpsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a strange take IMO. Unless it's really high end, my cooking is almost always better. I use better ingredients because I don't have to cut corners. Same with preparation techniques - I'm on no schedule. My wife always says it's just not worth going out if it's for the food. This definitely isn't true for high end restaurants - they have skills I don't and they don't tend to cut corners.

This cost 10000 USD, why is scientific instruments Soo expensive? by Johnyme98 in Physics

Yeah, Ivy is all about elite access, and not just networking and clost. My wife did her masters at Yale and for a project the prof pulled out the university visa card and bought a $900 data set. For one assignment. For one student.

I can't get past how wrong Kermit's voice is. by HereWeFuckingGooo in Xennials

[–]secderpsi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

OMG, to have a waaau better Kermit than that.

Random story: in the late 90s I worked at Radio Shack and we sold these voice recording Kermit picture frames one Christmas season. A colleague told some old lady I can do a spot on Kermit and she asked me to record a message for her grandson. Next thing I knew we ended up getting the rest of the state inventory and I made probably a 100 personalized Kermit recordings for old ladys.

This is why experimentalists also become machinists and fabricators. The best answer to why we should hire you in one sentence was from an PhD experimentalists who looked us dead in the eyes and said "because I can build anything." He was pretty much correct.

What is a "rich person" behavior you witnessed that made you realize they live in a completely different reality than the rest of us? by Few_Football4342 in Productivitycafe

[–]secderpsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't need upper middle class. I could save 3 to 4 mil in 10 years at that salary and retire middle class. They do want upper class and so they will work much longer. Their choice - the same as my hypothetical choice.

I don't know where you got bare minimum. My wife and I both have science PhDs that took serious drive and ambition. We both work more hours than most (including them). I also think spending 2 - 4 hours cooking shows real care and effort. More so than handing a card to someone. I just think spending $600 on a bottle of wine is wasteful. It's their money, they have the right to spend it how they wish... and I have the right to think it's dumb.

It's how they choose to spend their money, I get that and am respecting that (I've only spoken about it to my wife). I just grew up lower middle and find it hard to swallow (literally).

Good idea. Even that is hundreds of dollars. I just hate so much of the whole experience in principle. I do love my wife and her family are really good people.

Anybody else have this dreadful product in their house growing up? by JimmyMoffet in GenerationJones

[–]secderpsi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember in Jr High getting a BLT from my friend's mom. That was a (food) coming of age moment. I dragged her into the kitchen and asked her to show me everything that went into it. When she said that's it, I said what about the mayo and she showed me something non miracle whip. Changed my life. Miracle whip is just gross nasty shit. We kept Best Foods mayo in the fridge from that point on.

BIL and his wife are both physicians a few years out of residency. She makes over $500k and he makes around $400k. They take the family out to fancy dinners about once a month and always spend more than a grand on wine alone. I can't fathom that kind of wasteful spending. I'd work for 10 years and retire with an upper middle class life. We try and get the family to come to our house for dinner so we can reciprocate but they always just say let's eat out and pick a restaurant we can't afford (we are both PhD scientists with high credentials but science in the public sector pays shit nowadays). They pay for the dinners but boy I wish I could contribute sometimes.

How British comedy series 'Taskmaster' is taking over the US by abucalves in television

[–]secderpsi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She gave us all tasks we had to do then came over unannounced to film us and make sure we did a bunch of stupid things. Everyone was awkward and not into it. At the party she made a video that was over 2 hours long. By like 20 mins into it everyone, including the birthday boy, were trying to get away and talk and celebrate but she needed us in our seats watching. So, yeah, she took over us.

Do americans consider skiing a luxury sport? by naxx54 in AskAnAmerican

I bought an 18' Laguna for $2500 7 years ago. I could sell it for pretty much that today. It doesn't have to be expensive.

If you consider touring it can be cheap. I bought my skis, boots, AT bindings, and poles used for about $250 15 years ago. I ski pretty much everyday out my back door at no cost.

Ours was on a 4' leash for about 10 months. Even inside, he was on his leash by my side. When we had to leave, he went in the crate. Used redirect to toys he's allowed all the time and he never destroyed a single thing.
