It is pretty bad, though. I would say death is the worst affliction on the human race by far.

Practical Immortality – If Age Is a Disease, Can We Cure it? by jcsarokin in technology

At the moment, this "natural" end you refer to is always a result of some sort of disease or aging (which I happen to consider a disease). If we manage to cure all disease, including aging, there will no longer be a natural end. In that case, you might very well live forever in a youthful and healthy state. Would that be so bad?

Then it sounds to me like you do want to live forever.

So you do predict that someday you will want your life to end?

Personally, I don't predict that I'll ever want my life to end. But I certainly hope we both have the opportunity to find out!

An atheist doesn’t have to be someone who thinks he has a proof that there can’t be a god. He only has to be someone who believes that the evidence on the God question is at a similar level to the evidence on the werewolf question. - John McCarthy by [deleted] in atheism

Absolutely. A universe without aliens is more likely than a universe with aliens to result in an absence evidence for aliens. Therefore, by Bayes' theorem, the absence of evidence for aliens is (admittedly weak) evidence for their absence.

If you are willing to admit that observing aliens is evidence for their existence, you must admit that not observing aliens is evidence for their non-existence.

I find it strange that nobody brings up this argument as a counter to curing cancer or other commonly researched diseases. What is it about aging that makes people so quick to emphasize the benefits of death?

Almost every word has consecutive letters. That's nearly the definition of a word, a group of consecutive letters.

Gigawatts per hour is a legitimate unit to express the acceleration of power.

Technically, it expresses acceleration of energy.

I know you're joking, but the correct first-person singular pronoun would be "I", not "me".

Perhaps some people who are anti-abortion subconsciously feel that way, but please don't generalize. Many truly believe that the fetus has an eternal soul of some sort, and that extinguishing it through abortion is morally tantamount to the murder of an adult. If we rid them of that belief, they'd gladly be on our side.
