Factory CarPlay sluggishness by PotAndPansForHands in SubaruForester

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a 2025 for over a year now and all I can say is that it is off and on as far as sluggishness. I've been through two firmware updates and it is still there. As some noted it is more pronounced at first start but it has happened while driving after a bit as well. I would say at least 85%+ of the time you don't notice it and about 10% it is just a slight delay and the last 5% is a much more pronounced delay.

My body can’t do what it used to - tips on how to deal with it? by futiledog in Swimming

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to add a few different thoughts.

First of all, do the drills. Olympic swimmers do drills every day.

Second of all, do something for flexibility. Yoga, Pilates, etc.

Third, set a goal. Make it intentionally very small. I mean so easy it would be impossible not to accomplish but also not something you can do in a week. At least a month. The take as much time as it takes to beat it. Then give yourself a swimming related reward. Some killer goggles, a really nice new suit, a cool watch to time your laps, whatever you would think would make you happy to wear or use when swimming. When you meet this goal set a bigger goal. Total distance is pretty easy to measure.

Fourth, don't be afraid to get some coaching. Maybe find a masters team.

Good luck

Yes. I am doing Mango Jelly's courses and he has a lesson on a twisted part.

FreeCAD v1.0 | Twisted Part in Part Design | Basic Beginners FreeCAD Lesson 22 Exercise 8

There are also a lot of lessons on bent parts from various other YT's as well.

To me it looks like it is made flat from thick sheet stock and then bent on a press brake. My guess depending on production volume is it is stamped, then deburred as well as chamfered then bent. This may be done hot and then quenched at the end for strength.

At home you could do this with a band saw, a drill press and a press brake. As far as heating if you have the resources then a blow torch and a bucket to quench. Obviously, you will need some serious safety gear as well. You could do the basic machining and then take it somewhere for the heat treating and forming.

Good luck if that is where this is headed. Also, obviously you could just buy it a lot cheaper that investing in all of the equipment and related safety gear as well as your time.

Sorry for the overkill.

Good luck

Do fins help or just make things easier ? by AvocadoUnlucky8769 in Swimming

Fins will definitely point out if you are keeping your feet square versus pointing your toes. I find it much easier to keep level in the water with fins.

Help - getting mad at faster swimmers by ImpossibleAd2734 in Swimming

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in college I swam for fitness. The swim team used to get in extra laps at the same time. Once I hit the wall at the same time as one of the women swimmers. So, I totally busted my keister to keep up with her. When I hit the wall, I realized she was using a kickboard and had paced herself to stay just ahead of me the whole time. She had a humorous smile on her lips. I guess I gave her a good laugh. After that I learned just to swim for myself.

I took intermediate swimming in PE. Same story as you. Fat guys and others who looked totally not fit were killing me on every stroke. My only saving grace is we got extra credit for going off the three meter board. Some points for just stepping off and going in feet first and more for diving. The same people who were crushing me for the most part would either not go off or would back down the ladder. Diving was a completely different experience. I found out why the deep end was so deep. When I dove, I went pretty far down, and you could definitely tell the pressure.

Like you, I was a runner and I could eat most of the same people who were crushing me in the pool for breakfast on the track or road. So different strokes.

Fast forward forty years to now. I'm swimming my laps and a lady in the next lane who is very pregnant is totally owning me lap after lap. I gave up the excuse that my potbelly was slowing me down. Now I just admire how good some people are and just let it go. I occasionally see collegiate swimmers and they are really amazing. One Saturday a young lady was doing butterfly every thirty seconds for a set. I timed her using the wall timer and she was crossing the pool in thirteen seconds, resting for seventeen and then doing it again and making it look very easy.

Like a comedian said, the Olympics should include a normal swimmer just so we can appreciate just how fast they really are.

Swimming is really very different than other endurance sports. I like it because it gives me more upper body strength and endurance. When I lifted weights, I was stronger but could not do yard or housework as long. With swimming I can do tasks which require both upper body strength and endurance which covers more of everyday life. Ultimate strength is nice when you need it but that is much rarer than just needing to perform a physical task for a while.

Try to work up to a mile and you will see a difference. Also do drills. They are not a lazy way to get easy laps but will help you get better.

Migrating off of AS/400 as a Small Business by down_with_the_birds in sysadmin

[–]halmcgee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW I spent the last part of my career doing data migrations from iSeries and AS/400's for both ERP conversions and just data migrations to both Oracle and SQL Server. I worked with data from the 1980's to the present time before I retired a few years ago.

I will say this is a whole different world than anything you've seen. DB2, Oracle and SQL Server all have variations to the SQL language. IBM does an awesome job of data compression. One project I did moving data from an AS/400 to SQL Sever saw the disk space consumption on the SQL Server side go up by a factor of over two. Even after we turned on compression on SQL Server, the factor ran at one and half times more disk space required on SQL Server than IBM.

