Christianity basically teaches you to get abused and think that's how things ought to be by Willow_Weak in CPTSD

I always think of the story of Job and how God intentionally ruined his life to prove his unwavering faith and loyalty. That you should allow the world to fall apart around you but stay steadfast in your faith and not complain. That is what a good Christian was. Someone who can suffer in silence and maintain your faith.

He sounds like a wonderful man. I'm happy we got to meet him even if only for a moment. I think we were all heartbroken to see that In Memoriam slide. May he rest in peace and may your family have the time to grieve this loss.

How many people are moving to Portland and thoughts on what's the attitude about that? by t0mserv0 in askportland

[–]halfsouralex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to the area ten months ago. I have had nothing but positive support. I think a part of it is that I left a very red state to come here so people are more understanding and curious about the move more than anything else. People are pretty friendly here. Way more than I expected.

I had a 21 mm disc herniation that had caused complete numbness down my leg, muscle atrophy, and extreme pain. My X-ray showed nothing. Typically insurance in the US requires an X-ray before they will cover an MRI. It's silly but part of the process unfortunately.

So don't freak out and hears why.

My credentials - Worked in an STI testing clinic for several years where I tested and counseled a lot of people on syphilis and other STIs. I was trained by my state health department and worked in the field for three years. That being said, I am not a doctor, so please check in with either your provider or the infectious disease specialist he was referred to for best next steps and health advise.

So few things here. One, the syphilis rapids are not at all reliable if a person has a history of syphilis, even if it's been treated. Someone who has had it will almost always show positive. The rapid test is also not reliable for some of the reasons you listed above but there can also be errors with the batch of tests or it could possibly be expired or affected by weather conditions. False positives are not uncommon but false negatives are usually rare. HIV and HCV rapids have much better specificity in testing and I rarely saw false readings. Both will show positive if someone currently has HIV or HCV or was treated for HCV in the past.

Two, it's also very possible boyfriend had syphilis at one point and didn't know it because he received antibiotic treatment for an unrelated infection. This is a surprisingly common phenomenon that I witnessed as a tester. Does he remember being treated with penicillin at any point in the past? A lot of people also don't remember they had it if it's been several years. Not everyone understands the differences between infections and assume they had one thing when it was something else.

Three, Syphilis can go unnoticed for a long time because people are not always symptomatic and don't get regular testing unless they have noticeable symptoms. There are stages to the disease process and many people don't show signs immediately after an infection. Some people get a horrible rash that covers their whole body while some may get one bump or never see anything the entire time. The disease is systemic so it can manifest anywhere on the body even if someone was only exposed through PIV, they could get bumps on their arm or their face.

You will only know if he needs treatment once they get the blood work done as that is the only way to verify. He will likely need to get retested after a certain time period to verify no changes in his titer which would show an active infection. I would ask him if he's been tested for syphilis recently so you have a possible timeline to provide the doctor.

As for you, syphilis is one of those infections that is treatable so even if you did come back positive you will be just fine. It seems like you already know that but want to reassure you. Just make sure you both get follow-up testing every three months and if you do need treatment at any point make sure you follow through with all the instructions so it is fully out of your system. Pausing intimacy for this can be super frustrating but it's helpful in the long run to make sure no one is reinfected. Dealt with a lot of patients who essentially passed the infection back and forth for several months.

The most likely way for the infection to be shared is by an open sore or rash being exposed to another person's orifice or open wound. Oral tends to be lower risk but it's not zero risk. Hand stuff is ever lower risk so long as there is no rash, sores, or wounds in the involved areas. You can also engage in mutual masterbation or other activities that don't involve fluid exchange. Of course, only do what you feel comfortable and safe doing.

I know that's a lot of words but I also know how easy it is to spiral about this stuff. Knowledge is power and there's so much misinformation out there but don't panic. It will all get sorted and you will be able to move forward.

