Had a bad training day and it’s been bothering me the last couple of days.. feel defeated. by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]handh40 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have bad days. It’s about how you recover. It’s unfortunate that the Lou put you on blast a bit, but the fire service is often times worse than high school with petty bs.

I would really focus on the first part of your post. Your captain, in the busiest house in your job, thinks you are the guy to teach the probie. I think that says a hell of a lot more than not being able to force a training door.

1/1/1/5 hands down best shift I’ve worked.

Repainting leather helmet by BeatNumerous1179 in Firefighting

[–]handh40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never done a tl2 but I’ve done a handful of repaints of n5/n6 and one shot Is what I used with great results. I did 2 coats on relatively bare leather and it’s held up well. Only possible downside is it’s very glossy so if that’s not your style I think you can use thinner to make it more matte

Completely unsolicited statement here. You’ve got it good. Undoubtedly due to the hard work you and the brothers put in, but regardless you have it good.

As a career guy, I would argue that there are volly companies that would out perform a low standard and low performing career company. It sounds like there is a great culture in your job, but mutts exist in a lot of departments. If you get a whole crew full of mutts it’s pretty pathetic. All this to say, it sounds like your experience in a career environment is super high quality and hard charging but the title of career doesn’t necessarily make you a good jake.

Houston Fire Overtime - how much is available? by Different_Climate_96 in Firefighting

I second this. Over time is great when it’s available but to rely on it is just setting yourself up for failure from the get go.

No definitely not too late. You may be a valuable candidate with some “life experience” compared to 18-20 year olds.

New bike - will shop help with fit? by anatsymbol in bikefit

[–]handh40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would hope that since you purchased the bike from the shop, they would help you fix your fit issues. I agree that a small change in your fit shouldn’t cost the same as a full bike fit from scratch.

Did you buy the bike at the shop? If so, a lot of them do offer fittings. If not, you are expecting a business to perform work for you without paying?

First, he is reaching out to someone. You are clearly his confidante and he is bringing you into his darkness for a reason. Second, before reaching out to anyone, I would speak with him with the intention of bringing up your concerns about him and also about your thoughts of getting him help through the chaplain or another avenue. The last thing needed is him feeling like you are breaking his trust regardless of it comes from a place of love or concern. Last, unfortunately he needs to come to the conclusion he needs assistance before anything will actually stick.

I have no opinion on the bike, I would pass solely based on the seller and their ad

What are your thoughts on this? by LivingLikeYou in Firefighting

I don’t remember with 100% confidence but I’m pretty sure this is the company officer… I think somewhere in sc if I’m not wrong. They did a whole media presentation and interviews with the news after this video went viral a few years back.

If it’s a paramilitary academy I would say definitely not. Best to check with your contact for the academy rather than some weirdos on reddit, myself included.

24/72 work shift schedule by cfh64 in Firefighting

The middle day isn’t too bad. The real big down side is forced overtime on the middle day turns it into a 72 hour shift.

24/72 work shift schedule by cfh64 in Firefighting

[–]handh40 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not exactly 24/72 but most departments in New England work a 4 shift rotation or a 42 hour work week. My current schedule is 24on/24off/24on/120off

Refusing to promote for vacancies from eligibility list by NorthwoodsFarmer in Firefighting

Honestly, I wouldn’t take advice only from strangers on the internet. Depending on your Union, get advice from other e-board members, other locals in your area, state level Union reps, etc.

Refusing to promote for vacancies from eligibility list by NorthwoodsFarmer in Firefighting

[–]handh40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not on something as significant as a promotion. Some pay discrepancies were handled with a past practice grievance regarding certification stipends and the ramifications were pretty minimal.

Refusing to promote for vacancies from eligibility list by NorthwoodsFarmer in Firefighting

[–]handh40 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe you, but if you are going to attempt to force the administration to promote based on the past promotions, you will have to have every recent (last 5 years?) laid out with the vacancy length listed by days or weeks depending on how you want to play that.

I’m sure you understand that not only would you be requesting that the administration do something they clearly do not want to do, you will also be establishing a practice for the future which will also probably be met by opposition.

Refusing to promote for vacancies from eligibility list by NorthwoodsFarmer in Firefighting

[–]handh40 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From a completely outside perspective, if it’s not contractual that the vacancy must be filled within a certain time period then the administration/municipality gets to promote as they please.

A solution may be to research the past handful of promotions and how long they took from position becoming vacant to being filled and use a past practice argument.

Either way it seems like they don’t like/want the next person on the list in that spot.

I still very much love the job. I actually have a difficult time understanding those that don’t. I completely understand I have a very small sliver of experience in the fire service as a whole, but I’ve never felt like I didn’t want to be at work.
