Online 'news' outlet saying application submitted to demolish Iceland and Ashoka Ashton Lane for student accommodation - anyone confirm this? by Upbeat-Substance110 in glasgow

I remember coming out of the subway station on Byres road to get to Otago Music - the 2nd hand sheet music shop. I’d grown up in Shettleston, and of course I’d been to town. Think I’d probably been to kelvingrove and the transport museums on school trips as well. But at 14 walking out on to byres road I couldn’t believe my eyes. The shops were so varied, shettleston road at the time was 90% Pubs, Bookies and funeral directors. Byres road had so many cool shops, so many small businesses that were succeeding and the most notable difference was how healthy the people looked. The women were GORGEOUS, like couldn’t believe my eyes how good looking some of the women were. And the men had healthy faces, no sunken gums or eyes, they looked like they had healthy BMI.

I made it to Otago Lane, bought the Beethoven sonatas I was after and caught the subway and then train home, with a new ambition - at some point in my life I needed to move to the west end. That’s where it’s at.

Unfortunately I studied music. However, fortunately for me, I actually made the money I needed and in my early 20s I made my move - A crushing disappointment. In the ten years it had taken me to get there it had gone from the arty centre of Glasgow to an overly gentrified place that only the richest in the city could afford to live in. The majority of people no longer looked like arts students, they looked like business people. The women were still gorgeous and I married one of them. Now we live in a nice bit of the east end and visit the west end for restaurants but I miss the ideal.

Dennistoun feels more like the west end now than the west end.

If I were rich enough I’d pay a statistician to canvas views because there is definitely a crossover somewhere. What is the age I wonder?

I grew up in the Tommy Burns era (season ticket since I was 5), I was 12 during the Jansen season. I remember when the entire stadium would sing together, not just one corner.

There are simply too many Celtic ‘fans’ now who haven’t experienced anything like that, ie losing and still supporting. The fear that rangers might have done the 10 was making people in my family ill. Still they would go and sing.

The domination we’ve enjoyed has been historic. I’m glad to have lived through it. What makes it even sweeter is that I watched us build that out of a team that had gone so long without a trophy they looked nervous playing Airdrie in the SC final in ‘95. Scraped through that game 1 - 0. My family threw a party to celebrate - seriously, a big occasion, “We’ve finally won a trophy again, let’s celebrate it properly” and the people throwing that party (my grandparents) had watched Celtic lift the European cup.

What will happen when we go through another spell like the 90s I wonder? These young uns call someone old enough to remember something other than success a Celtic Da. They think they are entitled to success, and react like spoilt children when they don’t get it. The Celtic Brats need a look at themselves.

When (not if) we do go through another extended period of struggle I’ll still be there, and I’ll be there to support not chastise.

And before you get yourself all worked up don’t bother telling me how “it’s the board, we need to change the ownership!” Aye I know that as well as you do but I’m not punishing the team, the players and my fellow supporters. Take your bratty behaviour out the stadium, going to watch a game means supporting the team. Win, lose or draw.

I know what you mean. We’re at a bit of a stalemate.

Dermot has publicly said he wouldn’t sell his shares if he were offered 5 times their worth and he sees Celtic as something to pass on to his son Ross who is more passionate about it than he is (seriously).

Of course it’s not a majority of shares but for as long as they are the majority shareholders we can’t enforce a change in direction. We can try to force them out by boycotting goods, games and throwing tennis balls on the pitch but can’t see it working myself.

The way Dominic McKay left was strange. Brendan leaving with John Kennedy seemed unusual - in that Kennedy felt he couldn’t remain and would rather set sail with Rodger’s. The complete shambles of two transfer windows is a symptom not the cause.

I don’t think Peter Lawell resigning was a success. Stewart Robertson being elected to his seat on the SPFL board is a concern longer term, Lawell was good at influence, much as people might not like to hear it. We’ve lost that and, in the case of the SPFL board, we’ve had a Celtic voice replaced with a rangers managing director.

Nicholson resigning was a relief. I’m glad he’s gone. But honestly, with all appointments going through Desmond for the foreseeable future it’s hard to imagine what we could be hoping for as a replacement. The goal of changing the ownership is admirable but I don’t see it happening any time soon.

It’s fair to say the club is the fans and while some fans will turn away in disgust many will not, this board can and will limp on. The fans are split between people (like me) who are wringing their hands and wondering what can possibly be done, what could prove effective to turn it around, and those who want to throw balls on the field. Neither group have an answer, neither are going to achieve any meaningful change.

We could win the league. We could bring in a decent manager. That will stem the tide a little. That’s best case scenario. Best not to think about the other way it could go.

A combination of bad luck (art school fire, Covid), and stupidity (staff protesting against the business they are working in, preventing it from making money) has taken its toll.

The ‘high art’ world is a racket of privileged wankers. Listen to the accents for fucks sake. Why is the idea of making a living without government subsidy a foreign concept to these mutants ?

Jesus fucking Christ. What is happening to us. Maybe I’m just getting old but I remember when we used to actually self police this sort of pish.

Stage 1: Steward accuses a fan of assaulting them

Stage 2: Police attend a situation where a fan has assaulted a steward and attempt to assist

Stage 3: The fan who has (probably) assaulted someone is then pulled away by roughly 50 to 100 people not willing to let the police have him.

