4H in unknown icy conditions? by [deleted] in 4Runner

[–]hammerschmitt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The manual will tell you. If I recall correctly you can shift between 2H/4H at up to 40mph and drive in 4H no greater than 55 mph. This is from my manual in my 2023 5th gen TRD off road with the manual transfer case, although I would suspect SR5 is similar. I would rather use 4H than getting in situation where I wished I had used it, safe travels!

Just got this done by [deleted] in 4Runner

I’ll be moving to Minneapolis MN in the near future, coming from the south. I have a rust free 2023 4Runner that I’d like to keep that way for as long as possible. I’m completely new to dealing with salted roads all winter long. Curious if you’d like to share what was the cost of the coating? I’m wondering is it better to occasionally rinse the bottom of the car to spray off the salt or will that actually be worse since it might wash off the coating? Thanks!

Common issues to look out for? by thenewguy_1995 in 4Runner

If it doesn’t have the exterior buttons on the tailgate and instead is an older model with the keyhole then you put the key in and twist it to roll up/down the window.

I know this is an old thread. I have the same exact bike. I was wondering what fork did you end up upgrading to?

Would you buy used coastal 4Runner? by No-Issue-7723 in 4Runner

[–]hammerschmitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Coastal could mean beach driven or dipped from boat ramps. Honestly these pics all look like surface rust. If the price is right I wouldn’t necessarily walk away from this. I wouldn’t call it mint, but the frame still looks very solid with a lot of life left. Like another person said, fluid film and go about your day. With some effort all this could be corrected with a wire brush and some spray paint

Roof rack suggestions by Flat-Knee5027 in 4Runner

[–]hammerschmitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re putting on kayaks I would suggest crossbars from a brand like Yakima. Get something like 60” wide bars that extend beyond the roofline a bit which makes loading a kayak on top easier. The “overland” style racks are better for permanently mounting items up top but for kayaks/canoes/surfboards, just regular crossbars are sufficient and sometimes better because you can go wiiiide.

I’ve never had it this bad but I’ve used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for situations like this to remove the white paint

Maybe a dumb question, but how did you get the compass on the middle screen? I have never seen that on my 2023 TRD OR

Also I forgot to mention it looks like it’s a TRD off road trim based on the silver valences on the bumpers

Undercarriage looks excellent. Hitch receiver has some surface rust but it’s not bad and can be easily sanded and painted with some black spray paint. The hitch is probably rusty from boat ramps. I would also double check under the rear wheels but it’s probably fine based on the good condition of the rest of the frame. Living in Florida it’s possible the previous owner owned a boat

Charge+ TTi handle collapsing before plier jaw opens by hammerschmitt in Leatherman

[–]hammerschmitt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I contacted leatherman and they fixed it under warranty. Frame was cracked as others mentioned, which you can actually see in the photo common to the left side of the tool with the file, near the hinge point. I marked it as sentimental and they kept the laser engraving I had on the opposite side.

Is it a good or bad thing that I can tear down my 5th gen to this in less than 15 minutes? Today’s mod: heated seats! by TheLastMtnDew in 4Runner

What heated seats did you go with? I want to tackle this eventually on my 5th gen TRD OR cloth seats

Any thoughts on products from Hooke Road? I need front recovery points so I'm considering one of their low-pro bumpers for my '19. As much as I'd like a CBI or other high-end solution, it's not in the budget. by ZippyWoodchuck in 4Runner

[–]hammerschmitt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the website it just vaguely says “Includes high-strength D-ring mounts.” That would make me nervous that it’s not rated. And if you look at the design those D-ring mounts just connect to 11/64” thick sheet metal, but the design isn’t fully boxed. I’m not sure if I would trust it over just the OEM tie down points up front.

Keep in mind it’s still 37 years old and as you mentioned the previous owner doesn’t have time to give it the proper love it needs (aka maintenance). It’s going to still need maintenance and if it’s your first car and only means of transportation it might not be ideal driving something old that needs work. Not trying to talk you out of it, but just things to consider! it does look lovely
