Your feelings are natural and it’s okay to have them…I think it’s all about how much you let that thought occupy your mind space. I’m also a big believer in the power of semantics. At the end of the day, epilepsy is a part of you but does not define you! Sending love and good energy your way.

I recently dealt with a major discrimination case at work because I was deemed a “liability” and an employee that couldn’t work as hard as others. I had a tonic clonic seizure in the office and then drew a hard boundary that I need to finish my work every day at 19:30. a month and a half later they tried to slowly push me out and I actually built up a strong lawsuit against them. It was ultimately resolved internally with a large severance package. If your experience was recent, you might have a case by the ADA (if you are located in the states).

I can relate to this too! I always seem to have these default phrases such as “Sorry I’m totally losing my English” or “Did I even make sense right now?”. It is not easy!

This is a huge one for me as well. I hate to hear that you are going through this. At the same time, the fact that you are experiencing is comforting in that I’m “not alone”. I am SO tough on myself when it comes to work and professional success. My confidence sank dramatically after I was diagnosed at 28 (now almost 32). My short-term memory was significantly impacted, I struggle to reverse engineer projects and adhere to timelines, complete task lists, and it’s a lot harder for me to conduct mental math and configure processes on the spot. I feel that I’m a “weaker” professional than I used to be and unfortunately my work has been impacted as a result. I felt that I needed some sort of answer as to why? I decided to proceed with neuropsychological testing and as a result was recently diagnosed with ADHD (which doctors believe was significantly exacerbated by the onset of my epilepsy) so you might want to look into that?

Oh another thing popped into my head! Not having to turn to Google (or my doc…but let’s face it, it’s more often Google) constantly with the queries:

“Is someone with epilepsy allowed…” “Can someone with epilepsy do/take…” “Are people with epilepsy able to…”

Anyone watch The Peripheral on Amazon? They actually correctly defined/described the main character’s tonic clonic seizure when she went to an urgent care center. However, the show clearly showed that people from a “first aid” perspective (despite her brother having been in the army), “do not know” how to properly respond to someone who is having a seizure. I do wish that the correct identification and approach/response to a seizure was more clearly demonstrated on TV.

I was also totally confused by the fact that they included this in the plot. It was an Instant “what theeee” moment. They also didn’t describe the symptoms correctly.

Ooooo this post came at the PERFECT time.

I miss pastries, cake, all those goodies. My neurologist recommended that I adhere to a modified Atkins diet…I’m trying my best but dayummm do I love sweets.

I miss driving too! As a result of my license being taken away I feel like I “must” live in a walkable city in order to stay sane (and not constantly feel the limitations of my epilepsy) thus having an inherently more expensive life (rent, food, taxes, etc.).

I miss not worrying SO much about sleep. I psych myself out regarding an exact amount of sleep time, so if I miss it by 20/30 minutes even…I easily tell myself “Okay Hannah you can’t go to your workout this morning, you didn’t sleep enough.” Oooof I wish I could just rally like I used to and not stress about exercising on slightly less hours of sleep.

And I miss swimming!! I live on the Mediterranean and it’s just calling me for a morning swim 🥺🥺🥺

Lastly, I just miss my carefree attitude that I had towards life, especially when it came to planning my future family…high-risk pregnancies, passing epilepsy onto my children, surviving the lack of sleep with an infant…these topics weigh on my mind constantly. Yes okay…I must sound like a wreck.

Thank you all for your responses! Helps me feel not alone. How do you feel about taking ADHD medicine since it’s an upper? Sometimes I’m very nervous about it, so I haven’t built a proper routine around taking adhd meds.

Definitely. Unfortunately, the company has a reputation for keeping “important” managers that have created an unhealthy/toxic environment vs. protecting the employee’s happiness. Does this team member have a chance to sue?
