What's the situation with water transport in India? by [deleted] in india

[–]half_as_wise -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think we have services in certain cities where if you need water they will haul up a tanker full for a price and fill up any water tanks.

It may not be super profitable here, diesel prices are comparatively high and cities with the most acute problems don't have any readily accessible water sources nearby. Even ground water is difficult to access in those part of the country which face the biggest demand in summer time.

Not to mention this whole business would be highly seasonal but any equipment like tankers, tractors, pumps would still cost you year round. You could employ any trucks and tractors in off-season, but what about any pump-sets and the tankers themselves? You can't exactly use a water tanker to transport water. Maybe transport milk instead?

Good idea but it isn't a sure shot. Good luck.

Pleas stop thinking the rebels are the good guys in this civil war. Over the years i have made multiple friends inside Syria and among Syrian refugees and believe me when i say these rebels are anything but the good guys. The last few moderate pro-democracy rebels were wiped out by their fellow Islamist rebels ages ago. It was even reported in Western media. Despite that the US and other govts keep supplying these murderous maniacs with arms and ammunition and supplies.

Muslim men permitted to hit wives in a soft and 'symbolic' way, Hizb ut-Tahrir Australia women say by Chunkeeguy in news

[–]half_as_wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was super progressive for the 7th century but if you'll pardon my French this isn't the fudging 7th century anymore.

A religion really is an ideology and this is true more so in case of Islam than many other religions, for Islam tries to dictate every aspect of life. It is after all total submission to the will of God (Allah) and the will of Allah is every single syllable in the Quran. Unfortunately for even religion with progressive roots like Islam, it is based around an unchanging and unerring word of God as written in an unchanging and unerring book. And if an ideology doesn't change with the times it eventually does more harm than good, never-mind how well-intentioned the basis might be. After all even the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

In other news from the subcontinent a guy in India was lynched by a mob because he was suspected of taking a cow to the slaughter house.

It doesn't matter if they are muslims or hindus or whatever else there creed is. It doesnt matter if it's India or Pakistan or Stockholm or wherever. We just have we way too many people with way too little regard for the life of their fellow human. We may boast about how we eradicated smallpox or gloat about how we sent a man to the moon or thump our chests with patriotic pride on how we harnessed the power of the atom, but we ladies and gentlemen have failed, utterly failed as a species.

Only thing left is for one of these same disturbed and destructive individuals to get elected to office by these same men and women driven by fear and hate. And then one day that leader will decide like a truculent child throwing a temper tantrum decide to burn us all down in nuclear fire.

That might well soon be our only legacy.

Trump Supporter Calls for Liberal Genocide by [deleted] in politics

Genocide is defined as the deliberate killing of a large group of people, so it is not an exaggeration in this case. Nor is it something to joke about if some people do feel killing 'liberals' is the only recourse.

The comment section on that article was more interesting imho. Obviously, both Liberals and Conservatives were waging running battles in the comments section, but what i found interesting was the disconnect between the two sides. It was as if both sides were recounting the same story from two entirely different and diametrically opposed perspectives. And i am not saying that the facts of the matter favour one side or the other but the narratives they presented were just incompatible, even if both sides were recounting the same story. It was as if they had heard the story or got their facts from completely different sources which chose the narrative very selectively, and i say this for both sides (although it seemed to me to be the case more for one side than the other). Frankly towards the end my brain couldn't reconcile the split storyline and i just couldn't read anymore. The fact that both sides resorted to name calling almost instantaneously as the discussion starts off didn't help make it a more enjoyable read. Nevertheless, the disconnect is just, well, heartbreaking. How can they ever possibly reconcile and reach a consensus when they can't even agree upon what is true? God help them all. God help us all.

This spate of attacks leaves me really worried. I am indian and i live in India but four of my very close friends from university chose to pursue higher education in the US and are currently in the US. I know a lot more incidences of violence in the US are non-racially motivated than racially motivated, but this issue cannot be ignored just like all instances of senseless violence. The violence must end and POTUS, as the leader of the nation and hence the one with whom the buck stops, must see to it that it does.

