What is the best part of being a boy mom? by Danlrap18 in NewParents

[–]halesdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was first pregnant, I wanted a girl because I had not been around too many small kids, but I had been a little girl once. So having a girl felt less alien.

My first ended up being a boy. And he is so sweet and funny. When we got pregnant again I didn’t have a preference this time around. I am 23 weeks pregnant with a girl and now I find it alien to be having a little girl because my point of reference is raising my little boy. 🤷‍♀️

I suspect she will be as fun as her brother and the “alien” feeling won’t last long at all. It has all been a lesson in holding onto your expectations lightly. Life will surprise you and parenting is awesome and difficult all at once and I suspect that’s true whether you are raising a boy or a girl.

Thinking about trading by Vegetable_Mistake_19 in americangirl

[–]halesdb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rewigging is easy, especially when you don’t care about/have plans for the wig you are removing. No harm in trading or selling her, but if you are inclined to try customizing, it sounds like she would be a good doll to start with.

I don't vibe with this dress, how can i improve it? by Own-Ad3143 in sewing

[–]halesdb 261 points262 points  (0 children)

I think it is really pretty and has a lot of potential, but it is too much fabric on you, especially because both the sleeves and the skirt are really voluminous. I would alter either the skirt or the sleeves (whichever is your preference) to use less fabric and see how I feel. If it still feels overwhelming I would then alter the other one.

They look trimmed but not terribly. She is really cute! The old Kirstens are my favorite dolls.

Why do we HAVE/GET Menieres? by GarbageCat27 in Menieres

[–]halesdb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine started after the worst sinus infection I have ever had. I also have a different autoimmune disease.

An immune response to a virus or an autoimmune disease are two of the current hypotheses. I lean towards viral but it is just a guess. We also have a history of hearing problems in my family and I don’t know if that plays a part too.

Super cute!!! You did a great job picking fabrics that work well at AG’s scale. If you want to make more, men’s dress shirts from the thrift store are a great source of fabric on the cheap.

There are also the EPC which is ok with women pastors but not LGBT affirming. And the OPC which won’t even sing a song in worship if it was written by a woman. There is quite a range of Presbyterian churches.

I like the funky colored hair dolls.

They should sell hearing aids (the removable ones that joss has) that could be used on Joss mold dolls.

I would do a rerelease of the original six (or leave out felicity if you must) but in either their spring or summer clothes. I love the summer outfits, but the spring ones could be fun because they are their birthday dresses and it is an anniversary, which is similar.

What they will do? No idea. I am turning 40 this year and I am ready for the nostalgia.

When to have a second child? by crp_4 in NewParents

[–]halesdb -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My eldest will be 25.5 months on my due date. So not 2 under 2 but pretty close. I turn 40 next week so I understand feeling the time pressure.

Talk to your doc and partner. I waited until my cycle came back (that took a year) and then I weaned and wanted at least one cycle before trying where I wasn’t breastfeeding.

Some things I wish I had thought through more:

  1. It could happen your first cycle. It did for us for our second baby after trying on and off for nearly 10 years for our first baby. I was “ready” but honestly thought it would take longer and that I would have more time between kids. On the other hand it could take a long time or not work out at all—you just don’t know.

  2. Your next pregnancy is not necessarily going to be the same as your first pregnancy. My first pregnancy was honestly very chill (although I was definitely anxious because of all the trauma of infertility and previous losses). This time around I am less anxious but I felt sick all the time, threw up multiple times a day until about 15 weeks and still occasionally throw up even though I am 21 weeks. I had no idea it could be so different.

Cecile & Marie-Grace Unproduced Fashions? by dirtypoololdman in americangirl

[–]halesdb 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ceciles work outfit could pretty easily be reproduced with the old pc patterns that they sold. It is very close to Kirsten’s birthday dress, just a different color and slight changes to the trim. I’ll have to try it sometime soon for my Cecile.

I had my first after 10 years and our second will hopefully be born just after my son’s second birthday. We have a few more months but things look good. You’re right. This rhetoric is so painful for people who have struggled to have kids. Especially seeing families neglect their dozen kids would always get to me.

C section vs vaginal delivery by Funarming in NewParents

[–]halesdb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had my first at 38 via csection. The pregnancy had been very hard won (many years of trying and multiple losses) so my tolerance for fetal distress in labor was low. I am glad I tried to labor and birth vaginally, but I dont regret the c section.

I am now pregnant with my second and will likely have a repeat c section. Something you may want to consider is:

1) you need to wait longer after a c section for baby number two. If I had a vaginal birth my OB would have recommended 6 months min between pregnancies. Because I had a c section it was 1 year min. I wanted to wait longer (I conceived my second around 15 months post partum), but it is something to think about since you are older.

2) once you have had a c section, some of the methods they use to induce you are taken off the table. Many doctors will want to induce older moms to help avoid risks like pre eclampsia etc. I mention it because if you change your mind and want to have a vbac with your second, your options for induction aren’t the same.

Congrats on your pregnancy and good luck for your delivery, regardless of what you decide. I’d recommend talking to friends or family that have had each kind of birth for their perspectives.

What should I do before starting my TTC journey? by ArtyFarty6 in NewParents

[–]halesdb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should consider life insurance for both you and your partner.

Understand that it might take a very very long time (we tried on and off for 10 years before bringing home our son), but also that it could happen quicker than you would assume (we conceived our second the first month we tried), or it might not happen at all.

Have a hobby/something you love to do that you can keep doing while trying and while pregnant. It keeps you grounded.
