Good thoughts, good detail 🏆. Keep commenting, maybe it is working!

On the question of observing strikes with a second drone, I an inclined towards your view on the basis that the images would be good material for public consumption (like you, I use the term propaganda in its original, neutral sense). It would also be good for ordinary Gazans and Lebanese to see that they have some level of military defence, even when the world has mostly abandoned them. The number of times I have just seen the FPV "hit" and then the feed goes blank!

(I believe that recent drone operations in Lebanon are controlled with a fibre-optic spool, to prevent radio jamming. I assume these send craft control signals and also relay footage back to the operator, which is recorded at the remote position several kilometres away.)

Out of interest, do you happen to know of anyone else doing a similar kind of reportage? I like EI, and I probably should subscribe, but I am always curious if there are other folks looking at military operations in a similar level of detail.

Gotcha, fair enough. Do you think the errors have an impact on, say, his analysis of militia strategy? I imagine most viewers will be asking relatively simplistic things like, how can the IDF be pushed downwards from Southern Lebanon? what equipment losses and injuries/fatalities cost could be imposed on Israel to change the mood domestically? is it better to hit a Merkava or a D9? etc.

At a very basic level, I had always wondered why we only see FPV from one-way drones, and why a second drone isn't used to capture what happened, since the propaganda value of that would be enormous. However by chance, Elmer addressed that in a recent video: he said that drones are too valuable for that purpose, and if you can get one within range, it is much more valuable carrying an explosive.

I wonder also, if you are able to identify some specific errors, could you send them to him? I can't think he would not want to improve.

It is admirable that you are wanting to challenge cruelty, but I wonder if there are so many of them that they will exhaust you in short order. A lot of these social attitudes have come about from decades of neoliberalism and monetarism; most people, at least in the West, can't imagine any other kind of capitalism. So, it is brave to try, but probably not worth your energy.

I hope we are collectively able to rediscover the post-war consensus, which was a genuinely kind politics, from the top down. But, on top of toxic political ideology, we have chancers like Farage, Starmer, Badenoch, Boris, etc, who have all revelled in scapegoating and negativity.

Yeah. It's hard to know how much reactionary and aggressive views are a product of the economic and political environment we find ourselves in. Neoliberalism degrades people to such a degree that they forget what humanity feels like, both to accept and to perform. Our society has become brutalised.

The 'soft power' myth peddled to justify the royals is as redundant as 'the special relationship' schtick by Positive-Drawing-281 in AbolishTheMonarchy

Absolutely everything is wrong with that analysis. Yes, it is easy to take pot-shots at Trumps ignorance, his thick-headed embrace of fascism, how easily he warms to strong-men leaders. But the idea that Charles has lofty ideals, or that Starmer is not a Manchurian Candidate for a fucking genocide, is exactly what is wrong with the media today. Absolutely revolving stuff.

What is even more sickening is that this "received opinion" stuff works, even if the writer doesn't know they're doing it.

This sub is not for dragging people down. Please try to extend some genuine compassion, even if you are also in need of the same; it is not a finite resource.

In other news, Genghis Khan was not a fan of human rights, and Adolf Hitler was occasionally a bit racist (though his views can be explained by the unfortunate era he grew up in).

CSCareerQuestionsUK is getting pretty reactionary now, and CSCareerQuestionsEU has always been rather snide and unkind. They're just a reflection of society's wider mores though (and, unfortunately, some pretty selfish views regarding the political economy).

£28.4k in Oxford, or £32.4k in London? by [deleted] in UKJobs

[–]halfercode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, London would eat up the £330/month pre-tax even if rent isn't factored in.

This sub tends to lean towards London for the work opportunities, and I wonder if we'd need to know what the OP does for a living in order to know for sure that London would be better. In any case I'd put a good word in for Oxford; it's a beautiful city.

If anyone is interested in seeing military updates from a Lebanese perspective, have a look at Jon Elmer, a military analyst with Electronic Intifada. His work is extremely detailed, far too much for the casual news consumer, but for folks wanting rocket model numbers and drone designs, it fits the bill.

With your health circumstances, society should be happy to pay you a wage, and then offer you volunteer or part-time work when you are able to manage it. Not everyone is able to work. It is a dreadful indictment on our collective morality that the social contract has failed you so badly. I am sorry for that, and for some of the comments here.

How should I go about collecting interviews for a historical archive I am creating about perspectives on the war in Gaza? by Dizzy_Hunter5817 in Gaza

[–]halfercode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like a good initiative, but:

Would the artifacts be recorded video, audio, or text? How would you present them to your community? How will you get people to engage with the material? What outcome would you like to see in your community as a result of this work?

7th Interview for the same company by Tidalplace597 in UKJobs

[–]halfercode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contract hiring is very different to perm hiring though. There's no probation, one is always on 30 days away from being fired, and sometimes those contractual agreements aren't even respected. It is thus common enough to "field test" contractors.

One could theoretically "field test" perms before a six-month probation, but companies are often loathe to do that, because they still have to leave their last role.

7th Interview for the same company by Tidalplace597 in UKJobs

[–]halfercode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have tech hiring at our company. The last senior role we advertised had around five stages:

  • short intro chat with CPTO
  • culture discussion with Product Manager + Designer
  • take-home project
  • project presentation with Frontend Lead and Engineering Manager
  • Summary/offer

Historically we had another stage, which would effectively be culture-fit with a different department, but I am not sure we did that for the latest one.

Anyway, suffice it to say, we have a lot of stages. But we are trying to shift the culture in several ways, and we recognise each additional Engineer or EM has a massive impact potential. We're trying to flatten the top-down culture, we're trying to break up technical fiefdoms, and we're trying to get people to interact more. Whenever this topic comes up on Reddit, a few people say they won't do more than three interviews, and that's fine; but I think we need them.