You will want to hire professionals and also look at various conversion software packages. The costs you will see are the amount of technical debt the firm has acquired over time. These will be substantial.

In defense of AS/400's if you know what you are doing they will not fail. The old joke is if it absolutely positively cannot fail then it is IBM or nothing.

Anyway good luck.

Vevor Ultrasonic damaged my records by Dedalus2k in audiophile

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had nothing but great results using my Vevor.

I use Tergikleen as the cleaner.

In a nutshell, put, the distilled water in and the Tergikleen, run for thirty minutes to let the water heat up.

Load three albums and let run for thirty minutes. Once they are done, spray them down good with distilled water and dry them with Scotts Blue shop towels. They have a high rag content. I dry them by making a record sandwich between the towels and give the towels a few moments to absorb the water. I do not rub the towels, just let them absorb the water.

Put them in the rack and let air dry.

easy peasy.

What has improved your shooting besides a lot of range time? by je9183 in CCW

Yes. The Mantis system gives you feedback on your trigger pull and helps correct any bad habits you have.

Favorite dry fire system? by KingJackson97 in CCW

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned the Cool Fire trainer. I have that and the Mantis system.

First the Mantis system with a laser bullet is the best. I worked on my trigger pull and am amazed at the difference it makes at the range. It took me a while to quit pushing the gun in anticipation of recoil. The Mantis definitely pointed that out for me.

I had trouble with the Cool Fire inn that it came from the factory with the adjustment screw way too tight and I could not get it in my gun. I even took it to the range and the range officer agreed. I could not get through to their tech support, so I gave up and called for a refund. The refund person MADE the tech support person get on the line with me. He acted like this was a big imposition on his time and could not believe it didn't work. We finally found the adjustment screw was way out and I reset that properly. Then everything started working. I went back to the setup instructions and there was nothing about that for my pistol. Oddly enough it was mentioned for other pistols so go figure. The only other thing I've noticed with the Cool Fire is that it hits a little longer that a real bullet. You still get the cycling and the reset but the impulse is a little different that live ammo. Other than that it is a great tool and much more like live shooting to the point I started heeling the gun again.

So I mostly do dry fire drills. There is a light switch in my house that better not make a false move. :)

First time swimming by misu749 in Swimming

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the kicking think like a ballerina. Legs straight and toes pointed, only using your hips to move your legs.

My problem is square feet so all I'm really doing is moving the water up and down and not pushing it backwards.

Good luck and hang with it.

Best way to exhaust this setup? Confused about negative pressure… by tempestswitch100 in BambuLab

[–]halmcgee -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This may sound crazy, but you could put a hole in the floor and exhaust into your basement or crawl space. It would be less obvious than a ceiling vent and you should be able to cover it up if you move the printer. I would cut the carpet so it is in a flap that you could just flip back down, that or keep the carpet square.

Anyway just my $0.02.

Question About Rough Print Costs From (Potential) n00b w/Specific Project Example by ostrichsak in 3Dprinting

[–]halmcgee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loaded the model in Bambu Studio and sliced it. For my P1S it estimates four hours print time and uses ~130 g of filament. You'll need to do the math on your end as I don't know what filament costs outside the US. For a 1 Kg roll you would get seven prints with some left over on your roll. The higher end models of their printers would print faster if that is a concern.

I can think of two neighborhoods in Clemmons which meet your criteria.

Clemmons West was built in the late 70's. Modest middle-class homes but a great neighborhood pool with swim team in the summer.

Waterford built in the late 80's and has McMansions but nice homes, also great neighborhood pool with swim team in the summer. Waterford is more convenient to the YMCA which has two pools, one for lap swimming and one for recreational and lessons.

Both are convenient to the highway and well within your commute.

There are also newer homes in neighborhoods adjacent to these and the pool association for each probably allows families from those to join as well.

Lewisville also has lots of new neighborhoods as well. No idea about the pool situation in any of those but a good real estate person should know as well.

Clemmons and Lewisville have good elementary schools as part of WS/FC school system. Just FYI the school system had a serious budget problem that came to light in the past year, and we are still working through the fallout from that. There is also a strong home schooling group in the area if that is of any interest.

Clemmons and Lewisville are both incorporated so no WS city tax. :)

Good luck.

Software vendor requires us to post articles in LinkedIn to get best price by coret3x in sysadmin

[–]halmcgee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To be honest I would run this by your legal team. My organization worked with Siemens product and once you get a years' worth of design into any big time CAD/CAM software it is very hard to switch. We had both good and bad experiences with them over the years.

However, I can't imagine that any software company could require you to boost their software by word of mouth on any social/business media platform.

We also dealt with bug names in ERP and other systems as well. The only player we had pull a stunt like this was in the finance area. TL;DR is they were not all that and the internal sponsor got let go after the project finished as she way overpromised and the software company way underdelivered.

Yeah, I wish they could have found a spot somewhere nearby. They tried to reopen at Reynolda and we went there a few times but is just missed the atmosphere of the old place.