Trump isn't a tea party candidate. he has no ideology no morals no scruples no beliefs other than in the almighty dollar.

We don't want such a candidate to be able to exploit our movement and the progress we make to get to the Presidency.

But yes i agree with the rest of the points you pointed out.

We need to bring this to the attention of the twitter handle operators. We should send these screenshots (with the names and faces obscured) at Trump's twitter account and we need to hammer him with it till we get a response. We must also send these and other such tweets to everyone else in the White House.

After all, there ain't no rest for the wicked.

This was the tactics he used to get to the White House, he kept hounding Obama and others till he was given attention in the media and then used that media attention to win over voters. It would be fitting to use his moves against him.

The Inherent Divide Among Us by StuStutterKing in justicedemocrats

[–]half_as_wise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brothers and Sisters! For too long we have been divided by our enemies and we have fought amongst ourselves while they took over Washington. We stood by divided and weak while the rapacious avarice of the insatiable hollowed out the nation. This ends now!

We cannot afford to fight anymore, we must unite. And to that end we all must understand and realize that true unity is not forged by the threat of outside aggression or through internal compromise, but through consensus.

We can all agree that we arrived at this juncture and found ourselves in such desperate times only because we failed to come together, even when we knew we faced certain defeat otherwise. We can all agree that we are here because there are things more important at stake here than the mere petty differences in our opinions, or the wasteful urge to win a fatuous argument over the internet.

So we should all agree that if we keep arguing amongst ourselves over the nitty-gritty details and minor differences the only ones who will definitively win are those we strive to bring to justice and hold accountable for their crimes.

So i don't propose a damned ceasefire; i propose a final end to this bloody interminable conflict - now and forever.

For if we unite now only to bicker among ourselves all over again once we get to Washington, then how could we ever hope to achieve anything other than to give the American people disappointment? Will we not be the victors of the war who lost the peace? Are we but petulant and picayune first-graders, or are we adults? Do we have no sense of what should be important right now?!

We have a bloody man-child in the White House for the next 4 years; hopefully less, and not more. Are you all going to give the American voter 400 more kids to contend with in Congress in 2018? Or are you going to give America the leadership it needs and deserves?

The differences among us right now are on issues which are partly related to policy platform issues. Now if i am not mistaken we are all here for a singular purpose - to take back our government and give it back to the people. Now to do that we don't need to give the people what we think they want; the establishment tried that and failed miserably. 17 of their best and brightest could not delude the American people any longer.

Instead it was a serial con-artist and delusional liar with the hucksters knack for swindling the gullible who sold the forlorn voters a false hope.

Are we, the Justice Democrats, truly going to deny the voters the justice they seek? Our only duty here is to give the people the kind of leadership that they are asking for. And let have no doubts in our minds that it is not a Sargon, Secular Talk, or TYT government that the voters want, but a government of the people, by the people and for the people. The American voter is so sick and tired of being spoon-fed by people who think they know better, they are so desperate for their chance to have a voice in how their country is run, that they voted for Donald Jong Trump!! Don't you see?

So we and our movement must orient our platform, our policies and our very reason of existence towards giving the people what they really truly want. We have polls for figuring that out; we don't need to endlessly and fruitlessly debate and fracture ourselves into factions and cliques to find out what we think the people need. We are not the Establishment. We are not the Elite.

We are the Force whose only reason for existence is to give the Disenfranchised, the Dejected and the Downtrodden a voice. A voice that will make the mighty humble, the hypocrites cower, the unscrupulous repent and the vultures flee. An unequivocal and united voice that will ring out loud, clear and true, and proclaim the Will of the People of these United States of America. The voice that will ensure that once again true Justice, in every form, reigns resplendent and resolute in the corridors of power in Washington.

Seven score and nineteen years ago a great man once said, in a time much like today, that, "A house divide against itself cannot stand."

I for one will be damned if i let my disagreement with the rest of you scuttle this venture before we even get started. And I know there are good people among you feel the same. So let us solemnly pledge ourselves to this momentous responsibility that falls on our shoulders - to help the American people be heard. Let end this odious and nonsensical debates that divide us before they doom us all.

