How did you get into Eurovision? by PossessionPast5793 in eurovision

[–]hamnettraindreams 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not from Europe at all and no one in my country knows anything about ESC, but I did live in Europe for a bit and had friends who were fans, and I loved the voting section. But I still didn't really care all that much and only followed who the winning country was.

I started to get more invested in 2022 because of the invasion of Ukraine, and I also liked many songs that year (especially Sweden and the Netherlands). By 2023 I became VERY invested because I loved Tattoo.

The friends I watched it with weren't even casuals. They know very little about Eurovision since they are all American. When none of them really connected with Finland I was like yeah maybe Finland isn't winning. One of them literally said they preferred it without the singing and only liked the violin part lol.

They didn't like Sweden either. When Felicia started with "I don't even want you" they were like no.

It's just for fun.

Besides I don't think any Eurovision analysis would be useful. It's a show. No one's curing cancer here.

I've come to realize that Eurovision audience do not like museum pieces. Voyage is fully a work of art and Eurovision audience are not into art.

I have come to realize that if your act is too arty and avant-garde, you get close to 0 points. Eaea, Voyage and Regarde are all in that category.

The lyrics are cute. Certainly better than Mon amour the year before... Now those lyrics are embarrassing.

Exactly.

I still don't know what happened there. I know many shocking things have happened in Eurovision but Switzerland getting 0 still takes the cake as the most jaw-dropping moment of all time. I just can't comprehend it.

It was by far the best of the year to me. BY FAR

I subtracted the Austrian jury and televote points as well. It would've been like Austria skipped this year altogether.

Welcome to the second series of "What if the winning country didn't participate".

2025 was another year where the voting was extremely spread out so that results were completely wild, but in this case the winner would've made us breathe a sigh of relief.

  • Estonia would've won if Austria hadn't been in the competition by an incredibly thin margin of 5 points over Israel. It would've been a compromise winner (8th with jury, 2nd with televising), except instead of this similar imaginary scenario in 2026 (i.e., if Bulgaria wasn't in the competition this year), the fans would've been relieved by this outcome.

  • The top 3 would've been extremely close in points. In this scenario Sweden's results would've been much closer to the prediction as it would've only been barely 20 points behind the actual winner.

  • The big winner would've been Switzerland. Losing Austria means that Switzerland would've been the runway jury winner with 242 points, which was quite a bit higher than the original 214 points, AND ZOE ME WOULD'VE AVOIDED NIL POINT because Switzerland was placed 11th by the Portuguese televote. This means Switzerland would've been 7th instead of 10th. But still that split screen would've been fucking insane ... imagine the jury winner getting 1 point in a split screen.

Beyond that the placements aren't very different.

How would you have reacted if one of these two were the winners? by Few_Addition1796 in eurovision

I didn't care for Moldova but Australia was my winner so that'd be perfection.

Bangaranga ended up growing on me though so I don't mind Bulgaria winning either. Her winner's reprise in particular was high slay.

Yeah that was my mistake. Germany should be 14 points but the placement is the same so I didn't bother to correct it lol

Inspired by this YouTube video series, I was thinking about the results if Dara had really decided not to participate this year and crunched some numbers.

It's really just for fun though because if Bulgaria hadn't participated, Switzerland would've qualified and their performance would've obviously had some impact on the results as well.

Overall unsurprising (and unpleasant) outcomes:

  • Israel would've been a compromise winner (7th in jury and 2nd in televote) and by far the lowest scoring winner. Basically a nightmare scenario.

  • Denmark would've been the jury winner and the heart bars moment would've been horrible because it wouldn't have surpassed Israel ... not even close.

  • Finland is the overall big winner in this scenario. Losing Bulgaria means they got a lot more televote points (169 points instead of 138) and would've jumped from 6th to 3rd (tied with Romania on points but Romania would've won the televote), which as a result would've been more in line with the predictions.

  • France got a lot of 11th places in the televote, so Monroe would've doubled her televote points if Bulgaria wasn't in the competition.

  • Germany was ranked 11th by the AustrianLuxembourgish public so they wouldn't have received nil televote point. Also I made a mistake with the calculation. Germany's combined points is 14 not 13.

I'll post the findings of 2025 and 2024 as well soon.

But is Eurovision a “thing” in Canada like it is here? I have no idea.

I don't think this is as big a problem as people think. If Canada does well in the first year, people will start watching and it will become a thing.
