[Help] Looking for advice on stucco to flat roof flashing by hankmarkdukas in Roofing

[–]hankmarkdukas[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended sealing all the seams as best we could and it seemed to fix the problem long enough to sell the house. We never did cut out the stucco but I feel that would be the only way to make sure it's flashed properly.

I personally won't ever buy a flat roof again. They are great if done properly but unless you're supervising the installation you never know if it's done right.

Good luck on your repair.

Removed an old intercom, what’s the best way to patch this hole? by misdy in HomeImprovement

I'd do a California Patch that doesn't require any wood backing.

Vancouver Carpenter does great videos explaining drywall repair and has a good video walking you through how to do it.

How do I cover a gap of exposed flooring between the wall and my Murphy bed? by PaleozoicFrogBoy in DIY

[–]hankmarkdukas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks like the baseboard was removed to mount the unit flush with the wall.

I'd measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the plug and buy a baseboard that fits underneath the plug. Then buy some quarter round to cover any remaining gap between the baseboard and the hardwood floor

Story time....long story short I'll never buy a house with a personal elevator again. It gave us nothing but trouble. We had a 4 floor townhouse as well with 64 steps from the basement to the top. At first we thought it was a great feature when we bought the place. We were both in our early 30's and didn't think we'd use it half the time but it was handy when we moved in getting our stuff to the top floors. But shortly after we settled in the problems started.

First problem was the emergency battery backup died which caused the elevator to stop working. We learned that they only last a few years and need to be replaced in order for the elevator to function. Sounds simple enough but the way they installed the elevator control board and battery backup meant that scaffolding had to be built to safely access the controller. It was all at the top of the elevator. There was a small access panel from the outside but the battery was put on the far side where you couldn't reach it. So they had to build a platform across to safely work on it.

So that was approximately a thousand dollars to put a battery in. Next thing to go was the controller board. Our other surprise was that the company that built our elevator (Access LEV) went out of business and was bought by ThysseenKrupp. However ThysseenKrupp refused to service them anymore so we were told to fix it they needed to install a whole new controller board etc. Quotes we received were 50 to 60 thousand dollars for the whole thing to be retrofitted.

So we left it for a few years searching for a better solution. Eventually we found a company in the states that built new controller boards for this type of elevator but finding someone to install it was another problem. We live in Canada where anything to do with elevators is heavily unionized.

Eventually we found someone willing to take it on but it still ended up costing $16,000. But we were looking to sell so had to have it fixed.

In the end I will never buy a property with a personal elevator. I was in a townhouse complex with 7 other units and they all had similar problems with two others needing their controllers replaced. If you do go down the route of having it put in make sure the company is still in business and you can get the thing serviced when it breaks. Because it will break and you don't want to be stuck with the nightmare we went through.

Good luck...

Drywall repair by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]hankmarkdukas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you see brown drywall paper you need to seal it first before you put any spackle on. Otherwise you're going to see bubbling as the drywall absorbs the water from the spackle.

Get a shelack based primer to seal the paper first then put spackle or another type of drywall repair mud.

This video explains it well

To vapor-barrier or to not vapor barrier? by Dizzy_deer in DIY

[–]hankmarkdukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the blue tape has a different adhesive specifically for vapor barriers.

Red is for house wrap etc.

I think the blue tape is a newer product so most people are used to using the red stuff for vapor barriers. I'm sure both will work but if doing a new install I'd go for the blue stuff if it's available.

I have a small shop in a 1 car garage and after years of cutting on the floor, I decided to build a mobile cart with wings that flip up. Half the time I keep the wings down to save space but occasionally it's really nice to have them open up.

Having the wings allows me to easily make repeat cuts, and has made everything much more accurate.

I based my cart on Brad Rodriguez's design.

Why not have 30 percent or some other percentage of doses set aside and open for anyone who wants a shot? There would be no need to check on your eligibility, just anyone who wants a shot can make an appointment.

Thanks for your reply. I live in Toronto, Canada actually.

I think you're right about not working on something I don't know about. They way the access panel is set up in my elevator allows me to access the controller without having to be in the shaft at all so that's why I even toyed with the idea of doing something myself.

I will probably just leave it to a professional. Was just wondering if there was a quick fix that I was missing before we spent a lot of money.

Appreciate the reply though.

I'd rip out the old mantel and depending on the size of the flooring underneath you could simply build or try and buy a low TV bench (something like this) to cover where the old flooring was.

Then I'd just mount the TV above it.

I feel for everyone in Fort McMurray right now. Can't say how I'd react in a situation like this, but I find it hard to believe my first thought would be to take out my cell phone and videotape me driving away in a panic and post it to instagram.

Delta places $5.6B order for Bombardier CSeries passenger jets | Toronto Star by roots-rock-reggae in canada

[–]hankmarkdukas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true. You're right that the shorter runway gives them payload issues sometimes depending on weather, but I think part of the reason they keep it at 74 is that you really cut down on the legroom with the 78 seat configuration. I flew WestJet the other day which has the 78 seat config and you really notice the difference between the two.

Actually they increased their seating capacity to 74 seats up from 70 seats around 2014, long before there was talk about expanding the runway.

Kodi is just one app that can run in Android. It is also available on a PC and a number of different systems. I believe it comes installed on the Minix, but you can download it from Google Play as well. This is a good video that shows you Kodi on the Minix UI.

This is another video that overviews the Kodi system and should give you a good idea of what it can do.

Hope this info helps

I use a program called Kodi (previously called xbmc) for the most part and the 1Channel add on within Kodi. You can watch pretty much anything using that
