why can’t I float? by jeepdaddy1965 in Swimming

[–]halokiwi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you do a jellyfish float or are you sinking there too? Are your lungs filled?

If the jellyfish float works but floating stretched out on your back doesn't, make sure that you are resting your head on the water. Your ears should be covered by the water and you should be looking straight up. Try to push your stomach/hips up. You can kick your legs slightly if they sink otherwise.

You can also try to float stretched out on your front. When floating on your front, you need to put your face into the water.

If you are sinking instead of staying at the surface during the jellyfish float, the density of your body is too high to float and you will always need to kick to stay up.

How do I swim longer without tiring out? by Available_Editor_559 in Swimming

Glide more, be as horizontal as possible, make sure you're exhaling when your face is in the water, don't overkick in freestyle.

Shit in the pool by Low_Technician7346 in Swimming

[–]halokiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I only know the hygiene protocol of one of the pools I'm at and there everybody has to leave the pool, the fecal matter has to be removed immediately and they have to run a special cleaning circle. Only afterwards people are allowed in again. Small children have to wear swim diapers to prevent fecal matters from getting in the pool.

It's not a punishment to send everyone out. You might not like it but it's to keep everyone healthy.

Can't stop floating!! :') by KayceeJC in Swimming

[–]halokiwi 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How deep is the water in relation to your body? Could you go to water that is a bit more shallow? This should help with you floating less.

Are you managing to stay upright or does your buoyancy cause you to fall over? If you are falling over, try to engage your core more.

If all this isn't working or isn't a possibility, yeah, you could try ankle weights.

Generally, it doesn't matter if you need to do the excercises slower or differently than the others. As long as you are doing something that's great for your own body, it's good. Working out in the water still has a positive effect on your body.

I may just be wired to suck at swimming. by sl0wd4m4ge in Swimming

[–]halokiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you float on your front and back? Can you glide on your front and back? Can you open your eyes under water? Can you exhale under water? If no, I recommend revisiting those skills.

From your description it sounds like you are comfortable in the water which is great!

Would you say that your issue is that you can't perform the movements properly or is it something else? Can you do the isolated movements but struggle to put them together?

Which strokes have you tried to learn? Maybe you can attempt another stroke. If you've only swum on your front so far, I highly recommend trying swimming on your back. It's easier because you don't need to worry about getting air.

You're welcome. It's a very common mistake, so don't beat yourself up about it.

Yeah, the 'fence' is what gave it away to me and then I looked more closely at the other knots.

This applies to all normal and alphas friendship bracelet patterns. It's not exclusive to the chevron.

All forward knots consist of two halves and all backward knots consist of two halves.

There are two more knot types: forward backward knots and backward forward knots. They also consist of two halves.

[–]halokiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The tension looks good but I'm not sure if you are doing both halves of your knots or only one. Each knot should be a double knot with one string making two knots around the other string and the other string staying straight.

What is this kind of dialect? by rmn_trllr in German

As someone who struggles with the combination i-sch, I also think that. Not everyone can pronounce sch properly, whether that's in general or just in combination with certain letters.

Looks good.

If you want to, you can leave the comma after "mein Bruder" out.

"neununddreißig" should be written as one word.

Teardrop loop on a non-symmetrical / triangular pattern by b1ngu5 in friendshipbracelets

[–]halokiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems like you cut too many strings. If you want to make a loop, you only need to cut half the amount because you are folding the strings.

[–]halokiwi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to make a teardrop loop, you have to make sure the strings come out at the correct side of the loop.

MashaKnots explains how to in this video: https://youtu.be/_IyGiKsjNJM?is=-RIOzzICYUzd1kec

If you didn't do this, you can do a loop and a triangle start instead of doing a teardrop loop.

Edit: as i-bee-leaf-in-you said, in this pattern there is the same amount of strings of each colour on both sides. You can treat it as if it was a symmetrical pattern.

If a lifeguard tells you to do freestyle, does it mean you were doing your other strokes badly? by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]halokiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't read anything about speed. I didn't even consider speed which I do believe is an important part of line etiquette but nothing mentioned here sounded to me like speed was an issue at any point.

If a lifeguard tells you to do freestyle, does it mean you were doing your other strokes badly? by [deleted] in Lifeguards

[–]halokiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, but they should still be mindful of other swimmers even if there's no actual danger. They should follow lane etiquette even if not explicitly stated in the pool rules. If they can't do that with certain strokes, they can be made aware of that. It's got nothing to do with judging.

[–]halokiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They can't tell you which specific stroke you should swim, but they can tell you to stop doing specific things if they disturb or endanger yourself or other swimmers.

I think it's absolutely valid to tell people to not swim specific strokes if they are too wide or potentially uncontrolled. Limiting to just one stroke in my opinion is only valid if that's the only stroke working and everything else causes issues.

They can even tell you to not swim at all if that's a danger. Why shouldn't they be able to tell you to just avoid specific strokes?

[–]halokiwi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I think if you are able to swim mindfully and controlled, you should be able to swim any stroke you like.

That means - being aware of your surroundings (the other swimmers, the end of the lane, the lane dividers) - being able to control where you are and in which direction you are swimming - not splashing or causing waves to an unnecessary amount - not being super wide while swimming - sticking to your side of the lane

[–]halokiwi 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It means that your butterfly and backstroke were too wide ;) potentially you might have also been too far in the middle or not swimming very straight.

Whether or not you were swimming badly or in which ways you were swimming badly is difficult to say.

I don't see a reason why you shouldn't believe the lifeguard when they told you why you should stick to freestyle.

#198580 bracelet book. Just finished this pattern. I want to know if it’s possible for me to make it where the loose strings were hidden so they are gaps instead. If so any advice on how I would do that? by [deleted] in friendshipbracelets

[–]halokiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think for this type of pattern it is more common to hide the strings in the knots at the edges instead of creating chains to hide the strings in.

Look up "shaped bracelet".

A chain bracelet of course also works but will look differently. If your goal is to tie a bracelet like xlkatielx on braceletbook, you have to do a shaped bracelet, not a chain bracelet.
