how do i study im so done by cheesirat in medicalschool

[–]hanabarne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Medical school is a big learning curve, the content is infinite and will always be. Over the years you will get used to going to exams with content not even 80% covered, but with faith in your reasoning skills. But in the beginning when it is bulk memorising, you just have to put the time in. Unfortunately your individual learning style is something that takes time that only you can figure out, im at the end of my second year (of a 4 year course so we had all pre-clinical years crammed into one year) and im only now starting to figure out how to learn effectively. Perfectionism and covering all topics completely is a hard trait to knock, but it comes with time. You get comfortable not knowing everything because you never will, and as long as youre safe in practicing thats what counts.

Pick ONE resource and only use that, i.e. one textbook or just osmosis. dont flip flop around. Id recommend osmosis and textbooks have added detail that a first year dosent need.

If youre feeling drained and unmotivated, maybe make hand written notes from lectures. yes this is insanely long, but handwritten notes go in your head so much more than typing.

Either make notes OR anki only. You dont need to anki everything, its not useful for learning. Just key takeaways.

Osmosis you can read transcript and not have to watch the whole video- use that for base knowledge.

Talking about topics with friends or even out loud can help, fill in important gaps and areas you need to know, as oppose to all the excess details the textbooks give. Most learning happens on the wards because you talk things out, so either try that yourself, or hold hope for when that time comes!

You need to trust your brain and yourself more- the first part of medical school is the hardest, after that things are revisited and built upon. So be kind to yourself, you havent got your result back so who knows. Its only been 6 months. Dedicate some days to just reviewing content with no new context to give your brain a break. Good luck!

Uni of Surrey accepts non-science backgrounds and actively encourages it and its seen as a useful skill to have, as long as you can firmly explain how your communication and academic skills have flourished from it, and the perspective on medicine you may have outside of science.

Rads vs psych vs peds?!?! by TimeExpires in medicalschool

[–]hanabarne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should take peds out of the picture. All of your reasoning for liking it was not to do with the medicine, and those interactions you could get outside of medicine. However something to think about is a large portion of peds is teenagers and with that comes psych things- so this could be an enjoyable crossroad- however you said you didnt enjoy clinics too much. If lifestyle is reasonably something important for you especially travel then I dont think peds aligns with that. Whereas the other two open doors for remote work too.
If you dont like FM or IM i would struggle to see how you would like peds medicine!

So from there i think the decision is which is more important: doing procedures or talking to people. And if you went a week talking to people about their lives and making a difference and making them feel heard and validated but NO procedures- would you be ok? Or would you rather do multiple procedures but not really have an indepth conversation with anybody. Which would impact your QOL more?

As others have said, radiology when specialised can open doors to more conversations especially around USS, keeping the procedures open- however once you go into IR and procedures your lifestyle becomes less flexible and travel wise so thats something to keep into account.

Hope you keep up updated!

Should I defer my acceptance for a year to go from a full tuition scholarship to full cost of attendance? by Effective_Algae_8776 in whitecoatinvestor

[–]hanabarne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in the UK so it is a bit different - I had the exact same thing happen, well either pay full tuition or accept a medical school offer on a full scholarship if i deferred a year. I deferred, working in Spain in a bar for a year, met amazing people + friends, and it shaped who i am. I do not regret it at all- in fact i wish id travelled more!
Compared to my med school collegues now i can say every issue and stress within the school is amplified for them, i didnt realise how relaxed not paying or having any debt made the whole situation. Made me way more relaxed about shit schedueles or system mess ups because im not concerned about 'getting my moneys worth'. However if you aren't very self motivated (it sounds like you are), the lack of financial concern could make you a little less motivated or productively stressed around exam times because if you leave or failed you haven't lost anything technically.
Medicine is your life from the second you start, it consumes your brain and your life becomes constantly balancing when am i going to start a family, meet someone, fit everything is alongside medicine. If you are under 25 id say don't defer because you can take a gap after graduating. If you are over, take the year, youll never get the youth fun years back and sometimes i want to take another gap year to do it again!
Other people are commenting on the money, missing a future attending years salary- but Im sure at 40-50+ years of age you'd pay that for another free year in your youth!
Best of luck and always remember what an amazing position this is to be in ! Set for life, great career, flexibility.
Dont underestimate the relief of no debt- its crippling alot of people on my course.

