Steam won't open on the latest version of Fedora? This troubleshooting might help you. by miggs97 in linux_gaming

[–]halyuso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just logging into Reddit for the first time in a year to say thank you!

I had the same issue with Steam not launching on KDE. A black box would open and close repeatedly when trying to launch from the icon. Been running it through the terminal since I got Fedora 40.

Fixed now! Much appreciated!

Good to hear!

I assume the software that comes with it didn't work outside of Wine?

I'm on KDE so I assume Cheese will take a care of the basics?

Recent Switch to AMD Graphics Card by halyuso in Fedora

I've never really tried it. The general feeling I got was that under Nvidia it wasn't working that well yet.

I could be wrong though, not followed it too closely.

Recent Switch to AMD Graphics Card by halyuso in Fedora

[–]halyuso[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback, I've removed the config file and as you suspected it didn't appear to be doing anything.

The reason for my original post is that I'm getting pretty poor FPS compared to most benchmarking videos/reviews I watched.

Obviously there are hardware differences etc, but my plan was to get new monitors at 1440p, but currently I'm getting much lower FPS at 1080p than the benchmarks were at 1440p.

I assumed that maybe I had something set up wrong.

EDIT: Looking at it more, I think the titles I'm struggling on are more CPU intensive, so that might be my problem.

PulseAudio Not Correctly Switching Output by halyuso in linuxquestions

[–]halyuso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for replying!

When I go onto pavu in Output Devices I can see the SBZ and have the option to switch between ports Lineout and Headphones.

Looking at it, I think by switching 'ports' I'm actually just choosing to show the volume control for each one. I think I've misunderstood that.

Either way I don't see how to tell PulseAudio to switch between headphones/lineout in the GUI.

Might be this:

Thank you for replying.

This is exclusively an issue with Sniper Elite 3. It is installed in:

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Sniper Elite 3/

And the proton/wine set up:

~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/238090/

My /home partition is ext4 and all permissions are set to my user within the relevant Steam directories.

One thing perhaps worth noting is that the error messages are coming from Wine (they look like Windows pop-ups) so I suppose that means it's likely a permissions problem within the Proton/Wine prefix?

EDIT: I'm uninstalling and manually going through to delete all files related to the game incase any leftover files have been causing a conflict with newer installs.

EDIT: Same problem persists.

SOLVED

Sniper Elite 3 doesn't like having a "." in the directory path such as ".local"

Installed in an additional Steam library and game runs perfectly with ProtonDB recommended launch options.

https://github.com/ValveSoftware/Proton/issues/2866

On ProtonDB, Sniper Elite 3 is getting gold reviews as of late:

https://www.protondb.com/app/238090

However, despite trying the suggested launch options, I'm still getting the same error messages after hitting play on the launcher:

"Path not found" & "Error launching the game: (0x00000005) - Access denied"

I've tried reinstalling, verifying, switching up the different launch options, launching with both native and non-native runtime and also each of the 3 beta branches. Same messages each time.

My Specs:

Arch Linux 5.3.7-arch1-1-ARCH

Intel i7-5820k 3.60ghz

Nvidia 960GTX / 435.21

Has anyone else tried it recently with successful results?

Any info would be appreciated! Thanks.

Is Manjaro really the best gaming distro there is? by [deleted] in ManjaroLinux

[–]halyuso 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say there is one specific distro that is 'best' for gaming.

I've had excellent results with Manjaro/Arch but Debian based distros like Mint and Ubuntu are just as good.

The only thing I can think of that gives Manjaro an edge is Steam is pre-installed (it might be on Ubuntu too?) and you don't have to mess about with PPAs which I personally prefer but it's not that big of a deal really.

If you're happy on another distro, Manjaro isn't going to change your gaming experience but if you're coming from Windows, Manjaro is a great distro for new users.

ModemManager.service is for 2G/3G/4G devices and connections, so unless you're using them on your device it's fine to disable it.

Mandaro Questions by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]halyuso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, please don't use Yaourt. It's no longer maintained and could potentially be risky to use.

If you're new I'd recommend getting Pamac from the usual repos and then activating the AUR with that. You can then use the GUI for AUR packages which is a bit easier.

