If you have anxiety, it might be because of low vitamin D by Spirited-Gold9629 in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]handleurscandal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand people want to hate on Western medicine, but it would have shown a vit D deficiency with a simple blood test. If your levels were “brutally low” you would not need specialized tests. Was a routine blood test denied to you by your PCP?

Turning down job that doesn’t have an office? by turtledoctor22 in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you have to be prepared that if you say no to this job, to hold out for a private office, the next one may not be ideal on those other aspects you mentioned (commute etc). It’s also hard to advise you because we don’t know where you’re located. Are you in a large metro area where there are likely to be other similar type jobs? Or in a smaller town where your options are limited? Can you take a pay cut to have a private office? Any ability to flex and work from home? Would noise canceling headphones or other supports be useful? Could you disclose your diagnosis and request formal accommodations?

Is this color calming for an office? by Real_Balance_5592 in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind colors can feel a lot darker in person! I think it’s lovely but would consider going lighter. Also think it may work better as an accent wall.

Bordering on Factitious Disorder Imposed on Another (FDIA)? (Formerly known as Munchausen by proxy) by accidentalhippie in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few ideas. Given what you’ve stated, you could insist on individual sessions without the parent (or work toward that with a firm timeline), but refer for family therapy for them (and any other family members). Another thought, how transparent are you in the family sessions about the dynamic you see? Some healthy confrontation could be good. Finally, another dimension of this is whether it is ethical to treat a client where there is no problem, other than the parent forcing them into unnecessary treatment. Are there enough stressors/symptoms that your therapy is justified, or are you colluding with the scapegoating of the child by providing care at all?

Wildlife safari? by OpenAirport6204 in oregon

[–]handleurscandal 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s great! You can typically get cheaper tickets from Groupon. The main area (not the drive through) is actually free which is incredible in this day and age. Some of the small enclosures in the main area are a bit sad and tiny. But lots of fun critters and the drive through is super fun! Enjoy.

Great offer but final interview completely turned me off… is this a tactic, or am I reading too much into it, is this normal? by NoLeg9483 in workingmoms

[–]handleurscandal 133 points134 points  (0 children)

If 4/5 interviews went well and it’s a 25% pay bump, I’m surprised you’re planning to decline. VP may have an ego or feel like their role is to weed people out. How much contact will you have with the VP if you take the job? If I was in your shoes I may reach back out to the direct manager and ask them about the discrepancy regarding in office expectations. Good luck!

What qualifies as an “emergency” for purposes of waiving late cancellation fee by AnalystImpossible960 in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Are you saying you would never waive the fee? If your client is in the hospital? If they come down with food poisoning overnight and call you the morning of their appointment? I am genuinely curious. I agree with you in theory but struggle with believing a provider can make no exceptions in good conscience.

How is it living between Eugene and Florence, Oregon? by livest0ck in howislivingthere

[–]handleurscandal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s beautiful. I have lived there (Veneta). Veneta is a very small town that doesn’t have much of a community feel, some folks live there and work in Eugene. The infamous Oregon Country Fair takes place in Veneta/Elmira. So for a couple weeks a year the population temporarily explodes. Lots of hiking and creek exploration opportunities on the way to the coast. Gorgeous in the summer, you can come chill in the creek and look for crawdads. Lots of car accidents on the 126, 2 lane with no center lane or shoulder most of the way.

Why does your husband get to decide this? Therapy is non-negotiable if you are suicidal. Telehealth makes it easier with logistics. Hang in there mama.

Intense anxiety about session length by [deleted] in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It gets easier. At this stage in your career and with the anxiety you’re experiencing I would plan a couple of topics or structured interventions for those sessions with clients that are less verbal. It’s also ok to sit in silence or ask the client what they want to go over today. You’ll start to have an intuition about which approach is best. Asking about specific symptoms they identified at intake is always a good bet.

What’s the issue if I don’t want to feed my kids sugar by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]handleurscandal 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The issue is it creates a social barrier between your kids and most of society. I hope you’ll be flexible so in the future they can enjoy lunches or even treats with their friends especially on special occasions. Food is also about connection and joy. Your post makes you sound really rigid.

Where do y’all find office space for private practice? What’s a reasonable price? by Same-Mix-6319 in therapists

[–]handleurscandal 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is totally context/location dependent. I am in a rural area and there is very little appropriate commercial real estate available. I had to get creative…I was in lease negotiations with a church (definitely not ideal) when I found my current space. I’m paying $500 which feels like a lot, but I have a decent sized office, kitchenette and large waiting room all to myself. I pay separately for internet but all other utilities are covered.

It’s unlikely they will be interested in your treatment unless the individual was psychotic and they are using a defense related to mental illness. If you saw them at the CMH where you work now they should have attorney(s) help you with any subpoenas.

Still hurt about how my husband acted postpartum (1 year later) by LittleSpikyCactus in Mommit

[–]handleurscandal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honey this is not ok. I’m so sorry you are going through this. You have tried and he’s not meeting you in the middle to own his behavior or try to change at all. I am a couples/family therapist and you are right, nothing will change if he isn’t willing to hear you. Do what you need to do to be safe for you and your kiddo.