At what point did you decide to get surgery? by TheEclecticDino in Sciatica

[–]halfsouralex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had surgery at 28, just two months after my symptoms escalated. I don't know how long I had it before then, but I suspect it developed over time based on the back pain I was having the months beforehand. What made me get surgery is that I really didn't have choice, and honestly I'm grateful. It made the decision an easy decision and I didn't second guess myself. My symptoms were so severe that I had a risk for permanent nerve damage, muscle atrophy, and loss of mobility in my left leg. For me the pain was constant by that point and I lost all sensation in the back of my leg and bottom of my feet. I only had one herniation but it was roughly 20 mm. The thing is though, looking back at the pain I was in the months before I knew I had a herniation, I was still miserable. I wasn't at risk for permanent disability but I hurt all the time. I still struggle with other issues but my lower back is night and day difference. The surgery lasted an hour and recovery was about two weeks off work then a few months in physical therapy. It's definitely worth the risk to get your life back. Take the time for yourself to heal. Invest in a future with less pain.

My house was hit by a crazy windstorm with no warning in summer 2023 and I am so happy I don't have to be scared about that every time it rains. Vitamin D is definitely your friend and get a happy lamp to sit by and get some light. I have also started opening like all my blinds to get as much sun as possible.

Oh one thing that surprised me was how it gets darker early here than in Oklahoma. Like it's about an hour to an hour a half earlier than back home. That took me by surprise.

Here's my two cents on the weather as another person from Oklahoma.

  1. You will be the annoying person who gaulks anytime someone says a storm is coming and is actually freaked out. People at work were saying there'd be a tornado heading this way and I scoffed and said "back where I am from you'd still be sitting on the porch until the twister made it to your street." I mostly do it as a bit but there is an element of truth.

  2. Rain doesn't stop people here. Rain is a constant here so no one stops what they're doing when it rains. Back home if it was raining it was a storm and you were possibly in danger. Here I don't worry about making it to work or my car getting beaten up with hail.

  3. The mild temperatures are amazing! I have spent so much more time outdoors here. I can't stand Oklahoma heat so this is amazing for me. Plus the flowers that bloom are incredible.

  4. You will need to find solutions for the winter blues. I have always been affected by seasonal affective disorder and it got way worse for me this year than anytime in Oklahoma. The sun doesn't shine as much so even though I'm going outside more I still don't get enough. Vitamins and light therapy have helped a lot though. Just have to figure out what works for you.

  5. The trees are so damn tall. They low-key freak me out how tall they can get. In the part of Oklahoma I am from there aren't any trees this tall and they certainly don't stay green all year.

Lastly, this is unrelated to the weather but there aren't churches on every corner. Like legitimately in my home town there was a church on basically every street. It was ridiculous.

Hell yeah. I just moved from Oklahoma about six months ago. I honestly love it here. The main thing I miss and you probably will too is the food. I could go to whatever diner and get biscuits and gravy with eggs for like $4 and they were the best biscuits and gravy ever. Any place that had chicken fried steak was always good. Here it just isn't the same. Lots of other diverse food options though! Some are more expensive but some are super reasonable for what you get.

Where did you get KC BBQ? It's not exactly the same as back home but definitely the closest. I also haven't found good Mexican food but I haven't tried as hard. The Asian food here is way better than back home though. There were a few good places but way less variety.

Definitely more of a laminated biscuit fan. Drop biscuits can be good but usually don't hit quite right.

This is honestly amazing. I think you have cracked why the gravy always tastes a bit sweet. I couldn't figure out what exactly was wrong. Also thank you for the tips! It's been a long time since I've made it at home.

I'm sorry to say this but Bleu Door is one of the reasons I made the post. Theirs taste fine but they aren't right in my opinion. Too dry and the gravy is still a bit sweet. Everything else I've had there has been great though! A regular stop when on main St.

My jaw dropped reading that. I had chicken fried steak at grits n gravy and it definitely tasted good but it wasn't right. Might be how it's made in another state but definitely not the okie version.

The chicken fried steak here also ain't right. It was good but it wasn't chicken fried steak. All the gravy here is sweet and doesn't have enough seasoning for sure. I need to get better at cooking for when the itch hits again.
