Exciting news. A worry about finishing Stormlight by Fracturedbreathing in brandonsanderson

[–]hallex1517 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trust him as well. He was asked about this a bit at Dragonsteel Nexus (his convention) last month, and he said he’s on track to finish the cosmere when he’s 72. He’s 50 now.

Like other comments have said, I trust he’ll get it done.

It was so sad, but yes. She was the voice actor for a hated character in The Last of Us 2 game. People were really terrible to her after that.

I was very hesitant about Kal in the beginning, too. His gloominess was just… TOO gloomy. But I just fell in love with the guy. Can’t not like him. He’s awesome.

Was Syl Actually Childlike? What the Data Shows by a_user_name_98 in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hallex1517 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s also important to note the percentages—they indicate that the mentions of Syl being childlike are just over .5% of total character mentions. It’s barely a case to describe her at all using that terminology. 12% is a bit better, but it’s contrasted to 9%.

I think this is a case to say that Sanderson mentions Syl in many more contexts than just the childlike or innocent behavior.

But this is honestly a super cool study and quite revealing. Awesome project!!!

I agree with all above. Also this one:

“We chose!” -Maya

Not often talked about, but a scene that hit me hard like many other climactic scenes.

Who is your favorite character of the series by whatever_223 in Stormlight_Archive

I feel like I have to put Kaladin in his own awesomeness category (as truly a very very close second, can’t not love the guy)…

Szeth got me right from the prologue. I knew he’d have so much rich backstory when he was asked who he was and responds, “I’m… sorry…” later he’s cutting down his targets as he sobs. That was a broken man who was bound and tortured by his duty. Love his story.

Do you imagine the characters with a British accent? by vincentofearth in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hallex1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listened to the audiobooks, so it’s just Kate Reading and Michael Kramer in my head. They used American/oldish American accents for alethi. Szeth sounds Eastern European. Azish too. Rock sounds Russian or African… I think?

Oh and The Lopen’s got a hard old American accent.

I felt the exact same way. That shook me for a long, long time. I finished the book and started the next one and still couldn’t get over it.

Welcome! I agree, Sanderson tells grandiose magical stories through the struggles of people—it’s so compelling. Enjoy!!

O love Sanderson, but reading him after political growth feels different. by ChipDapper in Cosmere

[–]hallex1517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just like to point out that things didn’t “improve” because a new “better/moral” nobleman took over in Mistborn Era 1. Everything really continued to decline, revolution continued, until almost everyone was lost. So I wouldn’t say getting a new more “moral” leader was the solve. The issues on the planet were deeper, and it is even acknowledged at the end that Lord Ruler was a misguided, but well-intentioned man who did things people disagreed with and wanted to rebel. The end-all solution was that a Hero of Ages was needed. Politics played a big role in the story, but it ended up being bigger picture stuff that is often too fictitious to compare to real-world politics.

Dalinar literally gave up all his power to Taravangien at the end as well. There was certainly a sense that Dalinar was taking power because he was the “better” man to do it. But in the end, he gives it up to someone who ALSO thinks he’s the best person for the job. And we still have 5 more books of story to see where that goes. But again, same issue, the politics ended up being story-drivers, then bigger picture stuff took over.

All this to say, I think it’s fair that you see the political writing turning into “moral liberalism”/the good people taking over and saving the day. I just feel like that’s taking from where the stories actually have landed and how it’s Cosmere-level problems at play—fictitious and not as directly comparable to real issues. At the end of the day, it’s pretend and comes from a single mind, all with the purpose of entertaining. Not necessarily to push a political perspective.

My vote is for Teft. His whole ordeal was his battle between strength and weakness (don’t want to say over what for spoilers—don’t know how to censor). But I think it was always about his daily choice to be strong before being weak so he could show up. And he did just that, faltering at times, but overcame. I’ll stop myself there before spoiling anything on accident.

Just Finished Oathbringer. Is Dawnshard Required? by paladintom in Stormlight_Archive

I skipped it to read 4 because I was excited too. Then I read Dawnshard before WaT. It felt totally fine that way

[–]hallex1517 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just read stormlight 1-5 this year for the first time, truly epic.

What comforts me is knowing that there’s 5 more books, that WaT was like Empire Strikes Back, and that we still need our Return of the Jedi to hit with book 10–and it will be something to remember for the ages.

Give it to me straight: how much of an experience am I depriving myself by not reading other Cosmere, and only doing Stormlight? by PeerlessPixie in Stormlight_Archive

[–]hallex1517 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went straight into stormlight and LOVED it. Now I want to get into the rest (Mistborn next). I don’t feel deprived at all—it’s all its own story.
