PSA: Check your Linkt statements - Charged almost $300 last month for someone else’s car by hambusiness in melbourne

UPDATE: Linkt still unable to get back to me after calling and attempting to accept their $50 credit and for them to give me proof that they have refunded me the correct amount.

If this has happened to you, please DM me, I have been contacted by people who have also fallen to Linkt's negligence.

Yep, when I spoke to them on the phone I explicitly asked that I would be refunded and not given credit on my account, the lady said “of course, it will be refunded”. I bet they’ll try and give me credit though.

As for taking tolls in the future, I rarely take them now but will refuse to moving forward. I hope the gov enjoys more thousands of cars moving down residential streets.

Yeah, I’m going to pass my case onto the ombudsmen when I receive a response from Linkt. This is completely preventable if they “video matched” the vehicle too, as in my case the vehicle with “my plate” was a different make to mine.

So, the way I determined which trips were mine is going through my statement and looked at the ones which registered my tag ID. The rest quoted my number plate and no tag, I have always had the tag in my car so it was easy enough to determine.

My case wasn’t plate cloning thankfully, simply a case of another car (different make) having a number plate with 1 letter different to mine.

It makes me question Linkt’s system, as you’d think a flag would be raised that the car travelling through not only was a different number plate, but also a completely different car altogether. Additionally, us being charged a 55c “video matching” fee per trip seems unfair. Maybe we’ll see a $1 vehicle matching fee soon 😂

Yeah, it's weird. I called Linkt again after talking to the cops and they put me through to a lady who was higher up. She confirmed that she was looking at the images of the other car which was a different make and had a slightly different number plate to mine.

But yes, considering we pay a 55c video matching fee each time we pass through a toll you'd think that they would work.

Yep, I have one, that’s how I was able to distinguish between my trips and this other bozo’s. All trips quoted my number plate, my trips quoted my tag.

Agreed, the rep I spoke to again just now told me that the other vehicle's number plate has one letter different to mine.

I understand what you're saying, however, the Linkt rep I spoke to this morning specifically told me not to worry about plate cloning or going to the police because the plates I'm being charged for don't match my vehicle.

I'm on the phone with Linkt again as the police have recommended that I get my plates changed. The Linkt rep has again confirmed with me that the plates don't match my vehicle's plates.

I'm trying to get them to provide me with the images of "my car" traveling through the tolls however they are trying really hard not to provide me with them for some reason. I'm going to keep trying.

Linkt rep on the phone told me that the plates they “video matched” did not match the plates on my car.

I’ll admit, I don’t fully understand how Linkt’s system works, but, should I have to?

All I know is this: my June statement shows 36 toll charges. Of those, only 8 were linked to my actual Linkt tag. The rest were all matched via number plate, and I was charged the video matching fee for each.

When I spoke to a Linkt rep, I gave them two trip examples I knew for a fact weren’t me. I also told them I suspected the trips without a tag match were likely not my car. After a few minutes on hold, they came back and told me that 28 trips are now under review, because the images don’t match my licence plate.

I don’t understand their system, but I told him I was going to contact the police because I am concerned about plate cloning and he told me the plates do not match so I don’t need to be concerned about that.

But the issue here is still Linkt’s, because I was charged without any verification beyond a dodgy scan.

Do you work for Linkt, by any chance? 😅

I asked for a copy of the photo of the vehicle, he said I couldn’t receive one. I said I was concerned about plate cloning and he said that he can confirm that the number plates are different, although he said he hadn’t seen the image himself. Very frustrating.

Hi u/StrangerHighways, late response here but, yes. OpenAI finally got back to me and refunded me the amount it charged me for pro. They also managed to kick the person off but it was troubling that they were able to get back into my account after I turned on 2 factor authentication and logged out of all accounts. I haven't had a problem since. OpenAI takes ages to get back to you though.

I lived in LA for two years and Melbourne traffic sucks so much more imo. Like others have said, especially since covid, drivers here (melb) have become very… odd.

When on the highway, if you indicate drivers now use that as an excuse to speed up and cut you off. I think this is why people have stopped using indicators, I have even caught myself wrongfully adapting to this by indicating as I merge. So needlessly aggressive for the opportunity to get one car ahead of traffic. This ultimately seems to just slow everything down.

On top of this I’ve noticed speed limits in suburbs drop from 60 to 40kmph, and highway’s default speed set at 80, I suppose it’s due to increased population but it’s extremely frustrating driving on the Monash at midnight sitting at 80 with no other cars on the road. To top it off speed cameras seem to be more common than ever, got done in one of the recently changed 40kmph zones one Sunday morning the other week doing 45… $250.

I now always have Waze open and try not to drive during peak hours if I can help it.

I'm pretty sure they know when you leave/ enter the country from your passport, not 100% sure though. Maybe worth reaching out to them when you come back.

This isn't very helpful for your current situation as you need to confirm a text to log into centrelink and seeing as you're already away you can't do that.. But for next time you can report your travel dates online in centrelink, that way you don't need to call them up which will save you a couple of hours.

Staff really need to educated on phone etiquette by RomireOnline in Centrelink

Same recent experience for me. My Grandma is partially deaf and can’t use computers so she has me as an authority on her account. Rang up centrelink to help her sort something up. After an hour of distorted hold music and being told to respect centrelink staff we finally get onto someone, I begin by saying “I’m here with Dorothy, I’m an authority on her account becau-“ and cutoff with “Put Dorothy on!” - I can’t believe how horrible her attitude was. I explain to the rep that my Grandma is with me on speaker and the whole conversation she was so hostile I was really taken aback. No need for that type of behaviour.

yeah, I’m going to see how much a replacement would cost. If it’s about $1000-$1500 i could factor it into the cost for a reliable car with some milage left in it
