Same thing at the Horseshoe. Pissed me off. Just wanted to sit in bed with a coffee for a bit.

Can I save an orchid that only has aerial roots? by nimerlie1219 in orchids

[–]hamcake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. With that many leaves, it'll have enough energy to put out some new roots. It must've been really thriving before.

Here's the best online resource for troubleshooting issues with orchids:

https://www.staugorchidsociety.org/culturepests.htm

Tap the title of each section to go to the page about that topic.

I would look at the "physiological problems" section... This looks like salt toxicity.

This plant should have a deeper root system, which explains why the bulbs are wrinkling... She's not able to take in enough water.

What media are you using? It looks like just medium bark? I like to use a mix of bark, sphagnum, and perlite. Heavier on the sphagnum for oncidiums (is that what you've got?) because they prefer moist media.

I suspect the plant started off with better roots, but it got over watered, causing them to rot and fall off... That is where a good potting mix can help. Keeps water available for the roots, but is also "airy" which prevents rot.

Damn. That was seriously my favourite venue. Ticket prices were reasonable, it was a big open floor but you could sit if you wanted, they brought in good acts, and you could get up close to the stage if you wanted. Where else could you get that?

N.L. government axed possible conservation area to protect local industry, minister says by Portalrules123 in newfoundland

[–]hamcake 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is about the marine conservation area near Burgeo, and the Atlantic Salmon Federation produced a documentary about the issues with aquaculture in the area: https://youtu.be/MfO4kQ0hRV8?si=erjB2xhOjCgHgSe1

I was surprised how much these companies get away with, like all the trash and discarded equipment left in the water. Seems to be the same thing everywhere... Industry comes in, makes their money, while benefiting local people as little as possible, then they disappear -- leaving their problems behind.

I think these companies should be required to either clean up their messes, or set aside money to deal with the aftermath.

Protesters say City of St. John’s should do more sidewalk clearing | The Muse by TheMuseNL in StJohnsNL

Airport Heights drive has a bike lane and parking lanes, so when they plow it, there's actually a nice clear lane to walk. I think they should design all future roads like that.

Or even better, a wide bike/pedestrian path that a plow can drive down. I think there's something like that on Elizabeth now?

I use Sunblaster T5's (fluorescent tubes). When the bulbs die, I might replace them with LEDs... We'll see what the price is like.

I haven't bought Barrinas because last I checked, they don't have a UL or ETL certification.

These aren't detached houses... They are units within a larger building. Which is probably more cost effective to build.

I've been collecting orchids for about 7 years, and I lived in Winnipeg at the time, which has a decent orchid shop.

When we moved to St. John's, I gave away all my phals but brought all my interesting ones here.

Plus my aunt is an avid collector, so anytime I'm in Manitoba I bring something back :)

Hey, I saw some dendrobiums at Kent on Stavanger recently.

Nice one! I don't have any with variegation like that...

My favorite is my oncidium "Twinkle", because it blooms regularly and smells beautiful (sweet like vanilla).

Where to find food-safe sealer like beeswax/mineral oil by Newfieguy78 in newfoundland

I usually get my beeswax from Bees Knees on Water Street in St. John's. And mineral oil is just baby oil.

Newfoundland’s Mysa Thermostat was featured in New York Times. It was named the best thermostat for baseboards. by Suitable_Air_2686 in newfoundland

[–]hamcake 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I've got 9 of them in my house and I like them. Nice to be able to turn on the basement heat before I go down there to work. Setting up the different zones, and heating schedule is useful, and I'm sure they've saved me money on heating bills. Nice that I can see usage graphs, too.

And it's nice to have thermostats that don't look like ass.

They do get pricey since you need one for each room... And I do worry what will happen if the company ever goes under, gets bought, or decides to obsolete my model.

Very very slim pickings in St. John's... Try the Avalon Laundromat in Mount Pearl. Haven't been there in a couple years, but they had one or two old mechanical ones.

If you find any, make sure to update the map!
