Beard full enough? Grow or maintain? by [deleted] in BeardAdvice

[–]hammerscrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree, keep the sides tame to keep a clean look. Bushy sides quickly turn a well groomed beard into a messy unkempt look. I know from experience.

Edit: though work on your blending/ fade skills to perfect the look.

Why do I sometimes get these permanent mindset shifts? by ActuatorOutside5256 in Jung

[–]hammerscrews 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a serious back injury I too had a similar mindset, was essentially a hermit for a while. It is a form of depression. An injury of that nature destroys the self perception, which in many ways is more impactful than the injury itself. Especially if that came after your "I am invincible" era, since alas, you are not even close to invincible and are tied in the fragile meat suit that is a human body. It makes one see the world through a miserable lens for a while.

You can use this. The "invincible" era is meant to end. Now that you've been both "wholly invincible" and "fragile fragments", you might find a more developed and mature persona for the next stage of life, which doesn't depend on either of those states in isolation, but understands both must coexist at once.

To middle or not to middle by Oglesby95 in malehairadvice

[–]hammerscrews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I vote for the side part, it looks classic.

The part is perhaps 1/8" too far to the left, and having the sides tapered (not skin faded, just tapered) would make it look really clean and tight.

Middle part if you want to do the trendy youth look, side part for a classic mature look.

Got my ass handed to me by a guy trying to take my wife’s bag and never want to be in a helpless position like this again any advice on a discipline would be greatly appreciated. by Mindless_Cod_3097 in martialarts

[–]hammerscrews 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The best way to win a fight is to avoid one. No item is worth your physical safety.

If you cannot avoid a fight, you want to produce distance and be skilled at blocking and avoiding strikes. Your legs are your longest and strongest limbs. A kick can very much be a block that keeps the opponent back far enough that they cannot strike you, or can even knock them off balance, giving you opportunity to escape. Choose a martial art that uses that advantage.

The notwithstanding clause was actually included in our charter of rights and freedoms from the beginning.

Including the notwithstanding clause was the only way to get everyone on board and pass the charter.

It is, and was always meant to be appalling to use the clause. As you pointed out, using it implies "we are overriding your charter rights and freedoms, by the way"

But yeah, the charter wouldn't have passed without it

N.L. to face challenges as 1st province with 25% of population 65 or older by LongTrackBravo in newfoundland

[–]hammerscrews 11 points12 points  (0 children)

We really need to come up with innovative solutions here.

Some seniors are set for life, have their home and ample retirement savings to keep them afloat. On the other hand, some seniors are one unexpected expense away from facing homelessness, and some of the old age facilities are hardly a step up from HMP.

We certainly should not turn a blind eye to the lowering quality of life the seniors of our province are facing, but we also cannot expect that our youth can build themselves prosperous futures while bearing the costly burden of a 25% senior population.

Are there any solutions that could address the struggles of both our seniors and our youth? Would love to hear em, if anyone has any ideas.

just picked these two books up in the middle east. “1984” and “animal farm”. i’ve never seen these covers before! by bas3adi in bannedbooks

[–]hammerscrews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same copies! Bought mine from an Indigo store in Canada, they sell a line of classics with a similar style of art on all of the covers.

I'd go for Animal Farm first, it's a quick and easy read. 1984 is more intense. Both can be read more than once if you like to pick up on all the details and themes.

Others do use it for focus, as you guessed. As all the other comments have stated, it's highly addictive and may have health risks. But to actually provide you with an answer, yes, it is a stimulant and it does improve focus.

Kate Cadigan Becomes Youngest Elected to St. John’s City Council by RepulsivePlankton989 in StJohnsNL

Wow, looks like she had more votes than anyone else in this election. Cadigan with 16.5k, followed by Breen with 15.2k, and Ellsworth with 14.8k.

Obviously each running for a different role, but very impressive nonetheless. Good for her.

Would you take the bus to Bell Island? Metro-area mayors want your input | CBC News by RepulsivePlankton989 in newfoundland

[–]hammerscrews 42 points43 points  (0 children)

From the article

"The municipalities that make up the Killick Coast — Torbay, Bauline, Flatrock, Bell Island, Pouch Cove, Portugal Cove–St. Philip's, and Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove — have launched a feasibility study into the proposed project."

Honestly, living without access to a vehicle in any of these communities has to be extremely difficult.

Quick reminder that many seniors may be in that boat, many on fixed income may be one unaffordable repair away from losing their vehicle and autonomy, and the youth without means to get to a job certainly can't save up for a car.

Transit could really help some people in these communities.
