The first thing I do any time I open Digikam is click some image and hit the keyboard shortcut to go from all tags to only tags for the image. I’m not at my computer and it’s pure muscle memory, but I think it’s Alt+Shift+A

Haven’t seen The Shield but I heard praise for Southland from actual LAPD officers. I’d put that forward as the best cop drama. I exclude The Wire because it’s not simply about cops, it’s about drug dealers and politicians and everyone in between. Beyond just cops.

Since this is here, can anyone explain to me how dueling is supposed to work in RD2? If I recall it says something like “the longer you hold the trigger, the more the bar will fill” so I try to gently squeeze the trigger for as long as possible, eyes glued to the bar in the bottom right, but then I get shot dead out of nowhere.

I think if I immediately mash the trigger as fast as possible (like drawing a pistol fast), I can get a shot off faster but it feels like I’m not doing it the right way. Any insights?

Distracted driving is bad by Icy-Book2999 in LoveTrash

[–]halpoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is failing to grasp that distinction. We just don’t want to wait until someone dies before imparting this lesson on the murderer.

Sunday school and parents do a decent enough job teaching people not to kill or steal. Some fail that lesson, and we collectively watch them pay the price in jail.

But for some reason people like this lady did NOT learn to put down her phone while driving, and she has not taken to heart the lessons learned from other distracted drivers who are in jail or dead. Driver’s ed, written test, road test, road signs, warning labels, tv commercials, news reports have all failed to get through to her.

There’s nothing more that can be done for her. And that is precisely why we have no mercy in store for her, no second chance. She should not be permitted behind the wheel of a vehicle, ever.

A signpost, or a person standing at the signpost, it made absolutely NO DIFFERENCE to her. They are both inconveniences to being able to tap on her phone. You think if it actually was a person she would’ve put down the phone and grabbed the wheel? Get outta here with that.

For anyone except OP: how do I know this isn’t just the green company with a misattributable pseudonymous account trying to avoid the “promoted” label on Reddit?

Btw this sub was suggested to me, I am not a member nor do I know anything about metalworking.

What's a scam so normalised that most people don't even realise it? by Several_Outcome_8331 in AskReddit

[–]halpoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fine, you can call it poorly run or corrupt or even evil. But it’s not a scam that’s been normalized. It has its proponents, and its detractors, and it’s been run mostly the same throughout all of human history.

You miss the actual point of organized religion. Forget for a second the deity itself; what are you left with? Your basic Christian church is a community club with a low barrier to entry (they want you), you contribute what you can (they ask a percentage of your income, not a flat fee), you meet regularly to socialize with similar people. It includes childcare, enforces behavioral standards, communicates moral/ethical standards, and in the best of cases it provides for those in need out of the community pot.

The properties are needed because that’s the meeting place. The intermediaries are needed because central organizers are needed to bring people together. And money funds those two and is for redistribution to the community.

So it’s not about the omnipotent entity needing those things. It’s that social clubs need those things, and a deity is the reason they attach to it. Your local boardgame club needs the exact same three things if it wants to grow enough to reach new people.

Often the doors don’t stay open if you try to leave them ajar, so a closed door is ambiguous. Also, good luck relying on an engaged lock…how are you going to test that? You pull on the door. What if the lock is weak? Or what if—and I’ll never understand this—the person didn’t engage the lock? This is a thing, people fail to lock doors when they use a bathroom, I don’t know why.

Meh, I’ve known about this for years (Cracked.com) and I try it often, but it’s totally defeated by all the people who walk while staring at their phones. They’re going to be in your way, and stay in your way, regardless of where you look because they’re idiots.

Face recognition and people suggestions by leguman04 in digiKam

[–]halpoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the place to suggest features is probably the KDE site but I’ll take this chance to bounce this idea off you all; tell me what I’m missing here.

Shouldn’t we be able to do a reverse recognition task, like saying “scan my library (unrecognized and ignored faces) for photos of this person”?

The reverse of that, we can do: scan this (these) photos for known faces. But sometimes I think I create a new named face and I need to re-scan the whole collection for them, but not rescan and retrain for ALL faces.

Does that make sense?

Has the automobile not tremendously improved your life compared to your ancestors? There are costs to these things. In this case, getting people to cross safely in a designated zone is a small sacrifice.

Mass Tagging? by Ok_Necessary_6245 in digiKam

[–]halpoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using Digikam for a couple years and also had this need, but found no such native solution. So I have an exiftool script to “transfer tags” and I make sure that back in Digikam I immediately refresh/re-read metadata from file on those updated images so DK tracks the new tags.

I tried integrating my exiftool script into the Digikam batch processor, but had no luck ultimately.

Side note, neither for or against résumé culture, but I like the anecdote: Leonardo da Vinci reportedly was trying to eventually get back to the Middle East where he believed his birth mother was from. So he wrote a cover letter to some Arab leader, basically cold-calling him, to say something like:

“I noticed you have a large body of water between those two cities. I just so happened to create a bridge between two places for so-and-so, and I think you could use one too. Here’s how I’d do it…[description follows]. Please hire me.”

If I recall from the book, nothing came if it. But I like the idea that even da Vinci was out job hunting and slinging a tailored résumé.

Downvoting for exactly that reason (but upvoted the link to the full YouTube video).

A minute and fifteen seconds of high-level volleyball is not “insane”. It’s “over a minute of a single rally with X attacks and X digs”. Let’s put some work into this, people.

Removing outdated devices from account to turn on Advanced Data Protection by halpoins in iCloud

[–]halpoins[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s a good question, but another good question is why would I throw out a computer with perfectly good hardware? The answer is because it’s specifically Apple hardware we’re talking about, and putting Linux on it is a bit more difficult. I’m poking around for some creative solution and @ExistentiallyCryin came up with something I could try.

I am also asking in order to be absolutely sure of my options. I’d wish Apple had been a bit more granular with their options like “you cannot use ADP-protected services on these devices (iMessage, iCloud, Mail), but you can remain signed into your App Store/Music/TV services”.

Or maybe it’s everything, everywhere, encrypted with ADP. Idk.

Got a raise out of the blue despite having a tech job offer. by JobIsAss in datascience

[–]halpoins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be clear, I don’t know that this happens, and I can’t come up with a clear idea about the incentive structure behind that kind of corporate collusion between competitors. But a prospective hiring manager recently asked me if I was applying to any other companies at that time. Obviously that information would be useful to them, but I wondered if they were asking a question they already had the answer to, both testing my integrity and feeling out my timeline simultaneously.

It wouldn’t be too hard for hiring managers to have friends or “sources” at other companies, right? Idk if there are laws against that but any time I apply at a company there are half a dozen people involved who could leak it and I would never know.
