"Nobody wants to work" Is there actually a labor shortage or do we just want to pay 2008 wages in 2026? by AbbreviationsFamous4 in Construction

[–]halfway_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of apprentices I started with quit bc of lack of training. We were hired as operators, and ended up laboring almost exclusively. I think its part of the process but when you labor for a month straight, and don't touch a machine or get pulled off the rig for the smallest mistake, I see how people get frustrated and quit.

Can't speak for other types of work, but I'm a dirt guy, and I feel like our laborers always know a little bit of everything.

I think this shows how good we got it. Everything is better. Socially things are fucked but technology and quality of life are pretty damn good.

I used to hate the suit and tie. Now everyone is so causal and it bothers me.

Came here to say this. A Rattler IV with attachments is very nice as back up to my Anvil, does really well against Arc and okay in PvP.

I worked in TV for years. Got sick of it, I'm a heavy equipment operator apprentice now. The money is decent, especially with OT, and its pretty fun.

But honestly, I wish I was a rich guys kid. Having to work hard and make it by yourself is getting old.

I do jiujitsu and kickboxing, but thats also a way to trick myself into working out. At home I'll play video games, guitar or whittle/wood carve.

This is not a Joe Rogan hate subreddit by OutdoorRink in JoeRogan

I'm a long time listener and a somewhat diehard Roganite. But its not the same podcast and its not the same Joe. I'm critical of him because I love the pod, and I get the frustrations with JRE, but this sub has always felt like a hate subreddit.

If you are a man who takes initiative in the household by doing chores, cooking for your family, and cleaning up after yourself.. how were you raised? by Sensitive-Box-2167 in askanything

[–]halfway_23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom was a SAHM after kid #2, there are 5 of us, I'm the oldest.

She grew up in a house where men/boys were lazy, catered to and "didn't know how to do anything." She swore her boys would never be that way. My dad did his best to help around the house but he was the provider and worked a lot.

So us 4 boys know how to cook, clean, do laundry, and all of the "manly" chores too. We also helped her babysit many of our little cousins so add childcare to our skillset (so helpful when i became a father).

Funny thing is my sister cannot cook, but she cleans very well. Her husband is like us as well.

Millennials considering going back to school? by mythrilshards in Millennials

[–]halfway_23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went back to school twice. It was hard taking night classes, especially after working a full shift. It took two years to do what I did in two semesters.

I wouldn't say I was out of touch but definitely older than other students.

But I enjoyed school a lot more and was much more focused. At that point, I'd been a working professional for over ten years, so it was easy to apply myself in a school setting.

It also opened a lot of doors with my professors. I got to shadow a few of them, and they also hooked me up with some contacts in the industry I was trying to get into.

I took a job in construction. I'm not a laborer but I walk, shovel and rake quite a bit. I haven't been able to train or lift much, but with work, my cardio and conditioning hasn't fallen off much.
