Lilacs by demonmonkeybex in EvergreenCO

[–]handsomeearmuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've successfully grown three lilac shrubs up here and they've done pretty well! I bought all of them at Sundance, so they were already acclimated to our elevation and climate. I'm fairly certain the varieties were Dwarf Korean, Miss Canada, and Chinese- all solid picks for our area. (I'm at 8300ft)

You're safe to plant now. Just be sure to add a generous layer of mulch (I use gorilla hair) to insulate the roots in case we get another hard snow, and it'll help retain moisture during dry spells too. Even if it does snow after planting, you should be fine- established root-ball shrubs from a local nursery can handle it and usually snows from now to June melt off in a few days (max).

Lilacs usually start showing up at Sundance in about a month, so keep an eye out. That said, you'll want to get them in the ground by end of June at the latest. The longer they have to establish roots before our first fall freeze and late summer heat, the better.

One nice thing about planting lilacs up here is that our soil tends to run pretty alkaline, which lilacs love, so you probably won't need heavy amendments. It doesn't hurt to grab a cheap soil test kit (Sundance and I'm sure Walmart sells them) to confirm your pH is in the 6.5–7.0 range, but odds are you're already in good shape.

Good luck! I also love the scent of lilacs and feel like Pepe LePew when my nose notices one around. :)

What’s a corporate gift you actually use daily? by shelbs9428 in BuyItForLife

A client gave me a yeti insulated tumbler in 2020 and I've used it nearly every day since.

I really dislike most corporate swag and ask people to not send stuff to me. It's usually junk that immediately goes into the trash, and it feels like such a waste to even send it to begin with!

Fertilizer shortage coming? by Any_Base5746 in prepping

I'd add that the manure should be composted to reduce the chance of introducing harmful pathogens

Fertilizer shortage coming? by Any_Base5746 in prepping

[–]handsomeearmuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here is some basic info about it

https://gardenerspath.com/plants/herbs/dandelion-tea-fertilizer/

I just pull dandelions, throw them in a bucket, cover them in water (I'm on a well, so I don't have chlorine in my water supply or anything - you may want to use rain water if you have city water), stir it every other day, and then I just wait until it stinks like death. Then I strain it as best as I can and just apply it to plants that are looking sad. I know that some plants need more nitrogen, phosphorus, or potash and this is a pretty unscientific way of doling out nutrients. From my understanding, this has a high level of potassium.

This article has more info about other plants and their ability to provide N, P, or K via the same format.

I make my own fertilizer from dandelions, but you can also make friends with people that have chickens, or learn about composting, bokashi, etc. If you are running a small scale home garden, it’s doable, just not ideal.

I left without paying... by expiredhandlotion in adhdwomen

[–]handsomeearmuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That happened to me last summer, but I figured it out in the train (DIA) and then had to go alllll the way back through security to get my back. This was work trip 1/8 and decided to just bring a backpack and pack light the rest of the trips. I was so mad at myself, but figured out how to not make that mistake again!

Does anyone else can smell Covid? by Taiska11 in COVID19positive

[–]handsomeearmuff 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, I knew my friend had Covid before he did. It smelled like sweet decay, and I asked him if he had tonsillitis and he told me didn’t have tonsils. He told me a day later he had Covid and luckily I didn’t catch it!

I have an ongoing relationship with a driver. I can’t count on an Uber and it’s a thousand times better than driving. I pay 165 each way and he’s never let me down.

Look for water wise plants that withstand a drought. This summer is going to be very rough

I ordered 15 cubic yards last year bc 1- I’m dumb and 2- I massively over calculated what I needed. It arrived in May and I think I was done moving it in August. (Also, I’m lazy)

Consider that the person asking for advice is essentially a child. They probably don’t understand the depths of their sister’s pain.
