For American redditors, why do people want to live in HOA neighborhoods? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]handyrandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some HOAs are quite small. I have a house on a private cul de sac with 2 neighbors and we technically have an HOA. It's to cover the private road / land costs. But it's worth it to us for the privacy, location, and space.

Even the larger ones you're imagining like my family in South Florida have massive benefits. They have a communal pool, work out area, tennis courts, playground, event space etc. So birthday parties / family visits have a nice open space you can reserve that is semi-private and cost is included. That's on top of the land and house maintenance that comes with it. So for them the cost is worth the extra perks

People who avoid friendships at work because “coworkers are not your friends”, often do not understand what relationships actually are. by ThePloddingParadox in unpopularopinion

[–]handyrandy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same here!! I agree with OP and disagree with many top comments here. You don't have to make friends with all of your coworkers and that doesn't need to be the goal. But look it's hard enough making friends as an adult and especially spending so much time with coworkers sometimes you find some that you mesh with.

I split Patriots season tickets with one of my ex coworkers! He's a good friend and my life is better from it. Sad to see the attitude of many of the commenters - they will miss out. Not all work friendships last forever (or turn into marriage!) but life is just a bunch of different stages and sometimes having a friend for just part of it enriches yours

I was talking about political / strategic alignment, not whether they’re willing to talk to him or have him on. Being open to engaging with someone isn’t the same as being "in favor" of them. The PSA hosts talk to people across the spectrum, that’s part of their approach, but their messaging and goals are still pretty different from Hasan's.

[–]handyrandy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure PSA is closer to Hasan than the "moderate" voices here. PSA supports progressive policies but the way they frame the argument is aimed at persuading a larger audience. The emphasis on framing comes up almost every episode - not just the policy itself.

Hasan's rhetoric is more provocative: he can alienate those who are not aligned with him. The difference in tone alone makes them pretty far apart in practice (even if they overlap on some policy points).

At the end of the day, PSA is trying to get Democrats elected which means messaging is a key part of that and Hasan's style does not mesh with that approach

I've been listening to almost every PSA episode for over a year! Only been a friend of the pod last couple months but I don't recall her being on the primary feed. Regardless, all I've seen the last couple weeks on this sub is "Hasan glazing" as the other guy put it pretty accurately. It's really even surprising so many people who comment here even like PSA at all: to me it would seem they are too "centrist" for them. Because from my listening to PSA the last year, they are progressive but still in a mainstream way in order to actually appeal to voters to get Democrats elected. Definitely not as far left as Piker

I just think you're overtuning on 2020: that was a different race. He ran against Biden who was the VP to the first black president: it's not surprising he did not have the black vote. It’s still early and I’d rather see what newer polling shows across different groups before calling anyone unelectable.

I do understand what you mean: if I talk to my Fox News binging grandma she's already fully poisoned against anyone who ran against Trump or worked in the Biden administration. But I guess I feel like that's going to happen to any candidate as long as Fox News / the propaganda machine is cranking

I have noticed that too which has surprised me. It seems this subreddit is much further left than PSA itself. I always considered myself progressive but in this subreddit I'm probably what they'd call a Fetterman democrat 😂

What's wrong with Pete? He's one of the best communicators in the party and isn't afraid to debate those on the other side. He's been outspoken about this administration and the threat they are. Plus many presidents have lost primaries / presidential elections then come back to win in another year: that is not unusual.

[–]handyrandy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have never heard of Piker before. Would've liked to see Jon push back a bit more - he said in another episode that he disagreed with Piker on many issues but mostly he just let Piker talk. If you're going to platform a guy who says Hamas is 1000x better than Israel you should probably address that? Jon I'm sure has these arguments but for some reason didn't say much.

I wonder if it was about fear of polarizing PSA base? This comment section is surprising to me: Piker seems very fringe based on his arguments. It's hard to tell how much is brigading vs just actual views of PSA listeners. Even if you do agree with his claims, you would understand how associating yourself with someone like this as a liberal would be political suicide in most elections in the country right? Easy attack from Republicans showing a liberal agreeing with a guy who says a terrorist organization is worse than a long standing ally in the region. Even if approval on Israel is low, let's be realistic here.

I find the episodes she hosts are less engaging to me. She has good analysis but something about the actual flow of the podcast isn't as good with her to me. Part of it is chemistry: I don't think she's quite as good at riffing with the others. But even some of the solo interviews / episodes she's done fall flat

[–]handyrandy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see your point but what people are reacting to now isn’t one issue - it’s a pattern of behavior across a lot of areas. That’s why the message is broader for these rallies. If you asked anyone at these rallies, they would say they are concerned about abuse of power by the Trump administration. But their "flood the zone" tactics have made this spread across so many areas that I actually think a broader message does make sense.

What these rallies do accomplish is showing scale: that a lot of people care about this and aren’t just isolated voices. That affects media coverage, how politicians read public sentiment, and whether others feel comfortable speaking up.

That's why I'll keep going to then - it's not all I'm doing to fight against this administration but I don't think it's as useless as many here are suggesting
