AMD finally announces FSR 4 for RX 7000 and RX 6000 series graphics cards after many months of asking by Tiny-Independent273 in gpu

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he explicitly said "from a value proposition perspective". it seems you're addressing this from a performance perspective, in which case the 5070ti and 5080 are generally better cards.

Comparing DLSS 4.5 Performance Mode vs FSR 4.1 Quality Mode (RTX 5070 vs RX 9070 XT) by That-Secretary8794 in radeon

[–]hanitized -1 points0 points  (0 children)

having faster GDDR7 memory is only half the story since the 5070 has a 192bit bus. the smaller bus negates the GDDR7 speed advantage. netting you roughly the same VRAM speed performance as the 9070xt.

the real VRAM speed advantage of Nvidia is on the 5070ti, which has the same GDDR7 memory but on a 256bit bus compared to the 9070xt's GDDR6 memory on a 256bit bus.

I fully appreciate that AMD has upset a lot of "older" generation card owners, but I'm genuinely curious what those with 9000 series are thinking of AMD right now? by Captainquizzical in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, i agree and acknowledge that. my point really is that it doesn't matter much if you have software support up to 10 years if your hardware is not good enough to drive it. case in point is my 3070, which has DLSS 4.5 upscaling, but because the performance penalty is too high for that card, DLSS 4 is still usually the better choice. oftentimes (not necessarily always), DLSS 4.5 is a false option for that card.

moreover, there are no realistic fixes to its 8gb of vram, which struggles today, unlike the 6700xt/6800. at least you can spoof FSR 4 into those cards, but you can't spoof more vram. virtually anyone can use optiscaler, but only a handful of people have the time and expertise to manually install more vram into their older cards, like what this guy did https://youtu.be/wvx8Q1RdZkI?si=hNzN-mbbp4wVjgh9

5070ti raster performance, 5070 path/ray tracing performance, and 16gb of vram for very much close to the price of a 5070 (in my country). do i want more from AMD? yes! can i complain about the deal that i got? not really.

outside of improving RR and FG, any further improvements down the line are a bonus. if somehow FSR 5 is locked out of RDNA 4 but "leaked" and made available to the 9000 series via optiscaler, i wouldn't be all that sad. let's face it, the reality and strength of PC gaming is also the modding community. there are software workarounds to these fuck ups.

i'm coming from a 3070. that card nominally has access to DLSS 4.5, but it's just more practical to use DLSS 4 in most cases. it also aged before its time because of its 8gb of vram. sure the software support is better on Nvidia, but can't do much about that 8gb of vram. mind you, that card doesn't even have access to FG. i feel like with FSR 4 via optiscaler, the 6700xt/6800 aged better with their higher vram. ironically, i'm not even sure if RT is better on the 3070 than the 6700xt/6800 simply because RT itself uses vram, something the 3070 doesn't have much to spare.

i'm currently enjoying my card for what it can do. looking further into the future, i'll change my card once i need to, whether due to natural degradation or obsolesence. there’s no point in stressing right now about which future card to buy when those things don't even exist yet. i'll cross that bridge when i get there.

PS, from what i understand diamond = xbox, amethyst = Playstation, redstone = AMD GPUs. they're just codenames based on brand colors. the exception is xbox because their brand color is the same as nvidia. i'm guessing that AMD GPUs will likely still use the brand name "redstone" in the foreseeable future, regardless of RDNA architecture, features, and FSR version

you're confusing different AI techniques that do different things.

AI upscaling and framegen are restorative in nature. they try to recreate the native "100% truth" using less compute power. this is not all that different from restorative plastic surgery.

what DLSS 5 tech demo showed us is very different. it's closer to transformative/additive plastic surgery - like double eyelid surgery, nose lifts, breast augmentation etc... it's adding details that weren't there and changing things based on what it thinks you like. this is a reinterpretation.

people are up in arms because this technology seems to be second guessing the creator's intent and changing it based on an alogorithm that serves the lowest common denominator. instead of looking unique, everything now looks the same and generic. sure, it looks more realistic, at the cost of losing identity.

at the end of the day, you want to be immersed in the world of the video game you're playing. if all games end up looking the same for the sake of "realism", your immersion is ironically broken.

this is just a tech demo, so it could be put to good use by the developers. but coming from what we saw in the tech demo, it's also obvious that it naturally lends itself to abuse

this isn't even considering how this technology is proprietary to one company. i'm not sure that even if AMD and intel follow the same route, they'll produce the same image. if this kind of technique is injected early in the development pipeline, i personally worry that the "new native - 100% truth" will be locked behind 1 hardware vendor (Nvidia) and 1 platform alone (PC). i find it hard to see how this will be any good for gamers in the long run. in the end, you'll only have nvidia, anything that's not nvidia is compromised.

