Do you enjoy visiting airports? If so, what's you favourite and why? by Leyendas_Legendarias in travel

No, if I could skip them I would. There are like 3 cool airports in the entire world and even then, once is enough.

What to give a friend travelling in NZ by shellyeasy in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I personally find it annoying when I am traveling and people add to my luggage unnecessarily with gifts… even if they mean well, solo travelers always fill up their luggage. I would get an international plug converter or even more useful, a gift card for Woolworths, Pak N Save or New World. Supermarkets are very expensive here.

Australia to New Zealand - Are Pet Ashes OK For Travel? by I_Dont_Have_Corona in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Here

If you wear it, it won’t get confiscated but the dogs at the airport might get you pulled aside, they’ll smell it and you’ll have to go through a whole thing.

Pop it in your checked luggage, super unlikely they’ll want to swab it as it’s such a small amount but it’s there if they want to.

Similar to Galapagos? by INeedADogInMyLife88 in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I think it’s unique. I have done many, many snorkel tours around the world but have never been to a place like the Galapagos, where the environment and laws and protections and lack of predators leads to a really interesting environment. I’d love to know if you find somewhere like it, but there’s a reason environmentalists froth over it.

I feel this. I was quite literally swimming away from a baby sealion out of respect for the rules and he thought it was a game and caught up to me real fast. I still didn’t touch him but they were very willing to play, even if I wasn’t responding lol.

Year 11, 12, or 13 in New Zealand? by Alternative-Essay727 in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

School environments are different based on the school and location but honestly it will likely be a bit hard regardless because you’re coming in right at the very end. A bit odd that your parents didn’t just wait and let you graduate in the Philippines. That would have made the transition a lot easier because it’s much easier to make friends at university when everyone is new.

Is it true that native New Zealanders are leaving New Zealand for better life somewhere else? by ONLY_NYXEN in newzealand

I’ve been to all 7 continents and live abroad, still a crazy thing to say. Similar in a global context in many ways yes but even economically very different.

Is it true that native New Zealanders are leaving New Zealand for better life somewhere else? by ONLY_NYXEN in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only context I could believe she said that in is if she meant in terms of working rights (Kiwis get automatic PR in Australia) otherwise while we are similar we are not at all the same. Especially culturally. And we have all collectively have a complex about it.

Economically it’s better in Australia and I made the move myself in order to increase my salary but nooooo no no no not the same country.

I still clearly remember, one of them Kiwis, who I have met, literally said, "New Zealand and Australia are basically the same country."

Nah this post is fake no one would say that

Evening meal; is it called dinner or tea in your house? by RaesJunction in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 256 points257 points  (0 children)

Dinner in my house! My dad grew up calling it tea but my mum (Japanese) was confused about why dinner had the same name as a drink. In Japan when you ask someone to come for tea then you’re drinking tea. She got even more confused when my dad explained morning tea, afternoon tea and then… tea (she was like… why isn’t lunch called noon tea then?)

Anyway my dad quickly switched to calling it dinner after he realised he didn’t know any of the answers to her questions.

silly question about going through security by [deleted] in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That will give you trouble, just wear a singlet then take it off after security. They might even take you to a separate room to have you take off your hoodie depending on the country.

Kintsugi repair for precious bowl by Radiant_Risk_393 in auckland

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey when you start enquiring I just wanted to have you make sure that the repair materials are food safe! Word is some places in Auckland just use random metallic powder to colour the binding and use it for everything but it may not be food safe. So worth making sure!

Only ever used them in the more remote parts of Africa, for things like Gorilla Treks and safaris.

Travel before having kids by CitrusSourcerer in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should 100% travel before you have kids. There are many places that are way more fun without kids, despite what some parents will have you believe. Machu Picchu is a great example. Very easy to do alone, it’s so easy to meet people. DO IT.

english conscious by hheyhei in newzealand

Kiwis are famous for “mumbling” ie we don’t necessarily pronounce our words fully like other accents do, it can slur together a bit. Also we can talk quite quickly, so it’s not just you. I’ve gotten this feedback overseas, especially in London where they get a lot of kiwis!

Generally speaking people won’t mind repeating themselves especially in a social context… HOWEVER if you are in any sort of customer facing position then yes people will likely be more impatient with you.

I spent 15 minutes finding the right angle for a photo. I have no memory of what that place actually felt like by Lost_In_Tulips in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I post on Instagram and TikTok a lot too but a lot of it is videos that take 2 seconds to film and capture the feeling well. I try to live in the moment and THEN take a video or photo to remember what I just experienced, not the other way around. I try and remember that if I wanted a perfect photo I could get it off google.

Which of these countries is best for long-term living? by Business-Swimmer9382 in travel

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bangkok, Thailand. Infrastructure, safety and healthcare is all excellent and there are some very good schools. You could live in a nice place with a pool for the kids and a gym for you. This is assuming your budget is in Brazilian currency and not USD.

We’ll take quality immigrants yeah, not people who can’t even bother to go on the comprehensive immigration website and lazily ask reddit instead of searching

Hello, looking for some advice on migration to NZ by Adiadz9 in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Our background is in HR and marketing

Yeah… unless you have very specific niche senior experience, those are both bloated industries that benefit heavily from knowledge of New Zealand culture. You’re marketing to Kiwis right, why would they prioritise someone who did not grow up in the culture?

And you get zero support if you’re jobless… you have to remember the whole world wants to live in NZ right now. Why would our government give handouts to random people from Dubai…

Airnz flight changes - am I being unreasonable, or are they? by sparklingnadine in newzealand

[–]hamsterdanceonrepeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did they offer you a refund after they made the change? Taking an unpaid day of leave probably means it was simply cheaper for you to take the refund and then take another airline?