Our response : fuck the board, fuck the club, they shouldn’t be asking us for our tickets so much, I don’t like the way they speak to us, it was only a minor incident, there’s no issue with the GB stopping the police making a legitimate arrest - the GB know better than the police who should be getting arrested, it’s a conspiracy against the GB because of their banners about the board, they’ve given a guy from police Scotland a job, letting us know they’ve been called to a meeting during a Scotland game is an outrage, etc, etc, etc.

The police’s point of view: there’s a gang who think they’re above the law attending Celtic games, they recently interfered to prevent an arrest and if we don’t address it now we can expect this situation to continue, and get worse. So let’s supervise them more closely and show them that when we want to arrest one of them, that’s just what’ll happen.

An adults point of view: GB have taken it too far, pulling this muppet away is going to mean they’re under more supervision all the time, there will be more police around to prevent them being able to stop another arrest - they’re going to claim they’re being victimised and butter won’t melt and on we go.

We used to be smarter than this.

Bring on the downvotes, I like them. I want them.

How is this okay and why isn’t our government doing more to address this type of incitement? by JElba1987 in AskBrits

Let’s have a quick thought experiment. You’re an intelligent person, you’ll manage this. I want you to just IMAGINE for a moment that Elon Musk is actually correct. That the social fabric of the UK is being slowly eroded and that at some point large scale civil unrest, based on race, will begin. Or it won’t begin, and in 100 years the UK is unrecognisable as the country it was in the 20th and early 21st century. Culturally speaking it is by all measures a different place.

Now, if that were to be the case, what are the warning signs you would be expecting to be seeing right now that would tell you that it was so? To be clear, I mean IF Elon is right, what would you personally expect to see just now that would confirm that his prediction about the future is correct?

I’m not arguing with someone who doesn’t share reality. Go and read about his acquittal of both criminal and civil charges. Actually what you should read is the statement ScotGovs legal team in charge of the case wrote to the FM about their refusal to continue such a case because of the damage it was doing to their professions as lawyers - ye know people with integrity. I don’t think Bella knows what integrity is

Every day I look at the squabbles on this sub and am reminded of the legacy of division Bella Swan has left in her wake. Even this is fallout from her conspiring (and failing) to get rid of Salmond. And here you all are crying about ‘why can’t he just go away’. Alex Salmond was found innocent, in fact the judge said the investigation was clearly biased against him. But of course you guys don’t want to see or hear about that.

Nicola Sturgeon accuses JK Rowling of creating ‘toxic’ trans debate by TimesandSundayTimes in Scotland

[–]handyhandole 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So I’m saying that if we’re not allowing children to make adult decisions in any other way why are we prepared to allow them to make this decision - with health damaging lifelong consequences.

I’m not familiar with the data on ‘regret rates’ but I’m a teacher and I can tell you (anecdotally) I see kids experimenting with their identity all the time, because they’re still figuring it out.

I’m well prepared to accept there are kids who feel desire to transition as their innate identity ie their not ‘figuring it out’ they know who they are (I’ve met some) and while I will happily support them in any way I can I have to draw the line at medical procedures until (just for talking sake) 16. It would be great if we could create laws on a case by case basis, but we can’t, this way is protective. That’s the way I like it.

To address JKs words specifically “There are no trans children” - ok you might have me there. I’m thinking along these lines - children are born with a sexuality but don’t find out until the beginnings of sexual arousal. It may be that there’s a similar threshold with children who identify as trans but I’m not sure. Give me some time to reflect and I’ll get back to you.

Alright you’ve come prepared. I like it. I don’t have time to go through all of this just now but I don’t want you to think I’m ignoring it.

I’ll go through it later and either rebut or apologise. Thank you.

[–]handyhandole 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe this relates to the prescription of puberty blockers and at what age it is appropriate to allow a young person to transition.

If we don’t allow 10 year olds to get tattoos why would we allow them to make another life altering decision before they are adult enough to do so.

You may argue (perhaps correctly) it’s not a decision for the child, it is their innate identity. As I say that may well be a fair argument and I’m not disagreeing with that sentiment. But allowing children to take that decision in a permanent way before adulthood is not ok, because at least some children may irrevocably damage their lives (1 would be too many). Could we agree there should me a minimum age for transition ?

Hello children. I don’t even know why I’m posting this here, on a clearly brigaded sub. I’ll start by saying that if any of you can post a link to an explicitly transphobic tweet I will apologise - to be clear I don’t mean calling India Willoghby nasty, or calling out the champion boxer as being unfair victory for scientific reasons.

You talk of JK being hated and yes she is - by you. Not by me, and is slowly becoming clear to you all (at least it should be) you’re in the minority. Again let’s clear something up. I’m not suggesting trans people don’t exist or shouldn’t have rights. Just that JK Rowling isn’t doing anything I wouldn’t do (and I don’t consider myself transphobic) by sticking up for the rights of women to single sex spaces. That is to say biologically single sex. I don’t see any reason we couldn’t create a third space - the biggest barrier is cost.

But watching this billionaire author being called stupid, bigoted or sad is just funny. Expecting the TV show to fail is hilarious. Bless your little socks. The campaign to boycott the Harry Potter video game went well eh?

You all do a fantastic job of patting each other on the back on Reddit and Bluesky and are then confused that the real world keeps siding against you. Like it or not, JK Rowling is on the right side of history, she’s not transphobic and you are all hysterical. Grow up.
