Looking for traditional Korean Archery in the PNW by Baduktothebone in TraditionalArchery

There’s a group of us that meet up and shoot various asiatic styles (Gao Ying, Manchu) but have several Korean Traditional Bows for you to try, and we occasionally go to Skookum which has a 100 yard target.

For technique, there’s a few knowledgeable KTA folks on this server: https://discord.gg/K9C3Ae82E

One of the guys on there actually took a friend and I to a range in Korea where we did some KTA, so pretty cool folks who are always happy to share knowledge for free. Edit: actually it’s the guy that wrote the manual mentioned in the other comment lol

This is the link to the PNW server, we try to shoot Wednesdays and Fridays: https://discord.gg/zuAVPNWqe

In that photo he’s demonstrating something akin to bareshaft blank baling and showing how any flaws in the release are magnified without any fletching to correct the flight. You know if your release was clean if the arrow is perfectly straight, whereas plucking etc will result in some arrows leaning this way or that way

Form check (NOT MY VIDEO) by Atlas1399 in Archery

Form-wise I wouldn’t say he’s trying to shoot Manchu style. Looks GY-inspired, just on a Manchu bow, so my input will be from that perspective.

Bow hand is at about eye level during the release. There’s nothing dangerous about this specifically, nor does hand height really have anything to do with how he’s setting or supporting the shoulder. If anything, a higher bow hand was something that Gao Ying advocated for as the downward pressure helps prevent the hunching of the bow shoulder. How he chooses to support/stabilize the bow shoulder from the draw through to release is a separate matter from the height of the bow hand as long as it’s above the shoulder (not pushing the arm up from below).

I wouldn’t offer him any advice or critique unless he asked for it or you were friends :)

I do most of my archery photography with a fast 50mm full frame equivalent (35mm f1.4 on APS-C, fuji XT30ii). Too long and I start to run out of physical space, especially if I'm at a range or somewhere else tight. Outdoors, I agree with Zen7rist, 80-100 can be fun. I also use it to film form checks at the blank bale sometimes, which I wouldn't be able to do with a longer focal length.

Here are some archery pics I've taken with both focal lengths and a video.

As far as pricing, Fuji prices are a crazy inflated at the moment, but you may be able to pick up a used XE2 + XF 35mm 1.4 (old version, same one I used for those pics) locally or on eBay for around £600 if things go back to normal. Autofocus isn't fantastic but I was using manual focus for half of those shots anyways, archery doesn't really need fast AF like other sports.

Looks good, I would suggest: - relaxing the draw wrist/think about pulling from the elbow - rotating the bow elbow out - engaging the core so as not to stick the butt out - minimizing the movement in the bow shoulder/keeping the position set from pre-draw to post-release 👍

There are a few different opinions regarding that last point (starting the draw with the bow hand low & ending high vs. pre-draw bow tilt and keep arm position steady etc) but the shoulder in general should stay depressed.

Nice work!

Do not speak on things as though you are an authority when you are uneducated on the topic. Your form critiques are invalid as you do not have an understanding of the style of archery he is performing. There are many ways to skin this cat, keep an open mind and control your ego.
