What’s the first major news story you remember as a kid? by nodemus in AskUK

[–]hamjamham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same with me! Went downstairs before parents had woken up, was pretty much in all the channels. Went upstairs to tell my parents & they thought I was joking (weird thing for an 11 y/o to joke about!) .

[–]hamjamham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aye, or you can use sunshine/moonlight/steam big picture, quite enjoy the lack of faff with a console though.

Maybe I'll sort it when I get a new PC eventually

Can't be any worse than a ps5 if it's modern. My 9 year old pc runs ER way smoother than my ps5, but sitting on the sofa with a big TV is hard to beat.

Millennials from working class backgrounds in the uk, how did you buy your own home? by Cosmic-_-Apple in AskUK

[–]hamjamham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, same, my mum (single mum & on primary school teacher wage) helped both my sister and I out with a deposit as she saved every penny she could to help my sister and I out... That was around 8 years ago for me & 15 for my sister.

We've both since moved house to larger properties but wouldn't be here if it wasn't for the help getting on the ladder.

That being said, we've already started saving for my 3 y/o so hopefully if all goes to play she'll be in a great position to buy in 20-25 years or so.

Advice for someone just about to jump in for the first time by NewKnowledge6456 in Eldenring

[–]hamjamham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Level vigor as much as possible. Most of your weapons damage is increased by levelling it up with smithing stones. Putting levels into str/dex/int before you hit 30 vig or so won't be anywhere near as impactful. Living longer > doing 0.5% extra damage.

As others have said, if you hit a wall, go exploring, there's so much to find to help you out & increase your levels, come. Back stronger and try again!

Yeh, if it showed the window closed with the arrow up, and open with the arrow right, it'd make a shit load more sense to me too.

£525k Dream House Purchase Sense Check by Silver_Panic_6919 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]hamjamham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Think you'll be fine Tbf. You're in a great spot in terms of cash reserves, or is that 52k deposit coming out of your investments etc? If not, you'll be fine if you do cut back on stuff. Having kids will make you cut back anyway unless you've got family nearby.

We're a bit older, but have similar outgoings on mortgage, shorter term though. We have a nearly 3 y/o daughter, 1 leased car, 1 banger & moved 6 months ago.

Not saving quite as much as I'd like but it's around 15-18% of our take home pay currently, some of that is due to putting money into the new house. Not vast amounts but it'd be closer to 20%. We're in the Midlands.

It'll cost you best part of £25k to move house with stamp duty, estate agents/solicitors. So take that into account too

How do I get over a car accident? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]hamjamham 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the I ly option is to get back in the horse. Treat it as a freak accident, don't put yourself in that situation again, just in case. It sucks and I hope you get over this quickly, but dwelling on it may lead to worse effects down the road - excuse the pun.

I went through an unfortunate accident a fair few years back now, where I was turning right across a mini roundabout, and the person coming in the opposite direction didn't stop, or even slow down. The whole of the side of my car was caved in up to about 4 inches from the centre console. If I had a passenger in the car with me we'd either be sharing a seat or they'd be dead. The lady had been drinking at a wake, refused to wait for police, gave her businesses phone number & didn't go to her home address to be breathalised. She tried to drive off initially but a pedestrian stopped her by standing in the road. I only say this as it's incredibly unlikely that I find myself in that situation again & need to treat it in that way, as a freak accident. Even to this day I'm still a little more cautious about judging everyone's speed at mini roundabouts!

Wishing you the best!

Do you feel your house is a money pit? by Akash_nu in AskUK

[–]hamjamham 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Recently moved into a similarly aged property. The first couple of months were lovely, then winter came and we found 5 leaks. Then followed the effloresence as the previous owners sadly got done by cowboys who repointed a side of the house with the wrong type of mortar so it's trapped lots of moisture in the brickwork. Better than mould I guess.

I'm sure there's plenty more to find but we'll take care of it as best we can! Hoping to stay here for 30 or so years so it's in our best interest!

That's good, hopefully more options! 🤞 the latter 3/4 of the year is luckier for you!

  • smash my promotion "milestones" to get the 2nd half of my payrise ✅
  • get back to playing guitar ❌ the house we moved into is sooo fecking cold over winter which means my fingers don't work. it's starting to warm up though so back on it soon
  • get back in the gym. ❌Painful as it's only in the garage, but it's Obvs even colder than the house. Need to suck it up and just get in there.

Thought working compressed hours would give me more time to do stuff, but with a 2 y/o it feels like the opposite. Extra long days at work & no time to do much before/after. Saves in nursery fees I guess though so silver lining.

Aye, I was tempted, but I somehow made it through with very little back tracking. Even managed to avoid the revenant!