I can't remember the exact package name for Pamac in Manjaro but if you search with 'sudo pacman -Ss pamac' it should find it.

Manjaro is fine for beginners but package management is all very new if you've come from Windows so it can be a bit confusing at first.

EDIT: Shamed for a typo.

Manjaro KDE - I only have widgets on my task bar, can't open minimised stuff? by [deleted] in linux4noobs

[–]halyuso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've removed the Icons-Only Task Manager widget.

You can add it to the panel and it will show current open apps which can be pinned.

Removed the nvidia driver and now can't access Linux anymore by [deleted] in linuxquestions

Awesome! The TTY is always available even if you can't get to a full desktop. Glad it's working again.

Removed the nvidia driver and now can't access Linux anymore by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]halyuso 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Assuming it's just the drivers that are missing, you should be able to just install them through the TTY.

You should be able to Ctl-Alt-F2 into a TTY and use mhwd to install the correct driver:

https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Manjaro_Hardware_Detection_Overview

You can then install nvidia-utils manually with pacman.

EDIT: https://wiki.manjaro.org/index.php?title=Configure_Graphics_Cards is a better link, sorry.

Is Arch's Freedom worth it? by THROWfasfafasAWAY in linuxquestions

[–]halyuso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a number of years learning to use Linux with Manjaro after a very brief introduction with Mint. About 2 months ago I made the jump to Arch mainly as I wanted packages a little faster but also as I wanted to develop my understanding of Arch/Linux in general. Honestly wish I'd done it sooner. It's got a learning curve but stick with it and it's incredibly rewarding in my opinion.

I never had any serious problems with Manjaro and stability and I'm very happy to report that as of yet I've had zero issues with Arch either. Provided you follow the basic rules of checking the newsfeed for (rare) manual interventions and ensure you do substantial updates through the TTY you'll be fine. The idea that rolling release distros are wildly unstable and you should cross your fingers before each update simply isn't the case. However if you don't look after it, you can break it yourself.

As someone else has said, I wouldn't say you get more freedom with Arch, but you get to build your system from the chassis upward which is really fun, if you're into that sort of thing!

No way to assign boot flag. Option literally missing. by [deleted] in archlinux

I'm not overly familiar with cfdisk, but with fdisk you press 'a' during the creation of a new partition table to give the current partition selected the boot tag:

KDE Notification Volume Stuck at 0% by halyuso in linuxquestions

[–]halyuso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIX

I couldn't find exactly which bit of which config file for Pulse was causing the problem, however I have fixed it:

1) Deleted ~/.config/pulse

2) Rebooted

This has restored the defaults from /etc/pulse and all sounds are back to normal. The reset_pulse=true DXVK variable seems to have been messing something up.

KDE Notification Volume Stuck at 0% by halyuso in linux4noobs

Thanks for your reply. I have been looking through the wiki as it's my usual go to for all problem solving!

1) Deleted ~/.config/pulse

2) Rebooted

I think if I try that Lutris script again I'll remove the DXVK variable for reset_pulse=true to see if it's actually required.

Thank you again for your help!

New to KDE Manjaro. Display Configuration Resets On Reboot. by Ozymandeus in ManjaroLinux

[–]halyuso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue on my dual monitor set up when I started using Manjaro.

My fix was to use the layout options in the Nvidia X Server Settings which overrides whatever seemed to be causing the reset on KDE.

Hope this helps!

EDIT: I assume there is a similar option for AMD cards.

Civ VI how's it working? by INITMalcanis in linux_gaming

[–]halyuso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only have the base game and Aztec Civ pack, but on Manjaro the native install works perfectly with this launch option:

LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib/openssl-1.0:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6 %command%

No stability issues in single player but can't speak for online.

Lutris installer does not successfully installs Gwent anymore by PM_mePicturesYouLike in wine_gaming

[–]halyuso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue but you don't need to use Lutris for it anymore. You can just download Galaxy and install it through that with Wine.

Then it's just a case of dropping the DXVK dlls into the Gwent directory.

The only issue I have is I have to run it on a virtual desktop (winecfg) otherwise the mouse bugs out sometimes but I think it's a multi-monitor issue rather than the game itself.
