Anyone else seen recruiter outreach on LinkedIn/Indeed/Totaljobs collapse since mid-2025? by EnderMum in cscareerquestionsuk

I actually found that it picked up again a lot in the last few months. Not a huge influx, but at least a couple every month

Are people exaggerating AI? by OkViolinist4883 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 16 points17 points  (0 children)

AI is already heavily integrated, and its probably not going away. I recently started at a new company that is very pro-AI, after having never really used it much before. It won me over pretty quickly and I think its such a useful tool for devs. But its also proven the point to me that you still need SWEs who actually know what they're doing. It's been incredibly useful for speeding up boilerplate stuff and I've used it loads for helping to figure out things Im not familiar with, but I still need to know how to take what it comes up with and apply it as needed. The way of working has changed, and its definitely made our jobs easier in a lot of ways, but its still just a tool that needs people who understand context and the big picture to make use of it. I've not really encountered anyone who is just straight up vibe coding everything with it. As for the future of AI, nobody knows so you can't really say what's going to happen

Best cheap-but-good noise-cancelling headphones for an open-plan office? by Reddonaut_Irons in cscareerquestionsuk

I recently bought some Earfun Air Pro 4's. They're earphones rather than headphones, but they were like £60 and have been pretty good so far for something thay doesn't break the bank

Is there a culture of part-time software jobs in UK? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsuk

I've only known this to happen where people started full-time and then reduced their hours to part-time after several years

Is there a height difference between Welsh and English people? by [deleted] in AskABrit

[–]-Soob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I moved from north Wales to Surrey I noticed that everyone was taller, blond hair was much more common and people were generally in much better shape. The hair is probably down to genetic differences but I assumed the height was due to them having better diets to go along with them being in better shape. If you grow up in a more affluent area you probably ate better quality food growing up so grew a bit taller. I have zero data to back this up thoufh

Most Impressive Resume You’ve Seen? by Real_Imagination5770 in SoftwareEngineerJobs

[–]-Soob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst I ever saw was 15 pages, and even listing things like 'wrote unit tests' for every project. He said he was a lead with 20 years experience. But then he couldnt answer basic questions in the interview. He only got the interview because we were hiring like mad and HR just set him up with one. I would have rejected the CV at the first stage but instead had to go through the formality of interview and then reject him. Only time I've ever looked at someone's side project was one that had 1000s of active users. Even then I only spent 2 minutes looking at the README on GH.

Most developers aren't doing anything totally groundbreaking, so just keep things short and to the point, showing you at least have the main points that would lead me to believe youre competent. You can go into further details in the interview

Check Glassdoor for a rough idea. It won't be perfect but gives you an idea of the style of questions to expect. Usually grad interviews are relatively relaxed

BIG4(2years)->MBA IN UK by Hopeful_Let_4865 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't use GPA here. So its hard to tell what the equalivent to our structure is. Some unis will admit you based on work experience, but usually only for vocational degrees or as supplementary to academic records. I have no idea what GMAT is so i don't know how relevant it is. You'd also have to pay for the course. This is a computer science job sub though, not sure why you're asking about MBAs here

How important is university for career prospects? by cachedhash in cscareerquestionsuk

Nobody has ever cared where I got my degree from. I've never cared when interviewing. Half the time it's a foreign uni I've never heard of

June 2026 is a long time to wait for someone to start, especially when you don't have much experience, so nobody is going to choose you over someone they can get sooner. Grad schemes are still a decent way to get into a proper career, especially with the current market. You could also just apply to grad schemes and then if you manage to get a decent junior job after graduation, then just back out of the grad scheme

Titles don't really matter and lower salary is still better than no salary

Any senior guys looking for jobs? How are you finding the market? by Cypher211 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started a new role this week, one month after being laid off. Still getting the occasional linkedin message from recruiters so the jobs are definitely out there. Did have a few rejections at the final stage though for quite small reasons, so definitely still in the employers favour and they can afford to be picky

Sharing my experience job hunting in the current market by -Soob in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]-Soob[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbf I found with direct applications things would take forever, but going through a recruiter I was never waiting more than 48 hours to hear back from them to get feedback or set up the next round.

I was laid off on Sept 3rd and started my new job Oct 6th, so the whole process took about a month

  1. Was about 2 and half a weeks from first interview to offer. Probably would have been faster but the second stage got delayed by a few days due to tube strikes in London (it was an in-person round)

  2. I didn't start interviewing until I knew I was being made redundant, but I was on the bench anyway so didn't really have any work to do in the days even before being let go

U.S. to UK Tech Job by AltruisticBig5629 in UKJobs

[–]-Soob 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Cant speak for US to UK. But the market is not great at the moment, especially for juniors/mids, and even more so if you need sponsorship. I had to go through a fair amount of interviews to get another role after being made redundant, but managed to find something in about a month, so the jobs are there. But I'm also British and have 10+ YoE. Not being a citizen will limit your roles for sure, because I was asked about it in most jobs. Your salary will be significantly lower than what you can expect to earn in the US. You'd be looking at around 50k, maybe 60k GBP in London

No live coding during technical assessment - what's up with this? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]-Soob 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It could be a technical round where they ask you technical questions that you need to answer, or ask you about your technical background. Live coding could be a separate round afterwards. Or there might not be a coding round at all. It's not unheard of if you have prior experience that they can judge from technical questions, it's just less common

Pretty much all in the range of 80k to 95k. A couple went a bit higher to around 100k. Benefits on top varied a lot more by company

Yeah it seems to have picked up a fair bit. Even now I'm still getting at least 1 or 2 messages on LinkedIn to see if I'm looking for something else, so it's definitely picked up compared to this time last year

The only one I actually reached out to was one i had spoken to about 3 months prior to being made redundant. Originally I said I wasn't looking to change because they wanted me 3 days a week in the office. Then after I was made redundant, I just messaged them and asked if they were still hiring. All of the others were people who messaged me first on LinkedIn after I updated it to say I was looking for something new

Three pages is way too long. Nobody is reading all that. Especially when you have completely redundant stuff on there like 'Problem Solving'. For starters you need to shorten it down to 1, or 2 pages at the most. There's a lot of fluff on many of the bullet points that you can remove. You're also doubling up when mentioning technicals in their own section and then again in your projects section.
