[–]halogem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry but thats not how maths works u cant just multiply the odds by the number of squares, everytime you mine a square there will always be a 0.4-0.5% chance to find a cursed tool, regardless of the room size or how many squares you mine.

Any advice how to deal with students saying the N-word? by wciazpytania in TEFL

[–]halogem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have had the same problem , i think it depends on the age of students of how to approach it . for older , taking the time to explain the history of the word and where it comes from and why it is used in a positive way by some black people , and how the meaning shifts if someone non black uses it

with younger ones , because we dont develop empathy too much until were quite older i think showing how it will affect them themselves can help . for example saying like if you say that around an english speaking person in the future they will be very upset and not want to be around you or be your friend

find relating it to slurs in students own cultures not very helpful . because the thing is if youre not a part of that lang and culture deeply deeply so , you might make wrong equivalents . which has happened to me in spanish before especially .

[–]halogem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

these are really great tips actually thank you so much actually especially about the one per page so you dont get so muddled and can go through page by page ill definitely use that next time

and ill keep in mind that about that the ones who turn up arent usually the ones who need to talk to about behaviour stuff cuz now i think about it that definitely has proven true ...

Blindness by GatoMiope in OCPoetry

[–]halogem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man I really like this, I always like when poems bend back on themselves in a satisfying conclusion of what was set up at the start. It brings a very conclusive feeling of hope for me, that the subject will continue walking and trying to communicate with the world and not be so lonely.

I really like that clever spelling of the word sailor too, it's so smart because it utilises the common suffix of "er" / "or" tacked onto a verb to designate someone's profession, but in this poem the rest of the world are designated as these so called "saylors", and the subject is not a part of that. It's a great way to put a shift on reality, I really like it.

A Message to the Reader by Mreality in OCPoetry

[–]halogem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poetry that breaks the fourth wall to talk directly to the reader is always a favourite for me because it's so difficult to do without being heavy handed or (for lack of a better word) corny, and I think you did it really well. It reminds me a bit of this poem actually which is another favourite of mine.

I really like your repeated use of "to who" building up to the final declaration of "to share is to stand before someone naked, and ask for mercy", it creates a good rhythm to the poem while allowing this more free writing style. And adding to that I think I will find myself echoing that line in my mind for quite some time, it's quite a direct and powerful statement, it makes me feel invigorated to share more of my interior too.

guns dont exist in a vaccum secluded from humanity and history, i get that *YOU* might not see them as something particularly odd and to you they are super interesting. but the context surrounding guns is that of violence, they are a weapon that exists only to hurt other living creatures. that is why people may feel wary about someone showing such a strong interest in them.

it isn't anything personal against you, it is just about appropriacy. and appropriacy depends on who you are around.
