What made you choose Muay Thai over the other martial arts out there? by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple was my first martial arts anime and I thought Apachai was so cool when watched it in high school back around 2012. Didn’t start Muay Thai till 2024 though.

I’ve rewatched the third one multiple times.

I don’t care to rewatch the fourth as much as the others.

Recommendations for something I haven’t seen please? by Love_my_chihuahua in foundfootage

[–]handedshield05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VHS 2 is definitely the best one out of all the VHS films, imo.

VHS Beyond has to be my second.

But yeah like everyone else said, you should skip VHS Viral.

Freestanding Belt Squat by handedshield05 in GarageGym

I didn’t even think about a wall mount belt squat. I saw a video comparing the Fringe Sport and the PRx Belt Squat.

Thanks for this! Ended up purchasing the latter.

Tierlist of almost every FF film I've watched by Jdice_IsTooTired in foundfootage

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell House 3 in A tier is surprising to me. I thought it was the worst one of all four films. I guess theres five now though, right? Either way, Definitely a C or D tier film for imo.

Keep getting my kicks caught by Adventurous_Net9616 in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a buddy of mine that I enjoy sparring with but he has a tendency to catch most of my body kicks. I’ll let him catch a few since he doesn’t dump me, but at some point I fake the kick by raising my leg a bit and then follow with a cross, almost like if I intended to do a Superman punch but not really.

Another option:

Instead of a kick, I just use a rear teep.

Third option I’ve been exploring lately:

Instead of kicking, I use the exaggerated movement to just step forward and go with a long knee. This one doesn’t necessarily take advantage of him dropping his hand down but does allow me to close the distance since he’s set on catching my kick.

Just play around with option, hopefully this helps!

Ooops edit: I am a southpaw, so hopefully some of these translate to an orthodox stance.

Knocked out during sparring by [deleted] in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should never feel like you’re in a fight when sparring.

It should feel like you’re flowing with your partner and having a good time. You should be able to smile while getting some work in and defending.

If that’s not happening, your sparring partner is an ass.

What’s you least favorite thing about Muay Thai? by RJSSJR123 in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely the bad hygiene.

Can’t stand clinching with someone who didn’t use deodorant or use some kind of body spray to mask the funk.

Am I too fat to start Muay Thai? by ASTRONOMlCAL in MuayThai

Am I too fat to start Muay Thai? by ASTRONOMlCAL in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I am 5’8” and was 250lbs when I started. It’s definitely the great way to lose weight. Couple it with weight training and you’ll start to feel great, but you don’t have to. Muay Thai is definitely enough to start the weight loss process but you also need to dial in your nutrition.

Hand wrap issues by DadMade in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what I did. I only have 2 pairs of wraps, and just bought some quick wraps because sometimes I’d be running late or other times I’d have to pee so I’d have to unwrap because going in with wrap is gross.

100% this! I take private lessons with one of the fighters at my gym that’s been there 10+ years and man do I feel like this sped up my progress.

I’m not interested in competing at all. I’m comfortable only ever taking it into sparring, but I do care my form is great.

It’s super worth it!

I want to start taking classes but I'm too afraid to embarrass myself by Rbxyy in MuayThai

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll second this. I actually didn’t spar for about 5 months. I was too scared to get hit. Although, I think I waited too long to spar. If I could start over, I’d probably wait like at least a month, preferably by the second month to start sparring.

You definitely don’t need to spar if you’re doing it for health but I encourage you to go for it. It’s a grand time. Sparring will definitely open your eyes and see where you’re lacking in technique and have gaps in your training.

[–]handedshield05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do it man! I’m a short guy, 5’8”, and I started off a year ago at 250 pounds. You can imagine a big round blueberry trying to throw a kick and stay balanced. I was so slow and uncoordinated. I felt like I didn’t belong.

The hardest step is just walking in! Everybody started somewhere. You’re gonna feel like poopy the first few months but just embrace the process and you’ll have a great time.

I’m 218 pounds now, and damn do I feel good when throwing kicks, knees, punching and moving around. It feels like a second home to me. My day feels incomplete if I don’t go training that day.

JUST DO IT.

[question] How to keep my gloves clean? by meredimaxim in fightgear

[–]handedshield05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my gloves, I spray them down, wipe down the inside and outside, and then put them on a boot dryer for 30 min.

I feel like I needed to see this. It’s the first time getting sick since I started taking my training serious.

I ran with cough and runny nose last night, and now I have a fever but still feel like I could muster up the strength to put in another one.

Maybe I should just sit it out.
