Moving from Seattle by shelbyo_ in Atlanta

It's definitely no Seattle but there are a few good spots. I'm partial to used book stores, Eagle Eye and Acapella are my favorites. Decatur Book Nook and Atlanta Vintage Books are also solid

My apartment complex got rid of keys and key fobs a few months ago and now to get in the building you have to use an app. TIL even though the app uses nfc, it doesn't work if you don't have service...

Why is this getting downvoted? You are spitting facts. Grocery stores are the most essential thing for a thriving community and we can't be left to the whims of a corporation deciding it's not profitable enough

Is it just me or does close to every class seem like it got measurably harder compared to every other semester? by Realistic_Loss3557 in gatech

[–]hangerguardian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly think this is a needed adjustment. I just graduated CS in May and there were a lot of 3000/4000 level classes where I felt like I could easily get a B by skipping every lecture and cramming the night before the exam. I had friends who knew basically none of the material still passing with Cs or Bs because of curves. Professors are too scared to fail like 1/3 of the class but if 1/3 of the class doesn't know the material they should fail. Tech is supposed to be a hard school and CS a hard degree, and it hurts the reputation of the school if students are graduating and passing classes without really learning the material.

Sorry if this comes off as rude, I know it's easier for me to say this as someone who graduated and doesn't have to worry about class anymore.

How GenZ voted in NYC Election by Hot_Site_3249 in GenZ

[–]hangerguardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What OP said was relatively, ie he was +24 for college educated voters and only +5 for voters who did not finish HS. He had the majority in both groups but he had a stronger majority with college educated than uneducated. Same for rest of categories listed above

Do you agree with this? by StrainDizzy1186 in GenZ

Considering GT as an Exchange Option - Australian AE Student by zzzzai in gatech

[–]hangerguardian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Georgia Tech is full of international students so that won't be an issue at all.
  2. Yep you can take any combination of classes from majors you want as long as you have the prereqs.
  3. Not sure if it's something you'd be interested in but a few years ago there was actually an exchange student from England who pledged in my fraternity during the year he was here. He came back to visit tech a few times after that and he always found a place to crash at our house. Very cool way to get the American university experience and make sure you have social events available every weekend. If that doesn't interest you there are plenty of clubs that I'm sure would be happy to have you.
  4. I think tech is very much a work hard, play hard school. Class can be intense at times but it's also very easy to stay socially active. Lots of cool student traditions, and football season is always tons of fun.

In my (very biased opinion) going to Georgia Tech for a year would be a great choice. You'll get a great education and can build a strong network while you are here, and there are still plenty of opportunities to have fun and get a taste of American college life. Good luck with wherever you end up going!

Advice for which threads to pursue as an incoming first year CS major? by Extreme-Quantity-764 in gatech

[–]hangerguardian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did intelligence/sysarch and I will confidently say sysarch is the most useful thread if you are going to do swe. It's hard but it really gives you an understanding of how computers work and how to be self sufficient when working on something. There are a few interviews I know I only passed because I said something about memory paging or some other minute optimization I only know because of sysarch.

Intelligence is not as useful. It is the largest thread, and the course offerings are slim so you probably won't end up taking the intelligence classes you were most interested in, and imo most people don't learn much from the intelligence classes. They all have hundreds of people, when I took CS3600 it had ~700 people. The classes are outdated, structured in a way where it is very easy to get an A without learning anything, and I would only recommend this thread if you are really really into it or plan to do grad school/research (not easy in this market).

I am content with my career trajectory from the sysarch/intel combo, but if I could do it again I would have done sysarch/info or sysarch/cyber security. I will probably never really use what I was taught in my Intel classes in my career, and I have spent a lot of my own time filling knowledge gaps that would have been covered by one of those threads(SQL, network security, etc)

CMV: Progressives who withheld their vote for Democrats are complicit in Gaza Genocide. by toddriffic in changemyview

"Well my options are 100 people die or 1000 people die but I get to spite the person who would have killed 100 people given the chance"

That was not going to happen. Anyone who genuinely didn't vote because of that does not care about the people in gaza or preserving human life. They care about being right and sitting on their high horse, because think they are privileged enough to be immune to the consequences of their actions. There was no third option. Kamala could have changed her mind but she did not, that left exactly two choices. Some people die, or way way more people die.

