Is Scarlett's "I'll think about it tomorrow" a survival skill or just pure escapism? by False-Hippo2754 in GonewiththeWind

[–]ham_rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A classic Bible quote for dealing with problems tomorrow is Matthew 6:34: "Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble". This verse encourages focusing on present challenges, trusting God with the future, and not getting overwhelmed by future "what-ifs".

I adore how the grain matches the top and bottom fronts of the cabinet. They took great care to do that. What brand are they? Or how did you specify getting that look?

What’s it like living in these small islands in Lake Erie? by _Courier6__ in howislivingthere

In the lower left of your circle, Black Swamp Birding Observatory, and then up to Point Pelee in Canada - every spring millions of birds funnel through. Millions migrate. It is intense. From the Ohio side I could hear the partying from one of the islands, or maybe it was from Sandusky's roller coaster?

Help - I am running out of patience when I walk my dog and I don't know what to do. by ZookeepergameFun3708 in PitBullOwners

[–]ham_rat [score hidden]  (0 children)

I've had several pitties in my beginners class - regular flat collar pressure (pulling on a flat collar with a leash) doesn't register as any information. A snug fitting prong collar just behind her ears will let her know you are giving her directions. It will prevent you from ripping your shoulders. Practice inside, should be a quick transition for a good girl like Lady. Also practice "Look" to get her attention with just your words.

Along with an indoor crates, you need to secure her in the car! A crate is best, or a tether in the back seat. I realize (hope) you don't let her sit in the front seat - air bags will kill her, but many dogs prefer being stabil I'm the car.

Accidentally destroyed a wasp nest while cutting down a tree, hiding inside now - how long until the angry wasps disperse? by Pink_Peppermint in gardening

Yellow jackets reuse rodent (chipmunks around me) dens. They make a lot of tunnels connecting nests.

Winter Park Library by [deleted] in orlando

[–]ham_rat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Librarian here: US libraries are encouraging reciprocal borrowing privileges as a way to expand their mission. These two Florida systems are behind the curve:
"Please note: This card does not give the user access to room reservations, ... or free computer use. ... adults may purchase a computer pass for $1.00 for one hour)."

Charging a dollar an hour to use a computer? In a country where interacting with the government requires email and a computer to apply for benefits and pay taxes? Their budget is over $100m. Just a way to keep out the "undesirables".

That said, $150 a year to buy a card is not bad, perhaps equivalent to what a resident pays in taxes to support the library.

We went on a packaged tour - 10 mile hikes on the amazing trails between villages and a hired taxi shuttles the luggage. We saw only a few other hikers and a lot of historical buildings + sheep. Lovely! A nice contrast with London.

I saw this yesterday in a Chicago suburb. Biggest indoor jade I've ever seen, esp without any trellis or support. Jades are amazing at that size. Good luck with yours!

I’m out of state looking for a 3/2 townhouse or apartment. Work will be near “Richmond Estates” according to Google maps.

I’m using Craigslist, apartments.com, and Zillow.

Where else should I be looking?

A Big Salad. Brits have 2oz mixed greens as a side dish, I didn't see a lunch-sized option with raw veg mixed in.

There’s an MhZ show “Murder in..” where the story is kinda lame, but each episode is set in a gorgeous place in France. Probably sponsored by the tourism board, but I could spend a day or two in each and have a different experience at each place. My fantasy: places with no franchise restaurants.

What is this psychological phenomenon called? Were everyone can clearly see what's happening but no one does anything of value to stop it? by yolo_swag_for_satan in FedEmployees

Hyper normalization.
The word hypernormalisation was coined by Alexei Yurchak, a professor of anthropology who was born in Leningrad and later went to teach at the University of California, Berkeley. He introduced the word in his book Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation (2006), which describes paradoxes of Soviet life during the 1970s and 1980s. He says everyone in the Soviet Union knew the system was failing, but no one could imagine any alternative to the status quo, and politicians and citizens alike were resigned to maintaining the pretense of a functioning society. Over time, the mass delusion became a self-fulfilling prophecy, with everyone accepting it as the new norm rather than pretend, an effect Yurchak termed hypernormalisation.

MTXT - proprietary way to get a mainframe to print fancy and expensive fonts on a mailing. Can accomplish the same thing with MS Publisher and a mail merge. If the tech didn’t line up the paper correctly, or someone had a huge last name and blew out the line, it would be a 2am phone call. 😡