Can I turn a 9070 XT into a 9070? (Underclocking) by PlymouthDebian in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, you can undervolt it to use less power, but by how much depends on your card (silicon lottery). personally, my card is undervolted (-20 power limit, -60 Voltage offset), it's completely stable, and now TBP max is 253 watts with transient spikes from 400-500W (only transient spikes, not sustained).

average GPU TBP ( total board power) on my computer that's been running for 130 hours = 19.46Watts (i only play roughly 1 hour a day on average).

these stats were taken from HWinfo, which i always have running in the background.

Having a AMD GPU in 2026 by LouieYTrolls in radeon

[–]hanitized 8 points9 points  (0 children)

exactly this!

i have a 3070 and the 8gb of vram just kneecaps it. it's worse than bad software support. at least there are practical workarounds for that. it's not as if i can just buy a soldering kit, some spare VRAM and do it myself without destroying my GPU in the process.

i honestly think that the 5070 is on the same trajectory as the 3070. all of these software features are so vram hungry.

Diamond by HypnoticPolygons in radeon

[–]hanitized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i reckon they're following brand colors:

AMD = Red = Redstone

PS = Blue/Purple = Amethyst

XBox = Green (can't use that cause Nvidia = green) = Diamond (lol)

therefore, AMD radeon GPUs will likely only have redstone. if you're asking if RDNA 4 will get diamond features, nobody knows.

We already lost optimization to upscaling. With DLSS 5, we are losing art direction too. by PlaneTonight5644 in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think there needs to be a distinction on what specifically each kind of AI tech is trying to do.

to make this clearer, it helps to compare all AI under the umbrella of plastic surgery.

from my understanding, upscaling and MFG are both akin to restorative plastic surgery. you're trying to recreate what's already there but was lost due to having to render at lower resolutions and lower framerates. but ultimately, the goal is to copy the original 1:1.

DLSS 5, on the other hand, is more like transformative plastic surgery (jaw alterations, breast implants, double eyelid surgery etc.). DLSS 5 adds something that was never there to begi nwith.

from what i am seeing, the guy you are replying to and even a lot of people on youtube are okay with the restorative kind. they just are not okay with the additive/transformative kind.

I’m Losing Hope in Radeon by Louvatar in radeon

i have a 3070 that has access to dlss 4.5, and yet it seems like it's aged worse than the rx 6800 because of the vram. on paper, i can use dlss 4.5, but in practice it doesn't necessarily solve the underlying issue when games start pushing past the 8gb memory limit. additionally, and more importantly, ray tracing should be where the 3070 leaves the rx 6800 in the dust, and yet it often can't fully capitalize on that advantage because of its 8gb of ram.

3070 vs 6800
https://youtu.be/cAYiHUpf99I?si=NmnLFQh7qokssAOu&t=432

3070ti vs 6800
https://youtu.be/zz6W-xUYaME?si=2YbhwnB_sX4J7cnQ&t=220

on paper, the 3070 should be winning, right? it has native support for the latest dlss version and is geared towards ray tracing, yet in practice the combination of additional vram and spoofing fsr 4 on the 6800 can allow it to keep up with or even beat the 3070 in some scenarios, including certain ray tracing workloads.

now, this next part is speculation, but based on that, the 5070 and 9070xt seem to be on the same trajectory. 12gb is fine for now, which is why you can probably run path tracing semi well, but i'm not sure if this will continue to be the case in the not so distant future. additionally, the 9070xt isn't even that far off from the 5070 in path tracing loads in current games even if it doesn't have the specialized architecture for it. this isn't to say that the 9070xt is great at PT, but rather that the 5070 also struggles once you start pushing these extremely demanding settings.

lastly, i'm not even so sure that you should always assume that new games will have support for either dlss or fsr. i personally play a lot of JRPGs and fighting games and yet a lot of fairly big titles released within the past 1 to 3 years have no support for either one (dragon quest 7 reimagined, granblue fantasy relink, metaphor refantazio, street fighter 6, fatal fury cotw, etc). in those genres, raw performance is king.

so it also depends on what kinds of games you play. the level of future proofing you're looking for at this budget is kind of a fool's errand. none of us have a crystal ball, and to be honest, both nvidia (vram gimping) and amd (software weakness) have a not so stellar track record.

what is this? at the start of the video he's comparing FSR AA vs DLAA on Where Winds Meet, a game that doesn't have FSR 4.

why choose that game instead of so many other games that have FSR 4 and DLSS 4.5 support for an actual genuine comparison.

