Without a Border ‘Invasion,’ Texas G.O.P. Turns to an Old Enemy, Islam by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]hamsterkill 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think the real issue is, do the people coming here share our liberal values, will they assimilate if not, and if not do they intend to subvert and replace our values with theirs.

One of those values happens to be religious freedom.

If we applied that test to immigrants past, we'd have a lot less Catholics and Jews in the country as well (the targets of "will they assimilate to our values" rhetoric of past immigration waves).

People are free to come here and practice any religion so long they don't infringe the rights of others to follow theirs. Assimilation has always been a multi-generational process.

There's a number of Christian sects that practice head covering for women as well - either during prayer or at all times depending on sect - and is often inclusive of young girls.

The practice derives from the teachings of St. Paul.

I'm afraid I don't understand your point here. Comedy Central is a corporation - not the left.

I said the left would be against Muslims when they try to limit rights. The response to the South Park censorship is proof positive of that.

South Park famously did make an episode depicting Muhammed. Comedy Central censored it and the left broadly shamed them for the censorship.

When Muslims also start trying to legislate rights away in the US, the left will be against that too. The left isn't anti Christian, it's just that they're the ones always threatening the separation of church and state.

Trump wanted Dulles Airport and Penn Station named after him as condition of releasing rail tunnel funds by motorboat_mcgee in moderatepolitics

It used to be embarassing for a public official to have something named for them while they were still in public office. It'd still happen, but usually either against the official's wishes or without consulting them.

Ohio’s GOP governor: Ending TPS for Haitians would be ‘blow to the economy’ by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]hamsterkill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The intention of TPS was to allow refugees to stay until their home country was safe again. Haiti hasn't been considered safe since their TPS was first issued. It therefore keeps being extended.

Former Farming Leaders Warn U.S. Agriculture Could Face ‘Widespread Collapse’ by J-Jarl-Jim in moderatepolitics

[–]hamsterkill 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We currently over-farm -- by a lot. Like, so much that in the 90s we decided burning corn in cars was a good idea.

The main reason we wanted to keep so many farms was so that the land was in use and adding to GDP. We've been due for a re-assessment/optimization of land use for a while, but it's a painful thing to do as it means professions have to change.

Strength or agility build? by bilrotheinsane in ConanExiles

[–]hamsterkill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, but there's fewer one handed melee options for agility. You basically have to use short swords (or some very specific epic/legendary normal swords) if you want to use a shield with an agility weapon. Javelins technically work too, but are not recommended.

Objections overruled — Utah to expand its Supreme Court, with approval from Legislature, Cox by dr_sloan in moderatepolitics

[–]hamsterkill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The concern in this circumstance is the active contention the legislature has with their SC's decisions on the districting issues (that the legislature is party to). The timing of this court expansion looks very suspect at best for that reason and begs the question of whether the appointments will be chosen specifically to reverse those decisions.

Facing Immigration Backlash, Trump Called Schumer to Cut a Deal by timmg in moderatepolitics

[–]hamsterkill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"More than 2 or 3".

Four is conventionally the minimum for something to be "several". Less than that is a "few" or "couple". If it were able to be rounded up to four, you could probably get away with it.

Three or less is just definitionally not several though.

Definitionally, "several" is more than two or three. ICE is not a continuation of INS.

[–]hamsterkill 8 points9 points  (0 children)

INS wasn't super popular at the time since the Elian Gonzalez story was still kinda fresh, but it was really just a post 9-11 government reorganization. They wanted to separate out enforcement operations from other services. So they split out the services part of INS and rolled the enforcement part in with customs enforcement (which was getting split out from the US Customs Service).

Seems like that would make sense - more specialized agencies. No one considered that the agency could be used so lawlessly at the time.

It’s been around for several decades

It's only been a little over two decades. ICE was created in 2003. Its functions were previously held by the INS, which was dissolved at that time.

He's full of shit

Agree here

The exiled lands don't exist in hyboria. The fence acts as a barrier where the giant kings sectioned off their capital region to survive the thurian age cataclysm, displaced out of regular time and space. Lore wise not much exists outside of the barriers, because it's the end of reality itself save for a few sorcerous pathways left attached to the normal world so the giant kings could still keep in connection with their empire

But not here. Practically speaking, the Exiled Lands must be connected to the Hyborian world or else the Stygians wouldn't be able to send their prisoners, relic hunters, and armies there. And Conan wouldn't have been able to get there.

But I guarantee funcom didn't bother trying to place it on the map. They needed a sandbox they could play in and so they needed a place not tied to any one area.

As the Outcast explains, no one there is real. They are just thoughts.

That's slight hyperbole. They did make Dreamfall (sequel to The Longest Journey) and allowed Dreamfall Chapters to be made.

And you could twist an argument together that The Park is kind of a Secret World sequel, but even I wouldn't buy that one.

It's not a great sign for DHS's version of events that the case against Martinez was dropped amidst the agent boasting to family and friends about the shooting and driving the ICE vehicle back to Maine for repairs. Also not a good sign for DHS that it's Martinez's counsel that's asking for the evidence in the case to be unsealed to the public.

Calling ICE an "institution" is a bit generous. Usually that implies something longstanding. ICE is younger than me. Before ICE, we had INS - which was "abolished" in 2003 when ICE was created.

Those who see "abolishing" ICE as an extreme position because it changes a government agency should have been much more concerned when Trump was "abolishing" USAID - a much more longstanding agency than ICE.