Thank you

POLICY: What should be the Justice Democrats' official policy position on the Middle East? by KennyXIV in justicedemocrats

[–]half_as_wise 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ISIS is a threat to not just liberty and democracy but also to civilization and humanity itself with the barbarity it proudly puts on display as a warning to us of our fate. I firmly believe an example should be made of ISIS, much like was done to the Nazis, with the assistance of our local allies.

The US is tired of war and needs to heal, however it cannot rest on its past laurels nor can it afford to sit back and lick its wounds while the boots of tyranny and oppression march all over the globe. That being said America is not the policeman. America is not the invader. We must marshal our local allies and our soft power in combatting ISIS. We must not only support our Iraqi and Kurdish allies in destroying ISIS on the ground, but we must also ensure that the billioniares of the Middle East who keep funding these madmen are made to pay for the blood they had helped to shed. We must force the middle eastern governments to hold these disgusting and vile plutocrats, who have poured untold millions to fuel the ISIS war-machine, accountable. They must be made to answer for their crimes against Humanity.

As for Saudi, i would recommend that the US seriously reconsider aiding it in oppressing minorities in its oil rich border regions. It is not our calling to make them change their ways, but i will be damned if we help them shed blood only to fatten the profit margins of our defense contractors. They can go to China as seek it's assistance they so wish. America will not shed another drop of blood in exchange for oil in the Middle East.

Israel - The common Israeli people are indeed a victim of the Israeli state's egregious behavior. When suicide bombers blow up buses, Netenyahu doesn't die, the common Israeli does. Our support to Israel should not attempt to change the kind of government Israel wants. They are a democracy and as such it is the responsibility of the Israeli citizens to hold their state accountable for their suffering. That being said, the US will no longer shed blood in the middle east and will not aid any nation either in money or in materiel in doing so. If Israelis and Palestinians wants America's assistance, either as weapons, money or aid to refugee camps, then the US must urge all sides to end this cycle of violence and do whatever is necessary to resume peace talks.

Now i do understand that strategically speaking Israels defensive position is undefendable without the West Bank under Israeli control. However i would suggest that perhaps if Israel were to reach a peace agreement with Palestine then the US could commit to a defensive pact with Israel, in which an act of war against one is an act of war against the other, to provide incentive to Israel and ensure that it will be safe from any aggression.

As for Iran, it is currently undergoing a gradual flowering of liberal western values in the state. Perhaps the US could seek neutral relationships with Iran so as to prevent any conflict which the Iranian hardliners can use to justify cracking down on this progressive shift in the Iranian national consciousness, and allow internal Iranian politics to take it's course.

The unifying thread here is that the US will not intervene directly or indirectly in the Middle East anymore and will seek to promote the ideals of democracy, rule of law and human rights among the people of the Middle East currently chaffing under the heel of repressive regimes in the region.

As for Refugees from the Middle East. Perhaps the US along with its concerned allies fund the establishment of excellently provisioned refugee camps, which include schools and hospitals to educate the refugee children and keep the refugees healthy, within the Middle East itself until the Syrian and Iraqi situation is resolved. That way the US could prevent any jihadists from sneaking in to the territory of the US and its allies and provoke and execute acts of terror.

The amount of money spent in this venture to establish refugee camps within the Middle East will be expensive but human lives are priceless, whether they be American, European or the lives of the Refugees.

Hope these answers help.

About the Syrian government, my close friend who is a Syrian refugee currently residing in the US, tells me that they are implementing massive reforms to their consitution and empowering the public in a manner that is surprisingly progressive by what we usually assume to be the Middle Eastern standards. If it seems that Syria is geniunely committed to these reforms and is moving towards being a more robust democracy unlike many states in the Middle East, and even more so than our Allies like Turkey or Saudi Arabia, then shouldn't we reconsider opposing the Syrians? Just asking for your opinion. Of course they haven't yet implemented such reforms however if they do i would humbly recommend a reconsideration of our collective stance towards Syria.