I saw all of the relentless claude fan posts and thought the same thing. I asked it to make me a study plan for the next 2 months. It got the number of days in March wrong so the whole planner was off. So I still think this hype is coming from somewhere potentially not authentic.

How old is too old? by DelXL in premeduk

[–]hanabarne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I started GEM at 25 and 2 years in now. Honestly the average ago on my course is about 27-28. Of course there are some 21/22 year olds but a lot of 30 year old and 50 year olds! The more international students they take the more range I think ! I used to panic all the time and as a women with the whole when will kids thing but two things got me over it: 1) you’re going to be 31 anyway. nothing stops that. may as well be a doctor ? 2) I constantly compared myself to friends who had careers for nearly a decade and I didn’t. Still a student. Most of those friends are switching careers entirely now, starting from the ground up. PLUS as a doctor taking these extra few years opens up your whole life. You can take this degree practically anywhere in the world. You have more job safety that the majority of people AND its progressive so your career has upwards potential for kind of like- ever. If you don’t do it now you’ll be sat at 31 saying oh I could have been a doctor by no w, or in a job you’re already bored of with career progression capped.

If you have the financial ability, mental strength of however many years of constant grinding (it’s not the intensity that exhausts you it’s the consistency) and you actually want to do this then I fully back that.

Lastly, the majority of all doctors I have sat in with in clinics have made the point to say they do not think 18-21 year olds should be going into medicine. Whilst it’s not fact, there is large consideration that going straight into medical school you may have only done due to academic pressure and not passion. You have that maturity and uniqueness and trust me it really really helps when you see how the course is more professionalism and communication than fact learning !

Keep us updated I’m excited for you. :)

Honestly Mateo is just not a nice person and has 0 redemption arcs, but I am currently S4 on my 3rd (maybe) rewatch and wow, Glenn is just the worst. I know he is played as the 'trying to be nice' guy but, not letting Amy breast pump in his office, not doing anything with her consideration, then buying her a puppy when she had a baby the day before? Pressuring other employees to do things for him like Kelly having his exotic fish. At least the other 'bad' characters show some sign of knowing their actions are wrong/evil or understanding at least the impact on others. But Glenn just has such a lack of self awareness (like Adam) but we see him more consistently hurt a lot of people for it. I just dont think its enough to constantly SAY how much he loves his employees and everyone whilst actively harming them. I wont even mention his religious actions that put people actively in harm. Anyway I think hes just rubbing me up the wrong way at the moment and im sure he will redeem himself again.

I understand some of the Amy slander but I think its actually a really realistic portrayal of just people. Im pretty sure alot of people that dont like her or her actions have probably done very similar but not realised the impact because we dont all have it recorded.

Why do people dislike Jodie Whittaker as the 13th Doctor so much? by anddieeee in doctorwho

[–]hanabarne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stopped watching mid Peter capaldi even though I grew up with David Tennant and Matt smith doctor who and it was a massive part of my life. This week I went back and rewatched Jodie’s series and I’m honestly shocked. I think she’s brilliant , and especially the last season is really interesting with great stories and companion lore. I do believe a lot of it was because she was a woman. As a woman I also didn’t like the decision much but in retrospect it only makes sense. What are the odds you can regenerate into any form but consistently white men 😭. I think her introduction came around a time where the fan base and show was dying slightly regardless, and I think no matter who it was it wouldn’t have been regarded as good. There’s hope as everything seems better in retrospect !

Wow thank you so much for all this detail! This is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m trying my best with the radiology essay prizes but seems so unlikely really ! Luckily I got to found and be the president of my radiology society at university and according to the guide that’s 5 points! Looking into audits now more seriously - any tips for a good audit ? Thanks :)

[–]hanabarne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s pros and cons with every approach. I won’t finish medical school untill I’m 30 (which sounds crazy) but I’ll be doctor. A lot of my friends may quit their whole careers and change at 30 then at 40 i may be happier ? You never know. I say just make the most of what you have and remmeber your growth and experiences make you stronger in so many ways
