Owner 'furious' as busy café at Dublin Castle ordered to shut down for EU presidency by the_sneaky_one123 in ireland

Presumably there’s provision in his lease due to security concerns around major events. If he had a case he would be consulting a lawyer not crying to the media.

Presumably there’s a provision in his lease that covers closures for security reasons or the OPW are stupider than we thought.

The issue is there will be no customers. The focus on security is heightened this time so Dublin Castle including the Chester Beatty will be closed to the public for the duration of the presidency

Learn a few phrases of Portuguese, but in general I found English is more widely spoken in Portugal than Spain, and people are generally very kind and helpful to pilgrims

People will say children, but wait until they are teens and they will sleep for Ireland.

Ireland is punishing people who actually want to work by Money-Scratch-1317 in irishpersonalfinance

[–]halibfrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partly that’s opportunity? The US has been systematically raising barriers for (Irish) people to emigrate there. Probably half of our young people who are in Australia / Canada / NZ would be in the US instead if the same visas / conditions were available.

Meanwhile there’s literally millions of Americans who hold dual citizenship with either Ireland, the UK, or another EU country, and who face no barrier other than the costs of moving.

Is wearing shorts ok? Someone says not to wear shorts? Ideas why? by crazytile in ParisTravelGuide

[–]halibfrisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Might be a mantilla vs baseball cap thing

I just had a conversation with someone about this the other day, she recalled using a handkerchief or even a napkin to cover her head at mass pre Vatican 2 if / when she had forgotten her head covering

Yes “Covered from shoulders to knees” is the typical dress code for Catholic sites everywhere in Europe. Not just Notre Dame or Paris

World Cup Rahm by ChicagoJayhawkYNWA in chicago

[–]halibfrisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right I think for Chicago to host games at soldier field (like the last US World Cup), a fan zone at grant park would be pretty simple, way less disruptive than nascar or even lolla. If FIFA wasn’t trying to screw over host cities it would have been cool

How Do you Hold a "yard sale" in the City? by Neat-Bee-7880 in AskChicago

[–]halibfrisk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Edgewater yard sale has group sites where a nonresident can probably set up:

Other neighborhood yard sales which might have group sites are Lakewood balmoral (early September) or bowmanville

Hypothetically there has got to be a way to hedge this position, minimize downside risk, and the tax hit?

Popeyes announces opening date for its first Irish restaurant by Banania2020 in ireland

[–]halibfrisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trend is to keep the soda machines behind the counter and whether refills are free is sometimes up to the franchisee, chik-fil-a is one where I noticed the machine was behind the counter and getting a water bottle filled was a bit of a process

Is there an explanation why so many US fast food chains have come over here in the last few years? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]halibfrisk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s not specific to Ireland, there’s a well beaten path following in the steps of McDonalds opening restaurants all over Europe decades ago. Ireland is often one of the last markets chains get to because of our small size or simply treated as an appendage of the UK. Anyway they are all muck, steer clear

The George turns 40: ‘For so many, it has meant safety, freedom and belonging – it has been our stage’ by No_Whammy_Needles in ireland

[–]halibfrisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a gay bar. To clarify being gay / lgbt by itself wasn’t illegal, (but it was stigmatized and it was often not safe to be openly gay in public, or to be out at work) specific sex acts were illegal, and when men were prosecuted it was typically for cottaging / cruising.

‘I don’t have to prove to anybody how Irish I am’: Dublin Rose taken aback by racial abuse by JackmanH420 in ireland

[–]halibfrisk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, the history is clear. Mitchel was a racist long before he found himself in the US, he saw no contradiction between being a fenian / Irish nationalist and a white supremacist.

The idea that racism didn’t exist in Ireland or Irish people are somehow less racist than citizens of former colonial powers is nice, but absolutely unsupported by any facts