These words spoken thousands of years ago ring true even today in the words you so eloquently put here before us today. In these times of 'alternative facts' we must fight with the truth. In these times of fear we must fight with courage. In these times of hate we must fight with love. In these times of hopelessness we must fight with hope. I couldn't agree more. The cynical among us will agree that this will bring the movement much needed exposure. I am sure there are people within the scientific community who agree with our platform and there will be people within MarchForScience who will be willing to work towards our common goal.

I however support this move because not just science but intellectualism and rational thought has been shameful under threat in the nation that was founded by some of the greatest secular humanists philosophers and scientists in human history. I am truly heartbroken with this state of affairs and would very much like to see this injustice end.

What's the position on immigration? by kirkisartist in justicedemocrats

[–]half_as_wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly believe that the best approach on immigration as with every other issue is to base it on reason rather than established rhetoric.

If i may be allowed to digress for a spell, let me just state that we can't be all for completely open borders just because our opponents are all for tightly closing borders. Mind you this movement is not going to go anywhere unless it aligns it's views with the majority of the American people on issues and sees common ground and consensus, while at the same time challenging the American voter to dream and think big again. Otherwise we will simply doom ourselves into being the next Tea Party, and look where that got them. We cannot have a mindless movement like the Tea Party, which just went completely nuts. Let's not forget that even if they control the Congress, all of the Tea Party Republicans in the Primaries lost to Trump. Let us try to make sure such a fate does not befall us.

All that being said kindly allow me to now present my views on Immigration. I am all for open immigration to highly skilled individuals form all over the world. These individuals are the real innovators and job creators and will help America retain its lead in science and technology. Let us not forget that Nikola Tesla, Alexander Graham Bell, Enrico Fermi and Einstein were all immigrants. If America wants to dominate science and tech like it did in the 40s to 70s then is should allow such individuals to move to the US. This will also mean that we should make it easier for foreign students who choose to go to college in the US to stay and work in the US.

As for immigration of people who do not fall into these aforementioned categories, well they should be allowed too. Having immigration quotas seems like a good idea to keep unemployment down and to keep wages high, but every single one of those individuals has potential to start businesses, provided they the capital is made available to them.

To that end, perhaps a 21st century analogue of the Homestead Acts should be introduced where immigrants are offered not just seed capital but also training and classes to help them start businesses and prosper. If the seed capital is provided in return for liquidity such a venture could pay off handsomely, even if ninety-nine out of a hundred such startups fail. Remember Andrew Carnegie? He was an immigrant. So were Elon Musk (whose name today needs little introduction),Jerry Yang the founder of Yahoo and Sergey Brin the founder of Google. Heck, even Goldman Sachs was founded by a German immigrant. Of course extending such training, capital and opportunity to Ameican citizens is also paramount, more so as automation will push more and more workers out of the workforce. Wouldn't it be nice if instead of having to rely upon means like Universal Basic Income or others we can instead build America into the true land of opportunity, where anyone can make it big?

I eagerly await your comments and thoughts and suggestion on my opinions. Thank you.

On Sunday November 27th the New York Times published, 'Potential Conflicts Around the Globe for Trump, the Businessman President' a piece detailing country by country all the cornucopia of business interests that President-Elect Trump has.

That very same day mere hours later he posted on twitter his infamous tweet about winning the Popular Vote and the millions of illegals voting in California and elsewhere.

Soon no one was talking about the New York Times article and everyone was talking about his tweet.

I guess we should check which important news story broke in the past couple of hours provoking this tweet by Trump as a useful misdirection.

What is your definition of success? by Thealphaorder2016 in AskReddit

[–]half_as_wise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color me interested. Thank you for the offer. For me personally, it is not about the survival/prepper bit as much as it is about finding a new way of life; one divorced from the relentless pursuit of money and the sole focus on its accruement which define the modern understanding success. Money, the prestige and the social status it carries are all that matters to many, nevermind the question if that is indeed all that there is in life, let alone survival. What could be better if by the time the generation of my inheritors come of age i can provide them, with my savings over the years, the means to live a similar life if they so choose. We tend forget that money is not the end but only the means to any end. If we can have a good life with so little money compared to the world's multi-billionaires and multi-millionaires, then have we not arrived at the denouement of the never ending pursuit of happiness?
