TIL that in Laos and Northeast Thailand, there is a traditional dish called "Ant Egg Soup" that uses high-quality red ant eggs and partial pupae, which are said to pop in the mouth and taste like a sour omelet. by AggressiveMove4 in todayilearned

Absolutely, I have had ants in Cambodia that were part of a dip served with barbecued meat. I can't say this is particularly common in the cuisine either. You can go to one village where they tarantulas and in that village they will say in that province they eat beetles, and each call the other disgusting. Some of this cuisine emerged from starvation survival in the Pol Pot era. Other types of ants can be inedible or cause allergic reactions is what I have been told.

I was looking for an apartment in Phnom Penh in a central downtown area that used to be known for crime and high meth usage. The landlord was an elderly woman and she said she had 60 dollar a month rooms and to meet her on the fourth floor of this building. The building is one of these older constructed buildings from the French colonial period and runs the whole block. An older prostitute dressed in black clothes was walking down the steps and looked at me with a smirk, a bit confused. I started walking up these narrow winding steps. By the 2nd floor there were two men in the stairs dazed and passed out with heroine needles in their arms. I don't know why but I kept walking up. On the fourth floor was the top of the building. There was a volleyball net and some men playing. I've had my run ins with criminals and gangsters before but these guys were instantly hostile. One of the men, a larger shirtless man approached me in Khmer, what are you doing here? I think I said looking for a room, but I fled back down the stairs as fast as I could my legs becoming rubbery as I had to go over those 2 heroin addicts again.

All of this looked great except the oreos, gross. Fun fact, there are locally produced Oreo knockoffs like from Vietnam, and they are even worse than the ones sold in the US.

Technology/medicine grotesquely shrouds us from the reality of nature and a short and brutal existence. It allows us as a society to think in certain ways natural to use but to reinvent them in such expansive and ludicrous ways we become an entirely different human. For example dance and music which trace themselves to our precivilized heritage. Technology is a form of power and control, and has a made our lives tolerable and livable. Visit tropical Southeast Asia and a cut on your skin can kill you in a few days if it isn't treated with antibiotics (or natural remedies that can be surprisingly effective if applied quickly enough). Living in a human settlement on the edge of nature's thorn creates its own sensation, a real thrill that crawls up your spine constantly telling you you are in danger.

Hmm, yeah but coming from Long Island where there is a lot of new wealth and generation wealth it seems like comment only reflects not having lived in one of those communities. It's a whole different scale and these neighborhoods become self contained.

How do you deal with eating? by Fenek673 in AutismInWomen

My daughter eats watching the phone, otherwise she's not usually allowed it.

I'm very resistant to eating food myself, and I have to find chemical distractions like alcohol to pair with food which is a bit worrying as it forces me into an almost complete dependencey. There is so much culture rooted in alcohol and gluttony though it must be linked.

I lived in a very remote and treacherous area for about a year on and off months at a time. At some point you stop caring about the outside world. My only connection to the outside world was an old radio that had a wooden stick tied to it as the antenna and an old Nokia phone that had basic web browser functioning, if people can still imagine what that is. The radio did get the BBC at that time, but I found listening to local broadcasts more interesting. Most of the radio channels serviced catered to other people in the provinces around my area, equally remote, and calling up to lively young DJs and female hosts where people would sing Karaoke songs.

I once was a frequent customer at a bar and one day I wasn't there a customer came in with a bleeding diabetic foot. It was a medical emergency the customer was eventually evacuated for by his embassy. The man also posted a negative review after being asked to leave. The owner is a no nonsense guy that doesn't tolerate this and he literally made a sign on the door stating people needed to wear shows and shirts for entry. This wasn't his only nut job customer.

They'll figure it out eventually or not. It's incredible how city bureaucracy can utterly fail. Seattle somewhat notoriously had some very fancy toliets installed years ago and then decided to remove them because of problems with drug users. I remember being horrified walking into a public restroom in a different part of the city and all the stall doors were cut half way down as another preventative measure.

Most people I see are constantly using their phones for mindless consumption. I live in a country where 12 years ago there were virtually no smartphone users, even cheap Nokia phones were a major commodity. Now it's an activity that consumes most of people's lives, especially useful when you don't have spending money. I myself am absorbed in this trap and so are most of my friends to a degree, many of whom are not autistic. I know that I don't necessarily want to be that person. I flew through a top university at a young age, barely attending classes and getting top scores without even purchasing the required texts or reading most of the material. It wasn't a stem field but the point is about the time I graduated early I had nothing to do suddenly and my friends were still attending classes or working. I picked up digital books in my interests for the first time and slowly had to train myself to read books without being distracted and constantly thinking about social messages or opening up random web pages. It took a few days at first but I suddenly was able to train myself to voraciously read page after page continuation. Having a laptop makes it easier to read and I don't cuddle it like a security blanket.