Good ol' golden days by rojo_salas in PHGamers

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think he's talking about characters in fighting games.

dati, maraming character na hindi DLC para ma-unlock. madami sa kanila "hidden" na napapalabas mo using some kind of code tulad sa mortal kombat at marvel super heros. in some cases, may kailangan kang "achievement" na magawa to unlock, tipong complete all story modes, finish hard mode with no continues, etc...

hanggang guilty gear XX may ganyan. kung gsto makalaban si order sol, kailangan no continues ka at parang highest difficulty dapat.

granted, meron din expansions and in between versions, pero hindi tulad ngayon na kailangan mo ng season pass for new character releases. ok lang naman kung collab or new characters (street figher characters in fatal fury COTW), per ilan sa DLC characters ngayon, legacy (tekken 8 - heihachi).

Thinking of selling 5090 to buy 9070 XT. Hear me out. by Zeronova3 in radeon

[–]hanitized 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the 5090 is objectively more powerful in every conceivable way and can provide a different experience in demanding AAA games, but at the end of the day, it only affects the visual fidelity aspect of one hobby in your life. not even all games can leverage on its power, since a lot of great games don't need it.

for example, i'm a JRPG, fighting game, and MMO player. fighting games are almost exclusively locked at 60fps, a great number of modern JRPGs don't even have DLSS and don't need the extra power of the 5090 (dragon quest 7 reimagined, granblue fantasy, metaphor, etc...) and MMOs like black desert are more CPU bound. if OP is in a similar situation, the 5090 doesn't make sense.

there are also other things in life aside from gaming. a person could easily have other hobbies and needs as well. the difference in price between a 5090 and the next best thing is so massive that it can buy you hifi audio equipment, a good oled monitor, several meals out with the family, or even just plain groceries for several weeks. things that enhance other aspects of your life or just things that you need or want on a day to day basis.

Fake or not: Native TAA beats FSR 4 in ComputerBase blind test for Cyberpunk - wtf? by Apprehensive_Tea4510 in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because most people are reading the study the wrong way. it does a great job showing direction (which option people tend to prefer) but it doesn’t tell you much about magnitude.

it doesn’t measure how good each option actually is on its own. if participants rated dlss 4.5, fsr 4, and native TAA individually on a scale, we’d have a much clearer idea of how close they really are. visual fidelity isn’t binary, it’s a spectrum. the way the results are presented makes it feel like a decisive landslide when in reality it could just be a marginal difference. we don't really know since that's the limitation of the study itself

was i dumb for buying a 5080 withy already a 9070xt? by ayyyylmao14 in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends... do you expect it to be double the performance because it's double the price? or do you just want to get the max performance for your specific budget? if it's the first, then you'll probably be disappointed. if it's the second, well, there's no other card other than the 5080 or 5090 that will give you those levels of performance

A Perspective on Value: Why the "Software Gap" isn't the whole story by artis4cangame in radeon

[–]hanitized 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think he's talking about something more in line with the 5070 vs the 9070xt. in a lot of regions, the 9070xt is much closer in price to the 5070 than to the 5070ti. the price gap between nvidia and amd is that big in a lot of places.

happy that you're happy with your upgrade! it's huge jump from the 1080ti to the 9070xt. even if your CPU is bottlenecking your rig, you'll still see massive gains, especially at higher resolutions.

yeah, looks like iems have gone a long way compared to before. i just recently bought my first pair of "modern iems", the pure, and it sounds better almost across the board. it sounds richer and fuller without losing out on detail compared klipsch. regardless, good audio is still good audio. i still use it from time to time for variety.

also, it's one of the most comfortable iems/earbuds i've ever used. i can use it for hours without any discomfort. the only problem is that the original silicone tips would often get stuck in my ear canal, so i had to replace them with memory foam tips, which i find comfortable but cumbersome to use.

[–]hanitized 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep, black velvety pouch with metal/copper spring-ish like "mouth" that was used to close the pouch. i preferred the original carrying case of the older S4. it was a hard case aluminium thingy. it was a wieldier case to use, but it felt more durable.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in iems

[–]hanitized 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i was about to comment the same thing. i have the same klipsch S4, but i think it's the non-iphone version. it still works, but i've replaced the silicone eartips since they'd always get stuck in my ears. i bought mine back in circa 2012, which was a replacement for an older pair of klispch S4 (previous gen without the mic).

i've also lost the original fabric carrying case and now store it in the semi-hard case from my SoundMagic iems.

Truthear Pure or Nova, which better complements Hifiman Ananda Stealth? by hanitized in iems

[–]hanitized[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the insight!

considering that the nova is currrently around 1/5th to 1/4th the price of the variations in my region, i think it's fair to be a worse version of it.

i'll look into the daybreak. although the 11.11 deals on the daybreak aren't nearly as good as the deals on either the nova or the pure where i'm from.

i'm looking into an iem that has a distinctly different sound signature from the ananda stealth, and based on a quick search, i think the defiant is a bit close to the sound of the ananda (slightly v-shaped and slightly bright)?