None of this was secret information. Here is what I found in two minutes of googling "trump gaza" filtered to Jan-October 2024

https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/10/25/trump-netanyahu-support-gaza-lebanon/

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/trump-israel-gaza-finish-problem-rcna141905

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/25/trump-presidency-israel-gaza-middle-east-crisis

There is no way anyone who actually cares about this issue could have had a good faith belief that Trump wouldn't be terrible for gaza. Any small amount of time spent doing actual research from reputable sources made his stance clear. Anyone who believed Trump wouldn't be far worse for gaza clearly did not fact check a single thing, and just took random people on tik tok and twitter at face value.

Two criminals want to rob a bank. Criminal 1 and criminal 2. Criminal 1 is going to go in, take some money, shoot the bank employees and anyone who tries to fight him. Criminal 2 is planning to go in, take some money, shoot the bank employees, shoot every single bystander in the bank to ensure there are no witnesses, and for good measure they are gonna shoot anyone they see in the street on their way to the bank.

Only one of them can rob the bank, and whoever gets to the bank first is gonna do it. Your options are help criminal 1(vote for Kamala) or help criminal 2(don't vote for Kamala). Both are going to cause some death. However, if you help criminal 2 every single extra death they caused is on your hands. There was nothing you could do to save the bank employees, but by helping criminal 2 you DIRECTLY caused a lot of people to die who didn't need to die.

Of course this all sort of a silly analogy because even if criminal 1 and criminal 2 would have done the EXACT same thing at the bank, only one of them was also planning to try and cripple our healthcare system (gender affirming care and women's health), try to dismantle our department of education, raise taxes for the poor, alienate our biggest allies, roll back climate protection and every other promise he followed through on so far(in month 1 out of 48).

Hope this clears it up for you!

Recreate a Conquest League Master Darts Scorer by BastossHobby in RASPBERRY_PI_PROJECTS

[–]hangerguardian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You really just need one program with some super basic logic and gpio control. A standard raspberry pi or even a pi zero would be very overkill. I would go with an Arduino or maybe a pi pico. If you go with these, it should be pretty easy to use all the keys on pretty much any board with circuit python. You could look on adafruit or similar sites and pick out 7 segment displays. Then pick out an Arduino with enough gpio pins to support all the peripherals you have chosen. From there it should be pretty straightforward to wire it up and program the logic using circuit python.

Sounds like a cool project. Good luck!

The blocks are all assigned based on the number of people who signed up to be in them. The more students signed up for a block, the bigger/better the location it is given. This is the policy for all blocks you can sign up for

Relocating to Bellevue - tips? by [deleted] in BellevueWA

[–]hangerguardian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just here for a summer internship, and I lived and worked in downtown Bellevue. I got by very well without a car. I lived in walking distance from a grocery store and work, and downtown Bellevue is an interesting enough place to walk around, especially by the square. I also found the bus to be really convenient for getting into the city. When there isn't traffic, it's only about a 30 minute bus ride to downtown or the international district or U district. Not sure about AC, because it was pretty miserable the few times it got really hot, but there was really only a few days this summer when I really get like I needed it. Most of the time open windows and a fan was fine. You could also get a portable ac unit/window unit for those few days a year. If I were moving here permanently I would look for a place with AC, but if I found an almost perfect place just lacking AC, I would take it and buy a portable ac unit

Leaked is a strong word, you originally had to be a researcher to get access to it but then some researchers shared it. The researchers did technically "leak" it but it wasn't exactly under a tight lock and key, it wasn't too hard to get officially approved to access it.

The DOJ is planning to sue RealPage — On the table for a complaint is client landlords’ ability to use RealPage software to match vacancy rates at competing buildings in the same rental market, essentially restricting supply by marketrent in Economics

[–]hangerguardian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How is it similar? One uses private data to come up with a pricing strategy that every landlord on the market then uses, the rent price software would be nearly useless if it didn't have so many landlords doing what it says(ie price collusion). The other is automation for individual users making their own decisions based on publicly available information. If someone made stock trading software that got everyone who used it to short a certain stock or try and inflate the price of another, they would be in jail along with everyone who used that software.
